I usually just use an expander to stretch my peaks up while lowering the body of the sound so the peak jumps up above my more quiet sustained elements. That way I can have it be heard and in your face while not getting in the way of my elements with less transient content.

hey bro, great tutorial! i might sound like a noob but im learning, with the threshold how come you only brang it down to 10db when it was peaking at 8db? Cause doesnt that mean its not doing anything as its not touching where its peaking? cheers bro!
@ramoorooh10825 жыл бұрын
-8db is louder than -10db, so bringing down the threshold to -10db is essentially allowing you to compress anything over that threshold, hence you get -2db of gain reduction.

A compressor just takes the attack of a sound (aka transient) and brings it down without the rest of the sound being too affected. Start listening to how hard things are hitting in other people's mixes and you'll start hearing it. Listen to how producers will bring down the transient of some things to let the transients of others (usually drums) shine through. Its also used as a contrasting element, like having a part with not a lot of very "pointy" transients that goes into a part with a lot of transient activity.

Subbed, great tut. I understand the concept of compression and what it does. What I dont understand is when to use it? I just dont hear any difference. Only reason I would use it is on vocals, when some words are way louder then others, and bass cause not all bass notes tend to be the same volume. I cant hear the difference and find any reasons to use it on other elements. Pls some examples on that! ;)
@ramoorooh10825 жыл бұрын
You're not really supposed to hear a difference, unless you're going for a specific effect. What you already said about using it to level loud peaks is pretty much what a compressor is used for, but in the end you shouldn't really hear it as such, unless again you use it to shape tone etc. You usually only need to use it on very dynamic sounds, in case of vocals or live recordings. Most electronically produced stuff doesn't need much, if any compression, especially as samples and VST generated sounds are not as dynamic as real recordings. You are using it correctly, and that's good.

@felipenavarro53405 жыл бұрын
Compress before eq and the soundgoodizer could warp your kick in many shapes
@kylehegger55495 жыл бұрын
Although you didn't cover parallel compression in this video i was wondering if you could answer a quick question on that topic. So When parallel compressing, should the parallel compression channel be receiving the sound raw, or be receiving the signal from the channel you added effects to? If it is supposed to receive the sound raw, would it be necessary to add the same eq that the channel with the effects has on it? In other words, is parallel compression 2 of the exact same signals except one is mega compressed, or is it one singal raw with another signal with effects on it?
