I was introduced to your channel with the review of this Bother machine. I don't get to say this often, but you are a very gifted teacher. You carried through each step so calmly and never missed a beat. I love how you explained everything as if I was sitting there watching you. Though I have some experience sewing, there is always so much to learn, So. I will be watching more of your videos for sure. I keep thinking you would be an excellent teacher in an actual beginners class (not on YTube), they would learn so much from you.

Here is my opinion of the Brother ST150HDH: I made 7 button up shirts with this machine. This machine has trouble in tight areas that contain several layers of fabric. For example sewing a hem that goes through a flat felled seem will be a trouble spot. Another area that this machine has trouble is the ends of where a shirt collar attaches to the bodice and the ends where cuffs attach to the sleeves. For fabric below 5oz per yard the machine generally works ok except for the trouble I mentioned above. I also made a heavier chambray shirt. For this the machine also generally worked ok, but it messed up a seem that I had to go over again, but eventually fixed it. I suggest if you are seriously into sewing. Use the Brother ST150HDH primarily for button holes and zig zag stitches. For your straight stitch get an industrial Juki DDL 8700. The Juki 8700 is only $799 and it has servo motor that is larger than the Brother ST150HDH.
@TockCustom3 жыл бұрын
I support this comment for sure. I would recommend switching to a smaller needle for those problem areas, but an entry level Juki can easily fill that gap if people are into having multiple machines 😀
@JohnDoe-bf1fw3 жыл бұрын
@@TockCustom Thanks, I'll try switching to a smaller needle on the problem areas. I have been using 110/18 for everything. I plan on getting the industrial Juki in the near future. I want make things like jean jackets. Happy Sewing, Rob

I had a Brother machine for 40 years and I called it my workhorse. I thought it was time for a change, bought a different brand. Disappointed. Since I sew a great deal of fleece, I took a look at Brother machines again, this time heavy duty. I purchased one from Amazon and then looked for a video to help me understand it. I came across you and instantly saw that I could learn from you. Two things: Are you a Packer fan? And you DO have a thread cutter! :}

Thanks. The one that I just purchased is the LX3817. Basically, I just wanted to be able to do my own alterations. And the 83.18 dollar price at Walmart, including tax, was STILL a lot less than the price that tailor shops wanted to charge, for altering a bunch of work uniforms. But the fact that you can sew LEATHER with these, is impressive. Because I am into knife making. And every knife needs a leather sheaf. Keep up the good work!

Great tutorial/review. I haven't sewn anything in a couple of decades and recently out of necessity I needed to make some masks for my family and I. So I busted out the old sewing machine (it is very basic and quite old but a good one to learn on - Kenmore 385). I had to shake off the rust but as soon as I became comfortable it was so much fun and so rewarding. My five year old daughter didn't know her dad could sew and as soon as she saw me at the machine she wanted doll sheet sets, pillows, a cape, etc.. I found your channel, subscribed, and watched a couple of videos and saw this series on the Brother machine. Anyway long story short I ordered a Brother ST150HDH today from the Brother website. I figured it would be a good all around workhorse machine. Hopefully it will get here soon. In the meantime I look forward to binge watching your videos - thanks and keep it up.

You’ve got good speaking skills.clear vocabulary, use of nouns. (Pronouns aren’t good: this, that ?). Camera work is good also. Enjoy watching out of curiosity. 75 yr old, sewn since I was ten. Own many machines. The new ones are fantastic: threader, thread cutter, etc. discovered Brother. Did most of my sewing on an Elna Super bought in 70’s, still my favorite. But now you can easily embroider and Brother is bang for buck and easy to learn using. Most machines are now made in the far east.regarding sewing through leather check needle type and thread weight. Thank you for sharing your review of this amazing Brother machine. I thought I would add that since there are so many different kinds of machines out there and people have not been sewing for some time as it has become a dying art, most do not know that the bobbins are different. I took a look at a friends machine for her and she had an old metal one in it and didn't know why she had big problems. Would this machine use the SA-156 as a lot of newer Brothers do now? I have just ordered this machine off Amazon after reviewing your video a few times but missed your link. Sorry!!

I forget the name of the bobbins this machine uses - but yes, they're just the standard clear plastic bobbins (not the rounded edge ones, the flat top/bottom ones) Also I think the machine comes with like 8 of them, so you should be fine :)

Thank you! I have made up my mind. I will buy from your link above, this will fit my needs since I am a very beginner sewer. I just bought a Cricuit and made stickers now I am ready to sew.

Hi Tock, Thanks for sharing this vid. I'm curious how this compares to the other Brother machines you have. Is it a stronger motor? Would you say it has a stronger needle punching power but is that because of the gearing or motor? This is not explained anywhere in the manufacture info. What's in the specs that make it HD? Thanks again for sharing this review.

Are you happy with the ST150 after using it for a while. Reviews are mixed on Amazon. Jeans? Light cotton like men’s shirt material

i really appreciate your videos . i bought a st150hdh because of the videos . i can fumble through what i need to for basic straps but trying to improve , when i do a box stitch on webbing the top looks fine but the other side is a mess . why is that underside bunching up so much ? which setting can i play with to make this more presentable?

I got one of these...the needle bent once and messed the whole machine up. I even replaced the needle and nope bent that one too. Had to send it back. I will try one more time and if not get a different brand 🙄 got this one because soooo many ppl said it was sooo good 🤷♀️🤦♀️

Tock do you have any thoughts on mechanical vs computerized sewing machines? (I’m trying to decide between this and their HD mechanical one ST371.) I’ve sewed a bit before but always stopped because of the old machine having issues. I want one thats dependable, and it scares me that computerized machines might cost more to get fixed. Love your videos!!

Can this machine also be used as a light duty/regular sewing machine? So, could this replace my basic regular machine and then also just be able to do heavy duty?

I am thinking of getting this machine. Do you have to hold down the backstitch button the whole time or if you press it once will it back stitch a little? Thanks 😁
@TockCustom4 жыл бұрын
You do have to hold it while backstitching, but only for a short moment as you only need to do a couple stitches for a proper backstitch. You'll get the hang of it fast :)

I recently bought a brother 3701 while stationed in Japan (Navy) to do uniforms for guys. Doing patches for uniforms has been good and profitable, and thinking of grabbing something with a little more "umph". Do you think buying another machine might be overkill for what Im doing?

Tock: When you test the capabilities of a machine, you tend to go over the same stitch line for every pass. So, are you really going through all those layers, or is it just the piercing power for one additional layer? Also, when you briefly turn the test piece over, it's difficult to see if your tension was correct, as all we see is a jumble of thread. Having White & Black thread for bobbin & needle would also help. Other than that -- Great Videos!

I sew patches on letterman jackets. This machine might be perfect. Patch thru the wool front and patches on leather sleeves

My needle refused to go down. After I put a little oil ( I was scared to do so because the manual says that we shouldn't) around the bearing it worked like a charm

Can you use a heavy duty sewing machine like a regular sewing machine or should it be reserved for heavier projects?
@TockCustom4 жыл бұрын
I've only had this machine a few weeks, and I have to say I'm really impressed that I'm able to do some of my more delicate projects. I've tailored jersey knit t-shirts, made woven cotton pants... and it does a terrific job. This has quickly become my go to "sew-all" for pretty much everything. I just have to put in the appropriate needle, and it just works. Also, I forgot to mention in the video, but the stitches per minute is WAY higher than I thought it would be compared to my other Brother machines. I would honestly recommend this for really anyone (beginner or enthusiast), for pretty much any project. Thanks for watching! Hope you're doing terrific this week :)

Hello.. Several months ago you did a review of this machine. Would you please do an update review..Now that you have used this machine for several months would you still recommend it ? What issues have you encountered if any? Do you feel this machine lives up to the company's claim of being strong & tough & heavy duty? Would you recommend it over the singer heavy duty line or janome or juki hd's? Thank you very much . your input is greatly appreciated.
@TockCustom3 жыл бұрын
I've been using this machine for over a year, and with normal maintenance and oiling, it still feels brand new. I regularly hear this will out perform and outlast the Singer HD. Comparing the ST150HDH and a Juki is kind of hard though - one is a $300 machine, and the other is a $2000 industrial belt fed machine. All in all, I still use my Brother HD and use it everyday 😊

I've only had mine for 4 months and I adore it. I use it more than my brother 7000i.

How do you properly adjust the tension. I have a heavy duty brother machine that I got for making nylon straps. But no matter how I adjust the tension I tend to always get a birds nest on the bottom. Most of the time I am only doing two layers of strap and occasionally three.
@TockCustom4 жыл бұрын
First let me just say that I've gotten enough comments on this to actually go ahead a make a video for it, so I'll probably do that this week. I just need to find my tiny screwdriver :) Second - There are two tension settings in most machines. The most obvious one is on top, with a wheel that says "Tension" and adjusts the Top-Thread tension only. However, there is a way to adjust the tension of the bobbin thread independently, which is not as obvious. So when you get the 'birds nest' of fabric, that usually means your bobbin tension has become too loose, and will not have enough grip on the backside of your material. You need to remove the seam allowance plate, take out the small harness that the bobbin goes into, and tighten a very small screw until you have your desired tension. It's not difficult, but its also not a commonly known fact about sewing machines. If you absolutely cannot figure it out, please let me know... because I plan on having a very short video up about this soon. Thank you so much for your comment! Have a great weekend :)

How does it compare to the mechanical version?

Hey, Tock, I just received this new machine. Appreciate your video cuz using the needle threader was tricky. My question involves my Brother 420, project runway model. The hand wheel started to make a grinding noise and after some more stitching it finally locked up completely. Repair shop was $150 plus any potential parts. I’d like to take it apart and fix it myself but I don’t know how to remove the case or hand wheel. I can emote the left cap but not the rest. Can you help?
