How to Use an External Microphone on Android Phone with 3.5mm Headphone Jack

Recording audio from an external microphone on an Android phone should be an easy thing to do but many people have found that it is not as simple as it seems and using a 3.5mm microphone. The only place you can plug in a microphone is in this headphone jack. I’ll need an adapter cable like the one from StarTec which splits the audio connections to and from the phone into separate jacks.
With this adapter, you can use any 3.5mm microphone with your Android device including lavalier microphones. You can even plug in a set of headphones in the other side of the adapter to monitor audio as well. I hope this video answered some of your questions about using an external microphone on your Android phone.

You're welcome! They don't make it easy to know how to connect a mic to a smartphone even though the 3.5mm port is a multi-function port. You can also use the TRRS cable on iPhones as well. On iPhone 7 or later the Lightning to 3.5mm cable is also required.

An additional issue is the original camera software that comes stock on your phone might not be recognizing the external mic. I had to download a 3rd party camera app that gives the option to choose what mic to use.

Yeah, that could be an issue at times. Occasionally the mic isn't recognized by the phone so I disconnect everything then reconnect and the phone will recognize the mic. Sometimes I have to plug in a set of earbuds into he headphone port on the TRRS connector for the mic to work.

The TRRS adapter will work for sure. A bit after I made this video I realized that not all camera apps that come preinstalled on Android phone work with external mics during video recording. But here’s a solution in case that happens... try the free Open Camera app on the Google Play store. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks for your question! The thing to know about recording on a smartphone is that you won't necessarily be able to hear what you're recording as you're recording it. It is totally a function of the recording app that you're using. I'm sure some will let you monitor the audio that is coming into the phone while you're recording but I think that most do not. However, when you have both the mic and headphone plugged into the adapter, you will be able to playback and hear your audio after you've stopped recording. I don't know which apps will allow you to monitor audio during recording. You'll just have to read the details on different apps. I have seen one video recording app on iOS that allows audio monitoring during recording but I know that doesn't help you out. I'm sure there are some available for Android. Hope I understood your question correctly!

Yeah it would be easier if the phone could detect the mic on it's own. But the problem is that they built the additional contact point inside the 3.5mm port which is what allows the phone to detect the mic input. But this problem isn't just limited to cell phones, many laptops only have one 3.5mm port now and you will have to use a TRRS adapter cable on those devices too if you want to connect an external mic.

Microphones have a much lower output level, couple of 10 millivolts. Other devices have line levels, can be almost 1v. This will cause overload, distortion.

I’m glad you enjoyed the video! One thing to watch out for is that some Android phones can’t record audio from an external mic. I didn’t know this awhile back. The issue is the camera software/app. I think it’s mostly fixed now but I’ve seen in more than one Android phone where it didn’t work. However on my Google Pixel it was fixed when they released the updated camera software on the Pixel 3. But the TRRS plug is definitely what you will need!

Yes you should be able to record video while capturing audio with the external microphone. However I recently discovered that on Android phones not all the video recording apps support external mic audio. You might need an update to the app or a 3rd party video app. For example, on my Google Pixel 1 I couldn't use the external mic with video recording until they updated the app to version 6.1 I think. But this works with all Apple phones. The TRRS adapter is definitely the key gadget to make this work.

How about plugging the headphone output on my pc soundcard into the mic plug (as show)? Will the (relatively) high volume and electricity(?) create problems for the phone/recording?

That recording app is called Voice Recorder I think. I don't have that phone on me right now. But it is an app that is included with the phone. On my phone, it was in a Utilities folder with a few other apps that were installed by the manufacturer. You should have a basic recording app on your phone too! Hope this helps!

U can use the normal microphone that come with the phone to record clear voices with that adapter or not ? Do we need to buy microphone

If your earbuds have a microphone on it then you can just use that to record your voice on the Android phone.

Very clear! I just ordered a boya m1 mic to used on my android. I just check the plugging head and it has 4 shaft, that mean I can use it with phone without any adapter

With this you can’t monitor live audio while you’re recording. You will have to stop recording and play it back to hear. One thing I need to let you know. This does not work on all Android phones during video recording. It all depends on the camera app you’re using. If your built-in app doesn’t work you should try downloading a free one to use. One that might work for Android is called Open Camera. Hope this helps!
