Pin 3 is TFL Tages Fahr Licht which is German for DRL Daytime Running Lights this one needs to be removed. Pin 6 is 56B this wire goes to the rear licenseplate lights and needs to be removed too. With VCDS you need to goto: [09] Centr. Electric. One more thing, now you know what TFL stands for. ;-) The option you are revering to is called DFL by VW. DFL stands for Dauer Fahr Licht which means CDL Continuous Driving Lights or CRL Continuous Running Lights. Pin 3 TFL on the light switch can be used to connect real DRL Daytime running Lights.

Just so you guys know! When Low Beam is active on 0 and not active when you turn the knob to actual low beam position, the relay is bad. (It got stuck) Knock it a little it bit and it should work for a while, but better to replace it. It is the first one (starting from the door) out of the two small ones. It has 449 (4a from the drawing) written on it.

Hi, the 2012 polo we have now was also a difficult one to do. I had to get my head underneath so that I could see what I was doing, but by using an iron bar I had handy (small crowbar sort of thing) I was able to put some pressure on the rear of the switch to give it that extra shove it needed. I managed it alone but it would have been a little easier with somebody else turning and pulling on the switch. The pegs on it were not as free movement as they should have been but the extra shove did the trick. I have also turned off the sidelights on this later one, but did need to get hold of the VCDS software and cable to do so.

Hay how are you, I have an 09 mk5 jetta. Wolfsburg Edition. I retrofitted an OEM factory fog light, which works perfectly, but my issue is that, at the first turn of the light switch, the low beam turns on. Second turn and the low beam goes off, but the parking lights stays on. At the third turn is where I pull, for the fog lights. My question is how can I swap the second and first turning of the switch. When I turn to the first position, I only want the parking lights, second position then the DRL turns on.

Hi, unfortunately I don't understand very much about how any of the wiring works in these cars, I was able to gain the info I used to make this clip from photos and info I found on the internet. I have since been able to switch off the side and number plate lights too, but for that I did have to get hold of a a VAGCOM cable and software. I have no idea how you would be able to get around your problem other than new labels on your light switch to swap the positions, as I think the switches themselves must have a small circuit inside them, meaning simply swapping 2 wires would not solve this. If anyone knows iif the wires can be swapped please get in touch. thanks

Having the option to put the wire back is always good. An OBD II (two/2/ii) reader will only read Fault Codes and stuff, whereas these VW's need the dealer stuff like VAGCOM to mess with settings. I did go to a VW specialist at the time to ask if they could turn them off, but they wanted £40 for what would take no more than 2 minutes to do! With VAGCOM you go to Central Electric, then, Coding, Then, Long Code Helper, then, Byte 12, then Disable Bit 0 'Parking Lights ON with Terminal 15 ON' and this turns the front and rear side lights off. I have never had or used VAGCOM, but a few weeks ago saw Carista App mention. We might buy one for my brother's latest Polo but only after we know he definately has a job to go back to after furlough! Thanks.

TFL or Tagfahrlicht means Daytime Running Light. As explained in the German language version of Wikipedia: "Das Tagfahrlicht (englisch: Daytime Running Light), auch Licht am Tag genannt, ist eine Fahrzeugbeleuchtung, die die Sichtbarkeit des Fahrzeugs am Tage für andere Verkehrsteilnehmer verbessern und so Unfälle durch Übersehen werden verringern soll.[1]" Translated: The Daytime Running Lights, also called Day Lights, are a vehicle lighting feature that enhances the visibility of a vehicle for other drivers and thereby should decrease accidents caused by poor visibility.

Hi I am still new to these modern cars, and am not familiar with any differences. It seems some vw's have a fuse you can remove!? or on some cars, if you push the turn signal lever down and back, then switch the ignition on and off whilst holding the lever they will turn off that way. (although it is always worth trying down and forward, up and back, up and forward as well in case it differs). on cars like this polo where it uses headlights I would just tape off 1 pin at a time until I can find the right one, but obviously this may be more difficult or impossible to do with small thin pins, in which case I would need to get a wiring diagram to someone who knows how to read it , or get them to trace the electric for me as both these methods are beyond me. need a video / google help!

Thanks a lot for your video - I would like to do the same to my Polo 6R 2010 so when switch is off ("0") then headlights are off and only sidelight and rear lights are on. Do you may know how to do this though VCDS?
@ifitsgotwheels3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have only just got VCDS in 2021 (after Turbo Actuator problems on our replacement Polo!), and intend to make some more Polo clips soon. Unfortunately the Headlights and Sidelights can not be turned off in VCDS. The Headlights have to be cut at the TFL wire as shown. (This wire still carries power so can be used to install LED DRLs). The rear number plate lights, for these you need to cut the 6th wire, (The 'B' wire). Both the Headlights and Rear Number Plate Lights will then only work when the lights are switched to their on positions. This would leave you with just the side lights in the '0' position like you require. I understand you may not like cutting the wires, some bend the prongs! others tape over the prongs, the wires themselves are difficult to unclip without any special tool. I have just sabotaged them to remove them on our newer (2012) model, but there is talk of a removal tool for them which would be better obviously! All exposed wires/ends should be insulated though as the wires still carry power afterwards. Although you are not looking to switch off the Front & Rear Sidelights these can be done through VCDS though as you may well already know. For this go to (09) Central Electric, (07) Coding, Long Coding Helper, Byte 12, and DISABLE Bit 0, "Parking Lights ON with Terminal 15 ON". This simple process turns the 5w side lights on the front and rear OFF for '0' on the switch. If only the Headlights and number plate lights were this easy, too. We have just turned them all off on our 2012 R-Line model. Now we have VCDS we have also added Needle Sweep, Auto-Door Locking once car is driving, Auto Unlocking on Key Removal, there are also other many great features that can be switched on too, like single button unlocking, flashing brake light on sudden/emergency braking, coming home headlight delay (not sure this may just be for later zenon lights), I believe you can also change the steering weighting (i.e. heavier steering) and traction control settings (this one may just be GTI only), but VCDS sure does seem like fun! I hope to make more clips soon, but car is my brothers, and with Covid and Lockdowns, Icy weather, and noisy builders around, they just have to wait a little longer, thanks.
@zachos1383 жыл бұрын
@@ifitsgotwheels Wow! Many thanks for your detailed reply mate! It is indeed really helpful! Unfortunately I have understood that Polo 6r does not allow much tweaking through VCDS. I would go with the isolation of TFL prong with electical tape - I'd rather not to bend or cut wires at this stage, hope this will do the job. Looking forward to your future Polo videos! Stay safe and strong!

There you go. DRL's are off. To turn back on, do the same thing, but go up on the turn signal lever instead, still pulling for the high beams."

Simply because unlike all the other cars we have the Daytime lights on the Polo just look like you have your headlights on, most of the other cars we have have LED Daytime Lights, which look tons better. General Motors has petitioned the government on two separate occasions to mandate Forced Lighting (aka DRLs) in the US. In both instances, the government turned General Motors down citing NO safety evidence. Moreover, notice that most law enforcement vehicles have their Daytime Running Lights disconnected. Far from being considered primarily as a 'safety feature', manufacturers and the motoring press are treating DRLs as a 'stylish addition' to a car, concentrating on the look of DRLs as adding character to a car rather than contributing to its safety. A British study said that statistics about DRLs from eight European countries over a 15-year period show that road fatality rates dropped faster in non-DRL countries such as Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands than fatalities in pro-DRL countries such as Finland, Norway and Sweden. Indeed, Austria has repealed their DRL law on the basis that the numbers of accidents with motorcycles went UP markedly after the DRL law was implemented there. If waiting for someone outside at night I may not want my lights on. I also like to go to drive-in movies, people react badly when you're shining lights in their eyes. Toyota gives their drivers a choice. Sadly, VW does not. Toyota has chosen the proper approach. ALL 2014 and later Toyota's has "DRL OFF" on the light switch. If you want to drive with lights on during the daytime, you can, if you don't want to, you can turn them off. Makes everyone happy. These are true, Daytime Running Lights. What VW now has, and some others have, is actually called, Forced Lighting. With Forced Lighting, the driver has NO control, and is at the total mercy of the kid programmers.

Why would you want them off
@ifitsgotwheels4 жыл бұрын
Because they just look like you are driving around with your headlights on, and we got fed up of people pointing at lights and saying "you know you've got your headlights on, don't you?". My Vauxhall Astra has much better lights as that was made with Daytime Running Lights, where as these Polos lights were simply a hack job by VW bean counters in 2011 to comply with the EU law that was coming into place at the time for 2012. Customers did not like them then Polo moved Daytime light to fog light area, again disliked by customer s as then people thought the drivers were driving about with their fog lights on this time!

Great feature. My Vauxhall Astra has something similar, unfortunately this Polo needs VAGCOM to do that. I wish they had made it that easy on these cars too.

As a driver, cyclist and motorcyclist I believe that the more vunerable road users (cyclists and motorcyclists) should be the ones with lights on during the day. Adding cars into the mix doesn't make driver's notice cyclists and motorcyclists the way that they used too. Only ever needed lights in dull and dark weather, wet, snow & foggy etc., when driving, but out on the bikes I do believe in the old see and be seen philosophy. By the way, I have never had any accidents or claims or points etc. I have also been awarded Gold in the Advanced driving test. Thanks for comment.

Wtf hahaha just take off the bulbs instead of cutting the shyte of the poor car
@ifitsgotwheels4 жыл бұрын
You need to keep the bulbs though so that they will still come on when switched on normally. An otherwise great idea, thanks.
