How to upgrade The CPU in your Dell Inspiron 660S

Quickie vid of upgrading the CPU in a Dell Inspiron 660S (small for factor)
I've done a bunch of these with I7 3770 and even Xeon CPU's - They are made for IVY Bridge family chips and ehhhh .. the machines are a little better quality than most Dells so I dont mind doing a video on them -- Ask me about other Dells and I'll generally laugh and tell you to go buy an HP Enterprise Workstatio for no reason other than I hate retail crap machines .. The only saving grace to these little 660's is a good motherboard - Stock power supply is typical cheap Dell crap so if you are adding a good video card, I would strongly recommend putting in a beefier power supply

Only time I exer have any problems with them is if they get too much video card for the power supply ... Otherwise, as long as you dont overclock them, they seem pretty unkillable

I've gotten away with i7 3770 and 3770k .. but just stock turbo and clocks enabled -- no overclocking -- that or no video card in the machine with it -- even then .. keep the video card around 70 watts or so ... somewhere around a 90 watt ATI cheapie radeon I started eating power supplies and just went ahead and upgrading -- 3770 or the xeons I tried -- chip itself is around 90 watts -- board sucks some -- so do your keyboard, rodent , etc.. that power supply is dinky .. but I've done it for a while with plain 3770 and 3770 k -- never tried an s -- if it's ivy bridge family it should work

My mom found this same one in the trash in a rich neighborhood. She gave it to me and i upgraded it with an i7-3770s 4c/8t cpu, 8gb ddr3 ADATA XPG ram (2x4gb sticks), MSI LP GT 1030 GDDR5 2GB video card, PNY 240gb ssd boot drive and a 2tb Western Digital HD and upgraded the cpu cooler to a Vetroo M2 with Rainbow lights all running Windows 11 Home. Everything runs great, Overwatch 1080p med setting 90 percent resolution steady 60 fps, gta 5 high setting 1080p, ultra textures 55ish fps and Tomb raider 2013 1080p gets 60 fps on high settings. I'm very pleased with this little sleeper lol. It will also take 16gb of ram but why would anyone do that? With the limitations of the video card you can fit in this case you wouldn't use over 8gb, if i ever changed it to another case or changed the mobo and case i would probably put 16gb in it

I popped a monster power supply externally on one and ran a little 1/2 height 4gb quadro Pascal family with better results than anything 8gb -- The chipset limitation of above 4gb addressing is in the way -- the CPU loves them -- but the chipset does crazy shit with 8gb cards - like , you gotta pull em and boot from vga every time you want a bios screen .. or they wont shut off the onboard and every other kernel update you have to mess with your X .config again to get openCL/GL, directx, etc. to default to the card instead of the CPU's video crunch section -- windows just re-install the drivers every other windows feature update .. but it's still a neverending hassle with over 4gb cards on that chipset

Xeon e3 1290 v2 is about the hottest chip that hole will hold ... physically there's a no fit for a v3 ... go e31285l v2, if power supply is a concern (shouldn't be though) ...

Yes, you most definitely can (there's even a xeon that works)... Only Caveats: update your bios from Dells latest and greatest off their website first -- And Do Not attempt to overclock your chip or video card (unless you put in a much bigger power supply) i7 3770k works.. and I've done a few with scrap i5's -- look at the family name of the chip and the socket number for the i7 3770k -- as long as you pick a chip with the same socket and family it will work ..... i5's have a problem with they try to initialize the bios video too long and you never see a bios screen if you have an add-in video card is the only thing I've noticed funky and that was primarily with FirePro's - I haven't had that issue with Radeon Pro or nvidia Quadro cards (did have it with an nvidia gtx something or other low profile older 1050 I think) ... The above family and socket lookup method works for any intel socket computer you know the family and socket of chip for BTW - quickest way to look up what'll work in whatever is in front of you at the time

@@pac1fic055 I'd have to go home and fire one up and look -- but I do remember it was the latest one from their website -- the one that comes in with The dell system app is older -- I may be remembering that backwards .. but I had to go with the newer one to get my Xeons to light up the regular quad core lit up fine on either but the 8 thread quad cores didn't light up off the older one - had the same deal on a T5820 - the one from one was newer than the other.

Hey man, I have some questions for you. My motherboard model is DIB75R Pinevalley MB, or 0XFWHV i can’t identify which number identifies the model but I want to upgrade to a Xeon 1230v2. Latest bios would come from the manufacturer .. as to cpu compatibility, I'd have to look it up same as you ... but the rule with Intel is pretty simple sane socket+same family of chip (meaning I've bridge in ivy bridge board or haswell in haswell board etc.) = usually works ... Dell is tricky with the bios on their download site .. the second newest you can always download.. the first newest is only available through that dell update/optimize utility ...

.Normally psu bist light blink everytime you plug the computer. Right. But now , i plug no sign of light anymore. (Dell 3060 sff psu) Bro how do know if the power supply is dead. I try to test my psu, only psu motherboard and processor are intact. My psu is BIST BUTTON FREE. I remove the 4pin 8pin connector from the motherboard , then plug the psu. The Bist light glow for 3 second, i put back again, it won't glow. No sign of light, I try also psu test using paper clip method jamper black and green the psu bist light glow and the fan is spinning Is my motherboard is dead or my psu?

Sounds like psu or cpu .. I have a PS tester .. also most of these cheapie 20 dollar pcie diagnostics cards will show at least the code/test point it hangs on (and damn near all of them report power fault conditions)

@@droidspro1749 Supposedly Dell 9like HP0 always has beep codes or flash codes ... but a bad power supply very often will mak a bad mobo test bad even if it is not .. ... I've had great luck with HP's beep and flash codes for debugging.. I've always found Dells to be pretty useless in the self-diagnostics features area...

I've got a 3770 in one and a 3770k in another ... Secret is to update your bios first .. Whoever you're reading apparently doesn't know intel chips interchange by family and socket (family is like kabylake, haswell, sandy bridge, etc. Socket is your socket type - 771, 775, 1155, 2011, etc.)

I like the i7 3770 for the sole reason that it (like it's bigger xeon brother) supports more instructions than the junky i5 and i3's ... You'd need a decent video card any way you go .. But unless you are playing really old games, the 660 is pretty useless ... At this point in time, it's pretty much what you give grandma to check her email or put Linux on and turn it into a media server ...

Socket 1155 .. and the rule with Intel is: long as the socket and family name are the same, it works .. I anything is a stripped xeon period . The lower the number behind the i, the more it's been stripped ... by family name I mean: ivy bridge, sand bridge, kaby lake, haswell etc. They all have a family name ... use the latest and greatest bios if the chip is same family but came out after the board ... these are intel boards (OEM for dell by Intel - couple of lesser alien ware used the same boards)

Good question .. Likely not -- I've never tried an s - I've tried a K and a straight i7-3770 with no problems in video editing apps (cyberlink powerproducer/media suite 15 and 17 both and Cinelerra on linux) Other than dont bother trying to overclock (i7-3770k) due to the power supply cant take it for long I've had zero problems -- side note: when a straight 3770 is installed with an AMD video card (cant remember which family) it wont let you into the bios without pulling the card, getting into the bios from the onboard and then popping the card back in after

I found an i7 - 3770 on Amazon for 50 USD and I have a full size ATX case and a GTX 1060 6 GB card and a new 500 watt power supply. Do you think if I build this system the stock cooler the one you have there is gonna be enough for gaming or do I need to buy new cooler? The whole point of this is to use GTX 1060 to its limits and for that 3770 is ideal. There shouldn't be any bottlenecking. Just worried about cooler

@@NishantSoniTV You wont touch the max capabilities of the 1060 on that board -- not even with a Xeon.. Cooler wise yahhh .. if yer gonna put it in a big case, it's worth the extra watts for a liquid cooling kit.. Small power supply is why I generally just keep the stock intel coolers on the little 660's (HP Z220's too) Xeon is the only chip in that family that even comes close to getting the throughput of the board but the i7's did OK... If you are keeping the little i3 and not overclocking it, the stock cooler is wayyyyy more than adequate (i3's are so stripped down there's nothing left in em to get hot is the industry joke)

Some guy on reddit said the VRM on Dell Inspiron 660S were ment to handle up to 3rd generation Core i5 so he doubts if VRM will force i7 to throttle down? Will you please run a peak performance test and help me out if it can sustain?

If you did the bios update before the chip it should be quick ... Did you goof and put in a spinning hard drive instead of an ssd? (They like intel ssd's best if boot times are a concern)

Without looking it up, I dont know -- But i wouldn't recommend an i3 to my worst enemy anyway (unless you are just building an email plinker for old people -- then it's OK) General rule of thumb though is keep it to same socket and same family (IE: sandy bridge, kaby lake, haswell etc. - whatever family the hole supports) and it will work --- applies to damn near every intel hole (socket) .. ALWAYS make sure you have the latest and greates bios flashed before installing a new cpu though
