How to upgrade a CPU and update BIOS

You just saved my life, replaced my Ryzen 5 with my Ryzen 7 and my pc would not boot up all the way. Never realized I needed to update bios before hand. You just saved me some more thermal paste due to how many times I kept taking my cpu out and back in🤣

@@sleepingmoon6649 once I realized I had to update bios before installing the new one, I reinstalled my old cpu, then entered my BIOS settings, then installed my new cpu again, sorry for the long waited response I honestly didn’t see any reply to this comment until now

when u tried to boot did it ask u to sign in then u would click it and nothing would happen and u couldn’t put in ur password

@@zakaridobrzynski9477 you can look at the specs for your motherboard. It should work. but on the manufacture website look at what bios you need to run it so you can upgrade it before you swap.

Yeah followed all steps updated my bios right motherboard update and all went to bios saw that the new cpu was in when I went to save and exit it would show blue face or just freeze in the loading screen what do I do?

I can’t get into BIOS. I can get it into UEFI and click on BIOS from there, but then it just goes to a black screen and never actually boots to BIOS.

No it won’t. It just makes it compatible with newer ones. It won’t drop the older CPUs. But it won’t accept CPUs not meant for that socket. So make sure it’s the same socket type

@@jtravaglini how do i know its the same socket. i have a 8300 sff that came with a i5-3470 and i had bought a i7-2600, and when i had put it in i didnt update anything just replaced it and my fps was dropped alot. is this because i didnt update my bios? or is it casue its not the same socket?

@@exe__anthony4748 i7 is a lga1155 socket and the i5 3470 is a fclga1155 socket. If it’s posted though and working I’d assume it relates to the cpu performance and optimization

Gotta question.just upgraded from Ryzen 5 5600 to Ryzen 7 5700x3D a couple days ago everything went well I can still play games my bios recognized the new processor am I able to update my bios drivers I sold my old cpu just today😅.

Most likely you need a bios update. It doesn’t know how to recognize the Cpu.

Some boards with the Ethernet plugged in you can go in the bios and update it. Some you need to download it prior to it

It should stay. Your windows may deactivate. I’ve also ran in to issues where I needed to reformat. But that’s not to common. It’s always a good idea to back everything up just in case.

not all bios look the same and not all brands use the same key to get in to it. you may need to check your owners manual or google search your board

No you shouldn’t have to as long as you didn’t buy a used older motherboard. If it’s all new it should be compatible

You may need to either clear the cmos or reinstall the old cpu to update the bios.

@@kentwyngaard8803 I’d pull the cpu and check the pins. And try the old cpu again. See if it boots. If it does and the new one doesn’t it’s possible the cpu is bad

You can't change cpu. It will never boot afterward.
