How To Upgrade Soldered GPU on MacBook Pro : Introduction to X-GPU Project

In this video we explained how we are able to upgrade Desktop GPU to a MacBook. This is not the same like we use it with any thunderbolt eGPU on the market, this is technically like a GPU directly soldered to the CPU. Very good work. I do not think many 2011 macbook owners would want or pay for the eGPU but its amazing that it works. I recently threw one of those 15in failed gpu laptops away because even the repairshops i sell to did not want it for parts, because they already have lots of them.

You can disable the GPU and run it with the GPU in the CPU.

I am impressed by your video! Question: I have a MBP 10,1 mid 2012 15", A1398. Fitted with i7 and 16 gb ram, 500 gb ssd, running macOS 11.7.5. Question: what is the possibility of upgrading this machine to i9 and NVMe SSD with max ram. I am so used to this machine and work with it all day therefore I don't want to change it but consider upgrade. If it is possible, and affordable I could send the comps to you.

How about doing a video of CPU and GPU upgrades that don't leave the 2012 to 2014 15" MacBook Pros confined to a desk? Maybe upgrading the 2012 retina and early 2013 non-retina models to Intel Core i7-3940XM and Nvidia GeForce GTX 680MX 4GB and upgrading the mid-2014 retina Intel Core i7-4980HQ models to Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M 4GB?

Wow, this is really impressive. I wonder if it would be possible to make an adapter to fit an MXM card inside the laptop? With only NVME drive there should be space for a GPU, fan and heatsink where the DVD and HDD used to be.

Hi, its a long discussion why its impossible. but to simplify it: 1. macbook logicboard dont have much power to support MXM GPU, and Magsafe only maxed at 85W. Typical imac with MXM has 205Watt minimum. 2. a lot of heat coming from the MXM has to be removed, designing heatsink with fan is not cheap. 3. MXM is scarce and used, not new, while PC GPUs available widely new. and several others that we wont explain here, that's why we discarded the idea at the first place.

If you get something like a 5700xt or 6800xt, do you have to load in a kext, or would a newer Mac in my case 2017 iMac Pro automatically recognize the GPU. To the best of your knowledge is there a way access the PCI lanes in an iMac. I'm going in to upgrade the CPU, and RAM 🐏 so I figure its worth exploring.

Could this method work on later MacBooks as well? I know they don’t have the convenient dvd slot, but would it work in principle for a 2012 or early 2013 Retina MacBook Pro with 650m graphics? What about a late 2013-2015 retina MacBook that shipped with only iGPU? Seems like it would really expand the customer base of this project to add PCIe expansion to more modern laptops

Yes it will certainly work with retina series with soldered GPU. We own a 2015 MBP 15inch with X-GPU adapter, but how its gonna look like - we will tell it on our future update.

@@PsyOpRecs Technically yes it is possible, but after considering a lot of bandwidth limitation on 13inch 2012(we can only extract PCIe x4 from this board, not pcie x8), so we've decided to only apply X-GPU modification to 15inch lineup only. 13-inches still can get NVMe support though(because NVMe is PCie x4)

With the same mechanism, can you try upgrading the cpu to something like i9 cpu ?

to upgrade it to i9, it needs solder pad redesign, and of course, it also need SMC(with program) from i9 generation, new BIOS EFI for coffee lake, so yeah, pretty much impossible unless theres a lot of engineers working on the project.

for now the only available kit to end user is for NVMe, this is the link: www.tindie.com/products/iboffrcc/a1286-nevbolt-2-nvme-kit/ for the whole mod: nvme+xgpu, we only offer in house installation for now. the kit will be released in the future. for the 32gb support, this specific cpu can only accept 32gb if only it has 4 ram slot. which is, impossible.

Hi, the external monitor should be connected directly to the X-GPU display ports. If your GPU has 4 ports, then you will get 4 external monitor.
