NOTE: Pinyin tone marks are not supported on all fonts, and if the font you are using doesn't support tone marks, the tone marked vowel will be substituted with a different font. There is a reason I like to use Chalkboard SE font on this channel - it fully supports tone marks. ALSO, on iOS you can just press "enter" key to input pinyin(with no tones) instead of characters. I didn't know this before; thank you 俊鑫 for pointing this out!

Learning Mandarin was very hard, I started about eight months ago due to my love of wuxia stories, I forced myself to watch tv series without any subtitles, and I could somewhat understand some of them, especially the easier ones, after several months, but when I wanted to get more proficient in the language, I met barriers upon barriers that made me want to give up learning it. Hi, thanks for these tips! 😃👍 Btw, perhaps someone already mentioned it, but for Android Gboard you don't need to switch back from Chinese to English for consonants, just type the consonant then the [enter] key. Example: for 你 press [n] then [enter], next long press [ i ] and select the tone mark [ ǐ ]. You get the pinyin text "nǐ" instead of the character. To input two or more consonants together just type them before pressing [enter]. Example: for 中 type [z] [h] then press [enter], long press [ o ] and select the tone mark [ ō ], next type [n] [g] and press [enter], you now have the pinyin text "zhōng". Hope it helps! ☺️

I can't hold my letters to get the tones with the Chinese keyboard, as shown in the video. To write pinyin, I write with my English keyboard and I copy ǎ ǐ ǒ from my clipboard everytime I need them since there I no configuration to get these symbols. (I installed all sorts of fonts). Does anyone know a way to write pinyin with the Chinese keyboard, instead of Hanzi? (On android)

You don’t have to change keyboard on iOS at least, just write de and then tap the 确认 （quèrèn）and you’re good to go

actually, windows does have a way for typing pinyin without third party installations, its called alt keys and macbook has these tho, press alt a certain code of numbers, for example à is ALT+133

You don't need to switch back to English keyboard on Gboard for consonants, you just long press and slide to the relevant character (uppercase/lowercase/symbol).

You don't need to install any software - you can create your own keyboard short cuts in Word! In Word, on the menu ribbon, go to Insert>Symbol, select More Symbols, find the symbol you want, e.g. ā, then click on the button that says Shortcut Key... In the box that says "Press new shortcut key:" create the short cut you want. In my case I created the short cut Alt+a,1 (by pressing Alt, a and 1 on the keyboard) for the symbol ā, then click on the button that says Assign. Then create other shortcuts, e.g. Alt+a,2 for á., Alt+a,3 for ǎ, Alt+a,4 for à, repeating the same for the other finals... Its a bit time consuming to set up, but once done, it will always work - no need for apps or changing language etc.

4:48 on iOS you can simply press return (on the bottom right) to cancel the automation for a neutral tone syllable, instead of switching keyboard. :)

But this trick won't let the Chinese language keyboard offer up the characters from the pinyin. My problem is that I type oin pinyin (without tone marks) and the native Chinese keyboard (Windows 10) won't find many of the words. It won't find phrases; it won't find most stoke names (heng zhe, etc), not even some short ones like Na or Ti. And not all words are found, no matter hjow many times I try starting the search over (which often brings me a new seelction).

I kind of have similar problem. Being able to search for specific chinese characters (while typing with a pinyin keyboard) using pinyin tones would make things a lot easier sometimes. Is that possible somehow? I mean okay, it often doesn't take that much time to find the right characters but sometimes it can be really annoying, especially when searching for more specific stuff.

Not sure how to type third-tone marks with my Linux setup (basically, Spanish keyboard layout, OpenSuse + KDE Plasma DE, using InputMethod+Fctix, SunPinyin for characters, all that works great). I type macrons, graves, and acutes (which I think are all correct? at least they look the same) for the first, second and fourth tones: mā, má, mà. Since I can't find a third tone mark, I use a breve: mă. It's not the right one, but looks close enough :/

I use the Compose Key method for entering tone marks (or diacritics in general). Alt+c (caron) and then the vowel adds the third tone mark. So Alt+c, a gives me ǎ.

Depends on what version of windows it’s running, follow the steps for windows if it’s windows 10 or 11. If it’s still windows 8, you might be able to add the pinyin tones keyboard natively

I type simplified using the Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input Style - the struggle for me is that I would need to specify the tone to get faster to the character I want but this is not possible. For example if I typed (na) I would get a whole list including:那，哪，拿 and much more. Quite often I'd need to search in that small menu for the character that I want. I Googled many times for solutions for specifying the tone to reach the character I want faster, but couldn't find something useful, and seems it's impossible at the moment (I use Win7)
