Thank you very much, Daniel and Marie, for the lesson. At first, I thought topic would be simple but I was wrong. the lesson has given me some really delicate knowledge about adjectives. For the first time I know that there are gradable and ungradable adjectives and some adjectives require strict position to noun. like any vocabulary in English, an adjective has many different meanings. Every time when I cannot find the right meaning of a word in sentence, I usually resort to the Cambridge dictionary. It offers many examples with as many contexts so I finally can find the right meaning of the word. I am very pleased to know that you also suggest the Cambridge dictionary to the leaners in this lesson. Goodbye and see you next time in your Adverb topic.

could you please teach me the different between ungradable and non-gradable
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
Hi Duy. Some adjectives are gradable. That means they can have different levels. For example, ‘nice’ and ‘interesting’ are gradable. Something can be more interesting, or less interesting. There are different levels of ‘interesting’. Some adjectives are ungradable. That means that they’re binary-either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. For example, ‘unique’ is ungradable. Either something is unique, or it isn’t. You can’t have different levels of uniqueness. It’s a yes-or-no property. Ungradable adjectives have two types. Firstly, there are words with a strong meaning, like ‘delicious’, ‘exhausted’ or ‘furious’. Secondly, there are words with an absolute meaning, like ‘unique’, ‘true’ or ‘possible’. When we talk about ungradable adjectives, we mean both of these types. We're happy to help you in an online lesson as well if you'd like specific advice: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/about-our-online-english-teachers.

Hi Juan, these are both acceptable! When we say 'transport cost', 'transport' does function like an adjective in this situation, as it describes the kind of cost. Therefore, it becomes a noun phrase. The problem is main. I think about the passive voice in it sentence. What is the noun? if the problem is the noun. Is it a sentence just to say how important is it a problem. Using a direct identification of the problem like "fixing the car is .... problem", I am not an expert on grammar but I think would be more clear if the subject is clearly identified in the sentence. I am learning, is really helpful to verify in each sentence the subject is first and clearly specified, and try to choose first the subject, the object, or the passive voice, which makes it more complicated to do sentences and can produce confusion in learners like me. thanks

Gradable = can have different levels. Take 'hot' as an example. If you have two pots of water, one can be hotter, or less hot. There are different degrees - literally - of heat. Ungradable = binary, cannot have different levels. Take 'perfect' as an example. Either something is perfect, or it's not. There's no middle ground. Something can't be half perfect. Hope this helps!

How to know types of adjectives whether gradable or ungradeable in a writing
@Oxfordonlineenglish15 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamshaid, with these types of adjectives it's best to try and remember them. A good general rule is if it's an adjective that already increases the level of something, for example 'freezing' and 'frigid' are already an increased level of 'cold', they are ungradable. Try to make a list of these types of adjectives so you can study and try to remember them.

These are the general uses of adjectives, but what about nouns that can be used as adjectives. The question is: can all nouns be used as attributive, the answer will probably be no so which nouns can be used as adjectives? I think most learners know how to use adjectives when it comes to basic uses, but the problem is always with those that don't follow these rules. I know that all verbs can be changed to nouns by adding ing form, but in terms of adjectives there are so many verbs that we can change to adjectives by adding ing form, for instance: intrigue which is a noun and a verb can be used as adjectives by adding ing " intriguing" and so on. So, can all verbs be used as adjectives by adding ing form?
@Oxfordonlineenglish15 жыл бұрын
Hi Nawar, this is not the case for all verbs. However, it works for verb forms ending in ‑ing (present participles) or -ed or -en (past participles) that are used to modify nouns. For example, the present participle 'smiling' is used as an adjective here: 'The smiling baby is really cute'. Hopefully that makes sense!
