Would you look at that!!! I unearthed some of my dad's stuff, found a mixing board, but I don't know how to use one - a lot of stuff to look at. To the "internets" I went, find a video tutorial of some individual who is nice enough to share his know-how about mixer boards. Knowing that it's probably going to be the same concept across different brands, I clicked on the thumbnail from google results regardless of what the brand might be. Lo and behold! I have exactly the same mixer! MX2004A - only yours is blue. I have a silver variant. Haha! I couldn't be any happier!

Very recently (2019), for the first time in quite sometime, I felt the pull to go back to an analog desk, after watching videos and reading articles about the new SSL Origin analog console ( especially since its priced at around $50k, which is ridiculously inexpensive for an SSL). Starting out in ‘79/‘80, I came up in the era of tape machines, LFC’s, OB Racks and Patch Bays, and while there are some things that I DON’T miss about those days, I really do miss the tactile side of the craft; and, there was definitely something about the sonic vibe that was unique... It seemed that mixes were easier ( and quicker) to dial in on a desk, than on a DAW. Perhaps it was was because of the inherent limitations of the format; the fact that we weren’t obsessing (or couldn’t) over every tiny, minute detail, as can be done very easily in a DAW. Decisions had to be made, and committed to, because there wasn’t the hundreds of tracks available, with frame accurate editing and the easy ability to move things around on the timeline in the song. And the sound seemed to come together more quickly, with a pleasing cohesion and smoothness... But... then I’m jarred back to reality, and I remember the other side of analog, the not so good things: constant maintenance of desks and tape machines, editing tape with a grease pencil, razor blade, editing block and editing tape-and there was no “undo” button if you messed up an edit. In addition to that, the electric bill, as a result of having all that gear powered up all the time, the seemingly endless miles of cable to tie in every OB processor and tape machine track to every patch point on a 144 pt TT bay, that was connected to every aux, insert, DO, DI, and track and bus send and return of the desk... along with “total recall”, which in fact wasn’t even close to being “total” at all... I still think your video is valuable though- it’s a great lesson in signal chain, routing, gain structure, etc., and the knowledge of these things can easily be translated to virtual consoles in DAW’s. Thanks. 🙏

You were concerned leaving the Behringer mixer on unattended, that it might catch on fire. I hate to tell you bro but the Behringer gear, the early stuff that came out back in the day...that was an actual concern when the gear was in use during a live event or a budget recording session. It’d start sparking and smoking and then burst into flames. No joke 😆. It even had a built-in alarm system. When sparks and smoke started up, there’d be this gawd awful screeching in the mains and then everything would go quiet. That’s when the flames would start coming out of the back where the power input was. That description is from a personal experience of mine at a church where I was the board operator about 20 years ago. I’m sitting at the desk minding the store during the sermon and I thought I saw some sparks shooting out of the vent slits over where the power cable went in and then i thought I saw smoke. When it screeched, died and caught fire, I hit the master switch to off on the power conditioner, grabbed the fire extinguisher that was next to the desk that the board sat on and as I was hosing the base of the flames with retardant, I exclaimed loudly, “Come out of him Satan. Be ye cast out of poor brother Behringer. The power of Jesus compels you. Leave him beelzebub.” About then I got the fire put out. There was some laughter and some applause. That’s probably my funniest FOH board operator experience and why for the next 10 years I’d not touch anything with the Behringer brand on it that used more than a 9 volt battery.

Speaking of Behringer products with a 9-volt battery, they do make a nice cable tester. Although, I wish they'd release a model that can test ethernet _and_ TT (the CT100 tests TT cables but not ethernet, and the CT200 tests ethernet but not TT). Edit: The X32 seems to have worked out pretty well for them, though. I don't think it'd have gotten as popular as it did if that kind of unreliability was still a common problem.

So I should get a mixer to use when I livestream my voice, for my art instructional Twitch & UTube livestreams? I also make instructional videos recordings for UTube too... So again is it your opinion that I should get a mixer? I use ORBS program to stream; and Camtasia program to record my drawing visuals (on my Wacom Cintiq) and audio, at the moment; and any needed post editing. I'm a complete noobie to the whole mixer thing. As far as mixers; although I haven't a clue at this point whether I should get either an Yamaha EMX5 12-input stereo / powered mixer (with DSP effects), or the Yamaha MG12XU mixer. (Currently I use a Dell precision tower 7910; Onkyo stereo receiver, and Pinnicle L & R speakers w/ a bar center speaker, and big sub woofer. I use a Yeti Blue pro mic, plugged directly into computer by USB). Any help would be hugely appreciated.
@BobbyUnverzagt
@BobbyUnverzagt 6 жыл бұрын
With that microphone, you can't use a hardware mixer like this because it connects via USB, not XLR. Even if you got a mic that connected with XLR, you probably don't need a mixer if the only input you have is the mic. That's because you don't have another source to mix with. You could plug the mic straight into an audio interface. If you want more control over things like gain, equalizer, etc you could get a small mixer, one much smaller and cheaper than the ones you mentioned.

Hi there, Im a bit new in audio, sorry if some of the questions are too obvious. I need to record an event (people talking) and I need to get the sound from the mixer. The XlR are taken and also the mixer is very far from where I will put my camera(professional camera with XLR)... I'm gonna record the sound separately with my Tascam DR-60D MKii, the mixer at the venue is a "JBSYSTEMS MM-10".I have a cable wich is 1/4" balanced Jack to XLR, so I guess I could plug one side of the cable, the 1/4" Jack into the mixer and the XLR into my Tascam I have few questions. 1- Are the all the output from a regular mixer Line Level? 2- Can I connect any of the Mixer output to my tascam...XLR,6.5mm TR Jack,Auxiliar Sends,Subgroups..etc Is there any different btw them? 3- Can I use the headphones output from the Mixer to record the sound into my Tascam or professional camera? My Tascam has Line Level 1000 time Thanks you!!
@RealHomeRecording
@RealHomeRecording 6 жыл бұрын
1. No. 2. Yes, as long as the knobs are set on the Auxes. Pre-fader aux out would be your best bet. 3. Yes and I have used the headphone output on mixing boards during video shoots a few times. It is not ideal but if it's the only output available (or if the engineer is too dense to know/doesn't care how to route signals properly) then you take what you can get!

@RealHomeRecording
@RealHomeRecording 2 жыл бұрын
I would get a insert/patch cable which will have a quarter inch male phone connector on one end and two male RCA connectors on the other. Then you put that where it says insert near where the gain knob is and your equalizer should work. If you're equalizer is stereo/2 channels then by two of those patch cables.

I think most mic pre's are mono on audio interface. A while ago I tried putting stereo left and right into my M-track line inputs and was still in mono. Haven't tried it on Apollo Twin though. Found this post on gear slutz about stereo inputs for audio interface when trying to find out what i was doing wrong back then. www.gearslutz.com/board/newbie-audio-engineering-production-question-zone/730027-all-line-trs-inputs-audio-interfaces-mono.html

+blood lord (Chaotic Sonics) This was my mistake and I should have included the part of the video where I was choosing the inputs on the computer screen. They are labeled "Left" and "Right" in REAPER when the iD14 is set to Direct Sound as opposed to ASIO. Whenever I record voiceovers with Camtasia channel 1 is panned to the left channel as well. But yes you are correct technically every input is mono. The other important bit of information that was glossed over briefly was that normally I would not run the output from the main outs. Any recording that I do from a cheap mixing board is through the inserts to separate channels...eight in the case of Studio B's Delta 1010 interface. Even if only two inputs are being recorded I will still record off the inserts because most of the board circuitry is bypassed which results in a better sound. Even though the Mackie 1642VLZ3 at Studio B has direct outputs the inserts are used due to the circuit bypass. In the How to Record Drums video that's how I had it setup.
@RealHomeRecording
@RealHomeRecording 8 жыл бұрын
+blood lord (Chaotic Sonics) Now if you were referring to my suggestion to use TRS cables over TS that's because TRS = XLR but in phono format. When running a mono signal with a TRS cable you get a balanced signal which inherently has less noise. whirlwindusa.com/support/tech-articles/unbalanced-vs-balanced-lines/

At which point in the video? Faders are kept at 0 dB because that is the optimal signal to noise setting. Volume (technically, input signal) should be set with the preamps. If you absolutely must, use the fader to take away signal level (lower volume) but do not put faders past 0 dB.

You people act as if mixing boards are an out dated form of technology that's no longer in use, at all, currently in the music industry. When in reality sound company's that are significantly experienced, with great notoriety in the live sound reinforcement technology industry, do shows for some very well known majority label artists, all while utilizing the incredibly useful support of a mixing board. Although, I will say, that in most instances more sophisticated, as well as far more technologically enhanced mixing boards are typically implemented than the small mixing board depicted in the video shown above.
@RealHomeRecording
@RealHomeRecording 4 жыл бұрын
No doubt about it. If I had reason to use a larger mixing console I honestly probably wouldn't make a tutorial about it. That should be the job of the companies selling those $50,000 + boards, LOL.

Oops I meant to reply to these other individuals on here with that message, saying smart comments implying that mixing boards are outdated technology that aren't utilized by musicians anymore. I thought your video was really good actually. Honestly a larger board doesn't necessarily mean it's going to add anything more other than more channels, anyway.
