How to use/adjust a chain link gate latch

In this video, we explain how to use and adjust a standard fork latch for a chain-link driveway gates or double gate. If you find that your chain-link gate will not latch or close properly this video will probably show you why. Great video. Quick question, the company that installed my latch never put a rod in the ground for the cane bolt to drop in. From what I read, they recommend a 1 3/8" rod for it but how deep should it be and do you recommend setting it in concrete?

I have a gate pretty similar to this that I need to adjust. Right now its extremely hard to pull the forked pole up and down to close and open the gate. Its seems like both sides of the gate have gotten closer to each throughout the years and has made everything very tight. Have any suggestions?

Mr. Burke, there is a missing screw. I don't know if it's a self tapping one or not because it's missing. The hole in the latch is on one side only. There is no hole on the other side. My hole is on the other side of the latch compared to the one in this video. Is it easy to buy and install a self tapping screw if that's the one? thanks.

Joe, you should be able to easily screw in any self tapping screw that is the same size or slightly larger than the one originally installed. You can also explore the option of replacing the entire drop rod/latch. I believe you can pick them up at Home Depot or Lowes for less than $15.

Can you add a bar to the bottom to act as a ground rod for a double gate?

Jeff - I assume you are asking if a second drop rod can be added to the gate for added support? The answer would be yes to that question. You most certainly can it it would help support the bottom of the gate better.

John Burke I did some research this morning. I found a 36" bar with a system like this. I think it will work fine as I have a small dog who has figured out how to open a normal double gate latch. Thanks for the surprisingly fast response and I checked out your website. Have a good week!!!

If you are installing a 1 3/8" drop rod, which is typical for a chainlink double-drive, it will behoove you to install a 6-12" length of 1 5/8 20 weight pipe into the ground to receive the droprod.

My parents have a gate just like this and are having a problem mainly with locking it. You have to exert a lot of force to get it to come up and go back down into place- which is hard on them as they both have arthritis. Can you give any advice on what might need to be done to get it working smoothly again?

Hi Lara, it is possible that the hole (likely drilled into the concrete) needs to be cleaned out, or drilled out a little wider so the drop rod slips into and out of it easier. Have you checked this?

Some handle machanism may help lift the shaft up! A welder can do it for you :)

I have this exact setup. Problem is someone rammed a mower into the fence just hard enough to break the fork latch part off. I still have the part but it just sits on top of the pole. Can that be repaired? How much would an assembled stem and latch cost?

Joe Smith some of the fork assemblies are attached to the drop rod using a self tapping screw. Is that the case with yours? If so (and possibly if not) you might be able to use a self tapping screw to re-fasten it. You can also buy the entire assembly at home Depot (I believe) for around $10-$15 and just swap it out.

Thank you for the reply. I just checked and I'm not sure. The latch piece seems intact but doesn't sit flush onto the drop rod any longer. I'll have to see if there was a screw there before. The latch brand shows Master Halco. I can tell you that there's one screw hole on one side of the latch handle, not both side. I assume that's normal design. Thanks again. Also, one of the reviews on Amazon.com says that "a minimum of 2 3/16 inch required between gates" or between gate frame and gate gate post (my case). Is this true? Thanks. Doug

I just measured the width of the fence poles on either side of the gate and they measure 1-3/4" in diameter. How can I make this work with those measurements? My gate frame uses 1-3/8" poles and the gap between the frame and the gate is 2-3/8 ". Thanks Doug
