For my own dog I took a lot more time (several days) to get her confident with "the thing" through positive reinforcement before I even turned it on, on slow, for the first time. That took more time, but my dog was completely chilled and confident when I turned the treadmill on. Patience always pays in dog training in the long run.

Great work. As a long time dog owner of large breed or powerful breed dogs I would also encourage the owner work to become equally confident in handling the leach on both sides. Perhaps some strengthening exercises. When the dog perceives this handler is not as confident, as strong on her"off" side, he is confused and anxiety goes up as her anxiety does. Do

Steve, thank you for all your wonderful videos & helpful advice. I'm Dr Maynard over at IG by the way. I give a lot of my relating examples from the ICU setting. What I really liked is that you show how you should act while the dog is panicking. Truth is, in humans an "aww" reaction in that type of moment also nurtures the instability. During a code I may have 12+ people I am leading and there are times that some of the nurses, RT's, etc may panic. Calm, assertive guidance nurtures trust & confidence. I remember watching a consulting cardiologist that happened to be examining his patient when they coded. He started to panic & was yelling at the nurses. Some nurses I could see become very anxious, while a couple of the more confident nurses I watched push him aside. So basically no respect or confidence was nurtured. One thing I found very interesting was how you said while the dog first panicked, he looked to you to see if the floor moving was upsetting you or that you were "okay with it". In my life I've swam with great white sharks, had sea lions blow bubbles in my face, played hide & seek with harbor seals (they believe hiding their face behind a kelp leaf hides their sausage body also), fostered a cougar that like to suck your thumb to go to sleep (& would bite down a little if you tried to remove it before she was asleep), moved rattlesnakes away from the road where people walk (22 in one day once, many years ago of course). Hand fed wild raccoons, skunk, deer. Have interacted (not close enough to touch) wild lynx. Not that you should try & touch them. I've done all this ONLY because I don't have fear & always have respect for mother nature & the animals natural state. We as humans tend to want to touch everything when an interaction isn't dependent on touch. My point in all that, we can set a realistic goal for a dog or pet though so important to work with AND within it's natural behavior to achieve it. I'm so glad you have taken so much time to teach & share this. Thank you.
