I do mine a little different. I drill the hole in the insert then put it on a blind mandrel and shape the insert. Never have had one off center yet !!! Nice job though Phil !! All your stuff looks cool. Cant wait to get the red white and blue acrylic from you !!! Should be some nice looking stuff !!

Nice job, did you drill it out after you turned it?

@david yes I do use o-rings @DJ you can make toneboards with out a jig but it takes a lot of practice. You will have a hard time keeping them consistently the same. With a jig it allows you to make a consistent board. If you use pre-made inserts your calls are not truly custom made. Even with a jig it will still take a lot of practice to find your sound and perfect it.

@ Aaron Hintz once you have the insert turned chuck it up in a 5/8" collet chuck and then drill with your tail stock.

few questions for you, first off. do you use a jig for your inserts? is there a way to make them without one? ( not sacrificing quality or sound ). reason is, that i want to start a small business and i am wondering if its OK to sell " homemade custom calls" with purchased inserts. or does a " homemade call" have to have a hand turned inserts? i already have an anctious bunch waiting for some and i dont want to dissapoint.

What length do you use for the insert

Quinten Allen the part that goes inside the call should be sligthly shorter then the barrel i think. The easiest way to know is to buy a cheap duck call and take it apart, it can help you get a general idea of how things are put togheter
