Hallo. Nice review. Just bought Sony rx10 vi. So I ordered this shoot. But should the camera stay in bulb and manuel mode single shoot? Sorry I am noob 🙂
@mikesphotography3 жыл бұрын
No worries. It all depends on how you use it, and what you use it for. Keep the camera in single shot. If you are doing long exposures, you can either just use the lock button and keep it in bulb mode or set the exposure time on the intervalometer and let it run through the time you have set. For timelapses, you can set the exposure time in camera and just make sure the interval time is a bit longer than the exposure time...or you can keep it in bulb mode and set both the interval time and the exposure time in the intervalometer. I hope that helps. 😁👍

Hi, I have sony a7iii. Can I use this intervalometer for video shuttering?

I need your help. I have a phottix intervalometer that has two additional options: “repeat” and “N2”. N1 won’t let me zero out and I can’t tell what everything is doing. Sometimes I’ll set it up and every other frame is really dark. Not sure why but I can’t find anywhere online (including the user Manuel) on what this does. Hellppppp pleaseeee
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Ok no worries. Do you use the long function to get your exposure or do you set the exposure time in camera? When you get a dark exposure the buffer still might be unloading as the intervalometer wants to take the second shot, giving you one normal exposure and then the next dark. This is sometimes due to the interval being too fast for the length of exposure or the sd card being too slow for the interval time. The repeat and N2 functions are annoying. With that intervalometer, I’d set the N1 to 999 or the highest figure it will go. Make sure you give the camera enough time to unload each image to the card by setting the interval to the appropriate time. If I’m shooting with a 1 second interval, I’ll make sure I’m using a U3 SDXC card with at least a 95MB/s transfer rate. If I’m doing a long exposure timelapse, I’ll extend the interval. For a 20-30 second exposure, I’ll give the camera at least a 3 second interval to clear the buffer. With the really long exposures, I’ll set the exposure time on the intervalometer under “long”. If I’m doing short exposures under 1 second, I’ll set the exposure on the camera and then set the interval as my exposure plus the interval time. Does that make sense?
@DanielsimsSteiner6 жыл бұрын
Mike Smith Thank you for being so helpful. I’m shooting on the A7iii, and I typically do night time lapses, so I set exposures of about 30 seconds and I do that on my intervalometer (with the camera in BULB). I keep NR on, so I never do an interval shorter than 30 seconds and I know my SD card is up to the job. I’ve gotten it to work really well for me a handful of times but I always feel like I’m guessing what I’m doing. I’m still not sure exactly what the N2 does or what the repeat function is. Is it possible that the N2 is causing the dark frames?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
So with long exposure NR on, this will make your camera process each image by the same length of time as your exposure. This is where the dark frames are happening I think. So the intervalometer takes one exposure waits for your interval time and then clicks for a second exposure. During the interval and the second exposure, your camera is process the image for NR which takes 30seconds. Once that finishes, the camera then notices the intervalometer telling it that the shutter should be open, but there’s only a few seconds left on the intervalometer and the camera will open for those few seconds. Then for the third shot it will fire as normal and start the whole process again. I think you’ll eliminate the dark frame problem if you turn off long exposure NR and then reduce the noise in post production. As for N2 and repeat...I’m not sure exactly what they do. I ignore them and just keep the n1 to 999...I typically shoot about 300 exposures so this is well within that limit. 👍
@DanielsimsSteiner6 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh I’ll try it out. Thank you so much. I seriously love your channel. Keep it up!

What do you set the camera on are does this override the camera settings?
@mikesphotography2 жыл бұрын
If you have it set to bulb mode, this will tell the camera when to open and close the shutter. If it is in any of the other modes, the camera will open the shutter when it is told, but shut it once the exposure time has been completed. So when you set the exposure time on the intervalometer, set the camera to bulb mode ... when you just use the timelapse interval function without the exposure time set on the intervalometer, set the shutter speed in the camera. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi Mike, thank you for very informative video. Quick question. IF my sont a6500 was on burst mode (HI+), and the "long" setting on the intervalometer was set to 4 seconds, does this mean that the camera takes the picture in the burst mode for 4 seconds? Or does setting "long" to 4 merely sets the shutter speed to 4 seconds?
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
Good question Tomo. The long mode will keep the shutter pressed for 4 seconds so it will fire off as many shots as the shutterspeed and the buffer will allow in that four seconds.
@mikesphotography5 жыл бұрын
The way to get a 4 second exposure is to set the shutterspeed in manual mode to bulb. 👍
@annedouc5 жыл бұрын
@@mikesphotography Thanks for your response. Actually, what I want to do is to shoot in burst mode for certain number of seconds (long) at an interval (intvl) a number of times (n) at a very high shutter speed (1/1000sec). The value setted for "long" in the intervalometer, will override the exposure value setted in the camera?

It won't override it, it'll just add to the overall interval time. If I'm shooting a time-lapse with an exposure under 30 seconds, I'll set the exposure time in camera, anything over that, I'll put the camera on bulb mode and use the long function. Thanks for watching. 👍

For some reason I can't seem to get it to just take a sequence without it doing some kind of delay somewhere when it repeats the N1 series of photos. I dont like how it works. N1 only goes Up to 99 then you have to use N2 to repeat the N1 sequence over and over. There is no infinite like on yours. I'm bailing out of this one and getting the one you have. Hey Xavi, No worries, I hope it helped! In theory you should be able to do it. You’d have to keep the shutter button half pressed to keep the focus tracking in between taking photos. Also you’d need a good wireless intervalometer and not the IR remote. Sounds like it would be a good challenge though. Let me know how you get on. 👍

Thanks for the quick reply! I was thinking of the Pixel TW 282 or 283. And that's what I meant, do I have to then keep the shutter button half pressed of the intervalometer? I know if I'd take photos to someone else I would half press the button in the camera, but in my case I would be the one walking towards the camera and the one taking the photo. Does it make any sense at all?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense, you would have to keep it half pressed for the focus to track you which might be a bit tricky. There is the pre-AF setting, but this does hunt a little. Pressing and holding it might work...if you set it to a slower drive mode so it doesn’t fill the buffer too quickly. Then you could click the hold button, quickly put it in your pocket, and then walk.... I think it would be a case of seeing what works by trial and error...until you found what does work.... Does that make sense?

I’ve got the pixel 283 and it is a good intervalometer....I would try it but I can’t find the connecting cable at the mo...🤦🏻♂️ With the wired intervalometer, it does track focus in AF-C but I have to have the shutter half pressed.

Hi Mike. I was wondering if this intervalometer would work with the SOny Rx100 v? And also do you know any other intervalometer that my work, especially if it can do Hollygrails?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Urroz, I have the rx100ii and it works fine with that as well as the rx10iii, so I think it should do. I’m not sure of one that would help with the holy grail but I think there are more computer based intervalometers that would shoot from day to night....or LRtimelapse.

Quite a few articles mentioned the interval time must be at least one sec longer than the exposure time. They are referring to in camera time lapse setting. Eg, if the exposure is 30s, set the interval to 31s and not 1s. By setting interval to 31s, the interval is actually 1s and not 31s. I don't know why manufacturer make it so confusing. However, you said the interval can set any where bet 1s to 30s. This is confusing. Do intervalometer work differently? Can you address this pls. Tks
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
So with this intervalometer, when you set the exposure time in the intervalometer, it counts that down and then switches to the interval time and counts that down. So in this case you set the times individually of eachother. If you have your camera taking photos independently of the intervalometer, you need to set the intervalometer to your exposure time plus your interval time. I hope that makes sense. 👍

@@mikesphotography Tks for clarification. So intervalometer works differently fr in cam time lapse.

Hi Mike....I am new to Astrophotography.. I have two questions 1. My A7iii intervalometer jack is very fragile...Is there any possibility of an intervalometer with Usb c port? 2.How do I turn off both display screen and evf during timelapses?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashish, Good to have you as part of the growing astrophotography community! It's great fun isn't it!! 1. I haven't seen any intervalometers using the USB-C port so I don't think that is an option at the moment. The multiport does seem very fragile. 2. I tend to just switch it to EVF and leave it during time lapses. The batteries are good enough and I've never had an issue with the battery running out mid lapse. Thanks

I own a PIXEL tw 283 s2 which uses the USB port of the a7iii and is also compatible with other camera brands provided you get the shutter cable for that brand. I belief this can help

I got to the bottom of this Mike. With one of my cameras the 700D the noise reduction was on and this was the problem. With the other 6D Mk2 it wass recommended to increase the interval to be the exposure plus a secon and that solved that one.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Ah...of course...the long exposure noise reduction is one of those annoying functions that is on as standard and will really mess with your long exposure timelapses. Interesting with the 6Dii as well...I wonder what is causing that to happen...but good to hear you've found a work around. 😁👍

I have 2 of these and really want to get one working for tomorrow nights clear skies. I am setting 0 x delay 1 min exposure, 8 seconds interval and 50 exposures. On 2 different Shoot intervalometers and 2 different cameras I am getting random length exposures and I have no idea why.
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, That is strange, I've never had an issue with the exposure time. What settings do you have in your camera? And what is the variance in your exposure times?

How do you switch the intervalometer off?
@mikesphotography4 жыл бұрын
The only way to do that is to take the batteries out. I wish they had a mechanical on/off switch on these accessories. The draw is so low on them that the batteries do last for ages...I think I've had a set of batteries in mine for a good few months and they're still going strong. THanks for watching 😁👍

How can I set exposure of 0.5 seconds in intervalometer
@Pratyush18126 жыл бұрын
The minimum setting is of 1 second, how should I do it then?
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean an interval of 0.5 seconds or an exposure of 0.5 seconds? To have an exposure of 0.5 seconds, you set it in the camera, but your interval can only be a maximum of 1 per second. I only use the intervalometer as a shutter release when I’m doing exposures longer than 5 seconds. I hope that helps. 👍

Mike, Mine is a Newer the same as yours BUT it seems to be stuck on delay of 98. I can't seem to get it to zero out? Help!
@mikesphotography3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jody, Can you get the numbers flashing by pressing and holding down set? Also does your unit have an L in the bottom left hand corner of the screen? If so you need to press and hold the lock/illumination button on the left hand side... I did have one where the dpad stopped working and this meant I couldn't change any of the figures on it.

In s&q settings you can shoot timelapse by choosing 1fps
@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
That is true which is great for a quick timelapse grab. However, if you want to get a really high quality timelapse with a good dynamic range, shooting a sequence of raw photographs is a much better way of capturing a timelapse. For me, the extended workflow time is worth the increase in quality.

@mikesphotography6 жыл бұрын
Definitely!! That’s one really annoying thing with this camera. I wish the shutter would close down when removing the lens like on the canon eos R. I have a small lens blower which gets most of it off and I also have a sensor cleaning kit with me at all times. I do get nervous when cleaning it though.

Maybe because you post is 2 yrs old, but the a7iii HAS built-in interval shooting. Isn’t that a intervalometer? With all the other settings, this feature is amazing & something mirrored cameras do not possess. (Unless there is a recent change)

It’s under shoot mode/drive 2 screen 4/14, 2nd line, press enter, then you have 2 pages of settings.
