I have DC'd Janome computerized machine that I got on clearance (2016-17?) that's basically the same in terms of all the features like this one. It only really has a few more decorative stitches built in, mine's just lacking the thread cutters on the bottom plate but that's ok. lol But I'm impressed this is now the "beginner level" of sewing machines on the market considering the one I got 2 decades ago could properly satin stitch if its life depended on it. Older technology coming down in price has been a big win.

Not a beginner sewer here, but my machine is also a Brother. You did a great job explaining everything I was confused about when I first started sewing! The one thing I will stress when changing a needle is to hold on to it with you other hand so it doesn't fall. Usually of the needle falls, it's easy enough to get out with tweezers, but one time my needle was stuck in the body of my machine and it was difficult to remove

I have a question about this machine. I let it sit for a couple years and I want to start using it again. The instructions say not to let it sit for long periods. I think it has to do with the oil already inside? Can you talk about that? How will you know if it is not in good order? Or adding to it? It was not stored in too hot or cold temps.

You could also probably have luck contacting a Brother sewing machine dealer and ask their opinion.

Sewing 45+ years and servicing rebuilding machines for a decade or so. Plug your clean, unbroken machine without fraying cords in. Put some extra fabric in front of the foot, turn it on and go. If it goes but it seems sluggish, let all the parts go for about 10 minutes, let it rest an hour or a day and come back in a day go again. If it doesn’t seem perky, yes, put it in for service, oil may have hardened, beats and bearings may need oil. Modern machines don’t need oil like vintage machines from the 70s and back, but they DO sometimes need it. Always store where it’s protected from dust. Have fun!
