Good video, but I have found it works better to tell people that gain is analogous to sensitivity rather than volume. A short demo of ridiculously high gain where you can hear someone chewing gum across the room helps to drive this idea home, and seems to make better engineers in the end, at least in my experience.

nice, except that the volume fader is not for adjusting if the volume on the performer is to high or low, its the level sent to the master. the volume from the performer is the gain.

and the volume from the singer is not volume. its signal. It needs to be processed before becoming volume.

So much missing information. What is a PFL? (Prefader line) and why would I want to use it? You are explains the high and low shelf but the video is showing a hand tweaking mids at the same time. Panning creates your stereo image. It isn’t just “like” a stereo image it becomes stereo when you pan. I’ve no doubt you know what you’re doing but you need to write a script so that everyone understands you clearly. Particularly with a console like this. If a person doesn’t understand what all the buttons do, it can become extremely frustrating.

I wonder why some people use their analog mixers connecting to computer monitors? Is it just for recording (or) displaying what they do on the mixers on the monitors? I can't think about it. Thanks.

How would you use a mixer in a DAW?
@Hue_Nery4 жыл бұрын
You need a mixer that is also an interface. Many mixers with USB out only output two channels. Namely the stereo bus or main bus. Yamaha/Strindberg have mixers which allow for multiple simultaneous recording. In reality, a mixer isn’t really necessary with a DAW since most don’t act as control surfaces as well as interfaces. Depending on how many inputs you need simultaneously a 2-8 input interface will be much more affordable. If you still have FireWire with a removable chipset, look for a used Mackie Onyx board. The 16 i will allow you to fold back channels to your Mixer so you can mix analogue and record your mix back to two channels in your DAW. Otherwise a simple interface works just fine and often will allow for all the routing available in many mixers. Even allowing for hardware sends and inserts. The more money you spend of course, the better.

This A&H board sounds great, is quite usable, and is highly affordable. I've got one and love it. A 24-channel digital board is probably going to sound great too, but it won't be anywhere near as affordable as this analog thingie, at least not in the near future. Keep in mind also that even the most expensive digital mixing board is going to need analog microphone preamps ahead of its A-D converters. Your voice and ears, mate, are still going to remain entirely analog.
@danpreston5646 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. You said plug the microphone in and set the level without telling them how to set the level. A little explanation of the correct use of the PFL to set the gain correctly would have been a useful addition to this video.
@michaelsoweto47446 жыл бұрын
Especially since that's the primary purpose of PFL in the first place.
@danpreston5646 жыл бұрын
michael soweto I played a gig last month where I ran my mixer as a sub mix into the house mixer. The sound guy at the venue didn’t know how to use PFL to set levels. I was horrified.
@michaelsoweto47446 жыл бұрын
I've been a sound engineer for 30 years, and I can't tell you how many house sound peeps I've had to school - many of which have supposedly had formal training (those can be the worst). So, let me just say in defense of some of them, that setting proper gain structure can be tricky, especially if you're in a small venue. Trim is subjective, and sometimes you simply cannot rely on PFL to set input levels and end up having ample headroom to create a proper mix. So, there is a time and place for gain structure rules to be honored or ignored (mostly). In these cases, it's all about getting the most gain you that you NEED, without overdriving the channel. In a perfect world, when we run line levels into a board, we can go by the "unity gain" rule, because all line levels (by default) are at zero db within the chain anyway... and in this case, there really isn't much need to use PFL to get the right input level because input trim would be set on the sub mixer anyway. In these cases, I simply find peak, and reduce gain on each input equally in order to maximize headroom. This may "look" incorrect at face value to someone who isn't familiar with the the venue, and I've had sound engineers try to call me out based on their visual observations, but the proof is in the pudding... and they always concede that "it looks wrong, but it sounds spectacular". And THAT is what's important, right?
