Do you want to know how to trim your Greyhound's nails? Have you ever wondered how to trim your dog's nails without hurting them? How do you trim black nails on a dog? How short should a dog's nails be? How do you know when your dog's nails need clipping? Should you use nail clippers or a dremel? These questions will be addressed in this video, as Olive the Greyhound has a manicure. If you've ever wondered how to use a dog nail dremel, then this video may be for you.

Absolutely inspiring! We have three IGGYs now, and at $75 bucks per trip to the spa, I need to learn some new skills. Life of crazy IGGY people.

Use your cell phone lamp (flashlight) to illuminate behind the nail to easily locate the quick. Gorgeous beach shots.

I just discovered a good trick with the black nails. Got my phone torch and shone it from behind the nail so you can see where the fleshy part is through the nail. Temporarily blinded myself along the way...

Haha, I’ve tried this too and also nearly blinded myself 😎

This was so helpful! My grey has all black nails so I’m always scared to cut them too short. Speaking of... how do you get olives coat so nice and shiny?? I’ve tried all kinds of coat supplements with mine and he still has really dry skin months later!

Lizby Hi there! I feed Olive the raw food by BARF mixed with a top quality grain free kibble called Ivory Coat. I also put some olive oil in her dinner a few times a week and give her tinned sardines regularly. I don’t wash her very often, maybe every few months. Maybe I’ll do a video on food...

Great Vid! Thank you! Any advice on dealing with a doggie that might be frightened of the Dremel sound and feel?

Meech Meech I would probably just start off by turning the dremel on near the dog, giving treats or rewards the whole time, and slowly build up to being able to touch the dog’s nails with the dremel. Then maybe just apply the dremel to one nail a couple of times with rewards until you can actually file it properly. Then build up to filing a couple of nails per session and so on until you can do more. I often just do Olive’s front legs in one session and then her back legs in another. Apparently using a firmer pressure with the dremel is less tickly for the dog also. Good luck!

sorry Nat, I still quite cant get the idea for black nail. How to tell as to when i should stop?
@NataliePowellAGreytLife

Nancy Yu I think the key is to go very gradually, just a little at a time. Just keep checking the underneath of the claw as you go and once it starts to reveal a more pulpy appearance, stop. Be careful not to hold the file on there for too long as it can get quite hot.

Debbie Johnston just like filing your own nails but with a tiny sanding machine. I just do a few nails at a time in short bursts, and she’s fine with that. Letting their nails grow long can cause other problems.

i tried using very bright cree led light to see through black nails but still cant see where to trim to so have to do little by little once a week and theres no way i could use my dremmel, getting her to not pull using normal clippers is bad enough, the noise of that thing would cause more grief! have to have someone stroking her as i do nails so she don't know whats going on! its hard work.

You may have noticed by now, but the bit on the nail file is not tight enough. As you could see the sanding band was able to move up and down. 🙂

Brandy Jackson I think it is just the little tube of sanding paper which moves a bit because I’m not using the cover which normally goes on top. The actual rotating part is firmly in place. But thanks for noticing! 😊

Natalie Powell I own a Dremel 7300, when the sanding bit isn’t firmly in place it becomes quite the safety hazard lol. I would definitely check your instructions for the one you have.

You need to put the sand paper on the rubber section. Then on the end of the drill bit, you can see a little screw, tighten that a couple of turns. It expands the rubber so it grips the sand paper tube to stop it moving up and down. To remove an old tube, just loosen the screw 👍

My greyhound is ok with clippers. My whippet HATES them. I think the noise of a dremel would make him worse!
