Replacement with heavy duty doorbell transformer for Ring & Nest doorbell that requires only 16v, 30va. Wire colors explained.
The standard household voltage is 120v. A doorbell only uses 10v to 24v. The transformer drops the voltage, so the 120v household circuit is reduced to 10v to 24v for powering the chime unit and bell button. The Ring and Nest need 16v.
There are two screws for connecting two low-voltage wires for the doorbell system. Because they’re low voltage, they can’t give a bad electric shock.
Turn off the breaker to the transformer before you get started. The transformer voltage is 24v. The Ring and Nest need 16v and 30va (volt amps, like watts). This one is 24v and 48va - more power.
1. If you are not getting a power signal from the Ring transformer, it may be the doorbell transformer is burnt out, or is under-powered.
2. If the wifi network is slower, check-out the speed and how many connected devices you have. Upgrade the wifi router for multiple simultaneous devices to cure the slow Ring’s response time. And a low-powered transformer causes intermittent performance.
3. For the Ring with a rechargeable battery, the new transformer will constantly charge the battery. Battery wear is from poor wifi signal, audio and video, or motion detection.
4. If there are long wiring runs over 70 feet, you should get the 24v transformer, not the 16v unit.
Wiring: Connect black wire from transformer to your black wire household electric current (hot); white wire from transformer to white household (neutral); and green (or stripped copper) wire to a ground (like the metal wire box).
When the power is off, remove the transformer. Remember which lines are going where - power, ground, neutral, the front door, the back door, the chime. Strip the wire casings and get a good, clean connection.
On the other side of the transformer will be for the energy outlet. There are two, maybe three screws. One is for the push buttons, next will be for the chime, and if there's a third, it’s for speakers or something. Connect all of the push button wires to the same screw. There’s only one chime. And the third, if so, should all be connected together if they are the same.
After the wires are attached, mount the new transformer in the same location.

I used a 16v 30VA Transformer for my Arlo doorbell cam. And works great. Unfortunately I had a dilemma with Arlo using their voltage regulator that came with the doorbell kit. That thing kept blowing the transformers, I went through 4 of them. Even ran new wiring, still kept blowing. So, I tried without it, and it was working fine. The setup instructions said to install that voltage regulator, well in my case, that's a hell no!!

Excellent, excellent description & walk-through! Thank you for the suggestion on the transformer with "taps" -- I was going to get one via your website but it's sold-out. I would also keep the output at 16VAC as our chimes are spec'd at 16V.

Is it possible to piggyback from a wall outlet/receptacle by using pigtails? I have a similar light to the one you're using here to demonstrate, but ours have the wall on/off switch, so I don't think the same application is going to work for us. However, we do have a 15amp receptacle, breaker at the main panel, that's near where we want the doorbell camera installed. Thank you for all you do.

When hardwiring a “ring” doorbell the low voltage from the transformer is only for trickle charging the battery. It does not use the low voltage power to operate the units functions.

My transfer is also connected into the light just as in the video. Just as the in the video, I have two black wires connected to the transformer. I'm not sure where those two black wires would connect to? If it the 16va wires that are labeled as such on the transformer and does it matter which black wire go to what? I understand the wiring from the doorbell on the outside of the transformer, just not inside the guts where I have just the two black wires.

Hi, I've seen some youtube videos require a resister to be in series with the circuit if not using a physical chime box. Seems like the resister is to absorb the power surge. Does Ring require this or have they figured out how to simply use 24VAC at 40VA? I bought another brand and it cooked without a resister, so I'm not wanting to blow up a ring product... if at all possible.

I found my old transformer was only 8 volts, so I upgraded to a 24v 40 watt transformer (wall wart style). I still can't get my mechanical doorbell chime to ring. The chime for the back door still works fine, but not the front door. The Nest doorbell works otherwise. My front door is about 15' away from the doorbell chime unit, so maybe it's not getting the signal? There is nothing physically blocking the chime from operating either. I even bought a 16v transformer, but that didn't help. I have read that some chimes just aren't compatible. Mine is about 10 years old, but maybe that's the issue, we'll see

@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 2 жыл бұрын
Very hot and a smell means there’s a short in the wiring. Or a defective transformer. Connect the transformer to the power but don’t connect the low voltage wires and see if it gets hot then. If so Disconnect immediately. Somewhere along the line one of your wires must be shorted out to another and the only way to do that is the hard way, follow the wires all the way.
@miniteeg
@miniteeg 2 жыл бұрын
@Mr. Hardware it looks like the short circuit is on the ring itself as the 2 wires connected to the terminals get warm immediately. This must have happened when I first connected the Ring directly to the wall wires that were connected to the stock doorbell without connecting the transformer first. This lasted for few seconds but was probably enough to make a short on the Ring board. Luckily it works with the battery power. I will try to find someone who can dismantle the Ring device and check it out.

@@AntonioClaudioMichael The house is 15 years old in Idaho. We have an intercom system (including for our front doorbell) and the doorbell pumps through all of the intercoms to ring. I'm at a loss of where to find the transformer. It's not by the breaker box. Do I need to take a look behind all of my intercom units in the house?

What is the wire gauge that goes from the transformer to the ring bell camera?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 Жыл бұрын
Usually 18 gauge is sufficient, but if I’m running a long distance (over 50’) maybe I’d use 16 gauge.

Thanks for the response. My transformer went out, replaced but I think I burned out the new one as just a few minutes later stopped working

@@Marco-bb7np that is a good indication that your bell wires are shorted out somewhere between here and the buttons and chime. It’s just making the transformer run full speed until it burns up.

@@Marco-bb7np it is not uncommon for an amateur wiring this up causing a dead short in the wiring. Often when a feed to the chime is at the transformer location. Consider a pro to look in on you……

Title says "Ring & Nest Doorbells Require 24Volt" but the video says 16V. So, which is it?
@MrHardware1
@MrHardware1 9 ай бұрын
This is an old video, when they first came out they were to run on a 16 V transformer which is the old doorbell transformer. At the time upping the transformer to a 24 V transformer allowed the unit to run properly. I believe the power draw on the ring doorbell has been adjusted by the manufacturer to run on a little less power than the first ones sold.

@@MrHardware1 So, should we use a 16v or 24v transformer? After a lot of thought & research, I ordered the 24v one, but wonder if it may prematurely wear out the gadgets. Also, how to tell if a model has a thermal cut-off? I got the Maxdot brand.

Sucks when you can’t find the existing old transformer in the house.

Had that same problem. Couldn't locate the transformer to save my life. Watched this video and immediately found it mounted to the top of the junction box right above a wired smoke alarm in the basement. Could barely see it.

Attaching the doorbell to the mount is a little difficult but once it locks into place it seems extremely sturdy. kzbin.infoUgkxxHZwMa8CsRjYhf9s4W8w0Dwm47uytWOp I replaced my regular doorbell with this and hard wired it in, using my existing wires and mechanical chime. It works perfect so far and integrates perfectly with my blink camera system. It also works seamlessly with Alexa

I don’t think so, they just don’t stress that some units require a higher wattage than many homes have available.

What Blair said... also, I think the doorbell companies don't tell you to add the power requirements of your chime (while chiming) to the power requirements of the "smart" doorbell (while streaming hi-def video and two way audio)... that kicks it up a bit, and most household transformers can't keep up. I would even doubt a 30VA, depending on the chime and the doorbell combination. These smart doorbells can be touchy when the voltage dips below 16V for even a moment. Which will happen on a transformer that is getting close to max (ie. Amp draw is too high). This video is right, I would rather try to keep the voltage near the recommended range instead of using a 24V to cover the difference. Even if the doorbell says it can handle 24V... a new 24V transformer puts out more than 24V... so thats risky.... same issue with the chime. So more VA (instead of more V) to cover the combined loads, plus a healthy bit extra.
