For reference, when you tune with Lambda your target vs reading can be expressed as error in percentage. Say your target is 1.0 (14.7:1) and your wideband says .80 you just add 20% to that point on the table and you will get very very close to your target.

Because the wideband reads an average of all 8 cylinders in a downpipe, and the Holley closed loop fueling will adjust the final afr to your target (let's say 11.5 afr for example)....what happens when you make 1 or 2 cylinders 5% richer with Holley's individual cylinder fueling? Wouldn't that make the average afr detected by the wb o2, richer than 11.5 afr, and then force the fuel correction to take out fuel to reach your 11.5 afr target? Or does it automatically make your global afr target value richer if you make individual cylinders richer?

I think your aif/fuel explanation is spot on. There are to many variables where you can end up with 1 or 2 lean cylinders and then pop goes the weasel, besides timing makes way more diffrence in power gain or loss compared to a/f ratio. So keep it closer to the fat side where you can keep a little more timing in it to make your power. Then if you really feel good about your tune and motor and chasing every last bit of power you can lean on it and push your luck! Just my two cents

You say that you can tell a problem just looking at a VE graph. I put a holley base turbo tune and the holley adjusted it self and had peaks of like 103 at 2500 to 3000 at -10.3 (i have axis in PSI) reving it in park.then in less vacuum it dives down to i guess normal but its much lower VE

I totally agree with your comment.. make the car happy at idle. any performance cam overlap at idle can't clear a cylinder with such low velocity, so any fuel added is mixed with remaining exhaust in the chamber from the overlap of the valves.. the value the sensor sees is basically irrelevant.

good explanation. I like how you explained that you should give the engine what it likes AFR wise. I'm putting together a fairly basic setup. Stock intake manifold and ported stock heads. I have access to the factory calibration and they have individual cylinder offsets in there. Is it worth transferring that data to the Holley? Small block Chevy V8. Not an LS. So I'm assuming the factory was well aware of a distribution issue and accounted for it.

Finally, I would love to see more information on starting a Fuel Table for VE% other than selecting one of the Holley preset tables. How is VE calculated from base engine specifications? Thanks again.
@JoeSimpsonAtTempest3 жыл бұрын
Those were just arbitrary numbers to show if your in VE based, the table values won’t change when you change the target afr. But if you are in speed density mode, the table values will need to change
@AlexM-tx2vr2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this great video series. I have learned a lot, but the videos have also generated a lot of questions. Several times in the video, you say something to the effect of you just need to "play with" it. It would be very helpful to understand the input and outputs I need to "play with." In this case one of the inputs is the "target AFR", but are there other parameters you adjust during this process? Moving to the outputs, what parameters are you looking at? Clearly the O2 sensor reading is one, but as you pointed out in the video you can't fully trust the O2 sensor. So, is this process something I can do without a dyno or is the dyno the primary output tool to understand what AFR my engine likes best?

I will add, if you don't want to answer it here, it would be a good topic for a video.
