I was dating a woman a few years back and the house she was renting with a friend, and they both had a very lazy landlord. Anyway the roommate's sink handle broke off because of shotty workmanship, and this ended up flooding the upstairs bathroom and the downstairs master bathroom. For 10 minutes she panicked and did nothing, and the other roommate just didn't even bother to help. I'm not even that handy, yet I knew to walk in and turned off the water to the sink. Imagine how much damage could have been prevented if people thought about this... And the entire house smelled like mold after that. Landlord didn't do anything, it was all to the tenants to take care of.

@@MrAlexSan00 I've had a pipe bust in my laundry room and instantly turned off the water. That definitely saved me from expensive damage, just had to throw the clothes into the garage for a bit, soak up as much water as I could then put a fan in so I was thankful I was home when it happened . I just never thought of it when having a toilet clog. I hope she found a new place to rent soon after that. It stinks when landlords are like that taking no responsibility for their property just collecting rent. 😕

@@MrAlexSan00 My son shared a house with two other young men and he told me about how this one roommate, we’ll call him Jack, stood staring at the toilet while the water overflowed onto the floor! My son said something rude, told him to get out of the way, and reached down and turned the water off. Jack said “I didn’t know what that was for until now.” I tried to teach my son basic renters’ skills when he was a teenager to prepare him for being on his own, including how to put out a fire on the stovetop and how to do laundry in a shared laundry room.

Thanks. I had no idea that those existed especially for toilets. A thing my dad taught me was to (if the toilet is not overflowing with water) dump a bucket of water into the toilet really fast. The power of the water will flush it down and unclogg the toilet most of the time. But again, do not try this when your toilet is filled with water, wait a few minutes and see if some of the water goes down first before trying.
