So your doctor told you to use an enema - now what??
Trust me, I've been there! Enemas can be scary and uncomfortable and definitely not fun, but I promise there are worse things! The most important thing is to try and relax, stay calm, and get as comfy as possible. After that, it's just a waiting game!
Let me know in the comments if you found this video helpful, or if you have any other questions about Enemas, colonoscopy prep, sigmoidoscopies, or all things IBD!

This is excellent instructive and no-holds-barred (no pun intended) video on doing a rather unpleasant but necessary (for some) activity. Your respectful yet light hearted delivery took much of the mystery and fear out of performing the procedure.

Constipation is dangerous for many reasons... In particular with myself, after many days, the ammonia levels can rise and reek all sorts of havoc... I can tell because my eyes start to get a yellowish tinge to them. But on the flip side, my medication can REALLY make you GO. (Lactulose) You can easily get dehydrated if you are not careful. My Fiancé also struggles with ABS and has found your videos very helpful with the information that you provide. I have told you this before, but Thank you again for what you do Alice. Just knowing others are dealing with these issues as well, makes things a bit less daunting. 🎻

This was so helpful, thank you. I was having an MRI for prostate check, and did the Microlax 5ml, I was so worried all night just thinking about it if I would get it right otherwise would have to cancel appt and more waiting time. But all worked fine. Your words of reassurance and tips really helped, I first showered (middle area only), then, I didn't have any Vaseline so used some Cetaphil white body creme, put some on a bit of TP, then wipe down there!, then lay on my L side, with R knee coming up to stomach, this is a good position, and inserted and squeezed, got most of it, and heard this glugging sound inside that area, pulled it out slow, then could see there was more still in tube when squeezing gently, so reinserted and squeezed out the remainder, then kept buttocks tight so no fluid came out and lay on L side and R side for about 10 or 15 mins each, which was probably too much as I could "Feel it" after about 5-10 mins. Tip, time your stool a couple of days before at the time you want to do the enema then you will "have fuel" for the enema day. I just lay on my bed, toilet is not far but I can see how urgent it could potentially be as it works quick. Good luck everyone, it was my first time doing this and I hope the last!!!

Use a thin fever thermometer. Put it in a few cm only and leave it free. This is the perfect angle for inserting the nozzle. I dislike those bottles with the hard nozzle. In Germany there are 120 ml enema bags with a short hose and a rounded end cap (freka clyss). The application is much easier with hardly any risk of injury. The last branch of the intestine is on the left side. For the insertion the position on the left side is perfect. When you want to reach the higher sections, you should move to the supine position after a few minutes, then to the right side.

Omg, I have been experiencing so many poop issues lately. To the point of spending 3 hours and more feeling like something needs to come out. Have never taken laxatives in my life. Now I have been trying everything. Miralax, fiber, digestive enzymes, Colace, suppositories, castor oil, and I still don't feel relief. It's very scary and makes me get absolutely nothing done, and I'm late for work almost every day. I had no idea that so many different things could be going on when it comes to changes in bowel habits. It plays havoc on the mindset too. Thanks for the video. I am now a subscriber. Not an easy topic to make videos about. Kudos to you. Reading a few of the comments makes me a little afraid to do the enema. Especially people saying it burns horribly. I can't imagine the trauma being worse than spending hours on the toilet and having to get up feeling like my anus no longer allows poop to pass through it. Lately, my right kidney area aches so bad that I can't be comfortable even when in bed. I don't know if it's from spending so much time straining my muscles in weird positions on the toilet. Or maybe trapped gas building up, or something even worse. I am starting to sweat a lot when trying to go, and for the past couple of days, feel pretty nauseated when the sweating starts. It's pretty similar to the same feeling one gets when ya have the flu or feel sick in your stomach. I have not considered that maybe I am constipated or impacted because I have put on a rubber glove and tried to remove whatever it is that is making me feel as if something is there. But maybe I couldn't get in there far enough. I bought 2 fleets and am willing to give it a try. At this point, I will try anything because my next step is to try and explain all these crazy symptoms to one of our small-town doctors, who also terrifies me. Either that, or I am afraid I am going to be found in an emergency situation while on the toilet. I can't believe, I am to the point that I am now explaining my very personal, embarrassing problem on a public forum. It's something that I suffer in silence with otherwise. I consider myself a very calm, don't worry about much type of person. These days, I am not that. I wake up and go to bed every single day, with this on my mind. It's hard to focus on anything else. It's also hard to go to work pretending like I am happy-go-lucky, and every time I move, I am reminded that my anus is having big issues. Sorry so long, but maybe I will sleep a little better knowing I got to try a little bit to explain what is controlling my life right now. Ps. I also bought Fleet liquid glycerine suppositories. I am wondering if I should maybe try those first instead of the enema. It's really hard to know what laxative type is best. Especially when someone has never used a laxative. I am 62 yrs old young, and realizing I know nothing about laxatives, enemas, and various forms of fiber. It seems to me that one size does not fit all! Lol.. Thanks again for your educational videos on a topic that isn't so easy to talk about. Kudos to you! Well done my friend! 👏

@@dynomite1988it will get you a point where you cannot hold it in anymore at which point you will need to use the toilet. I imagine it’s different for everyone, I recall it taking 5-10 minutes in my experience. You should hole the position you chose for administration until you absolutely cannot anymore which is why I recommend doing this in the bathroom so you don’t have far to travel. Hope that helps!
@pinkeHelga
@pinkeHelga 4 ай бұрын
After the first application you will feel like you cannot hold anymore after a few minutes. With more experience you can hold it more than 10 minutes. You can overcome the first urge to empty and feel comfort after that. The colon grumbles and the enema goes deeper. However, when holding too long, it might happen that the enema does not come out. You should have ready some enema bag to rinse the fleet out. Holding the fleet too long could lead to an increased phosphate level. This doesn't necessarily have to be critical but should be avoided. Saline enemas should come out after max. 20-25 minutes.

@ChronicallyMusical

There are definitely different types of enemas for different things. Sometimes suspension enemas are used to treat diseases like IBD. In my experience, I have only used saline enemas to deal with an impacted stool or prep for a scope procedure. Unfortunately cramping and stomach pain is just part of the process but that usually goes away once I use the bathroom!

Ugh kind of both? In my experience it's not comfortable. Especially when using 2 back to back, the stomach cramping can be pretty painful, but it does eventually pass.
