In this video, I will show you the pros and cons of Apple CarPlay. Traditional navigation is dead and you shouldn't overpay for it. Watch this video to find out how to use all of the apps. You can make calls, text, and even set a destination hands free by using Siri. Apple Car Play isn't distracting and allows you to use certain audio and visual apps. I use Waze in my 2020 Honda Ridgeline and love it. The maps are more up to date and it tells me where the red light cameras are and if I am going over the speed limit.

Waze does work with Apple Carplay but uses phone data plan. You have remember to turn off Waze after exiting the car as it will continue to use data plan to track your location. If you go out off your home phone plan zone it can get expensive with overage charges, that is where I would uses Navigation when traveling and stick to main highway and roads if Navigation is not up to date.

There is still one advantage to navigation in your car. It does not rely on a cellular data connection to work which means if you go somewhere remote your navigation is still useful. Most iphone nav apps require data to work, in fact I only know of one that allows you to permanently download map areas in advance. That said I do think Apple Carplay or Android Auto are both useful and I plan to update my 2016 Taurus USB hub this week so I can use CarPlay with Sync 3. Interestingly Sync 3 does work with Waze now but I still think having the ability to use apps that are not Sync compatible will be an advantage.

I've got a 2014 Honda Accord Touring. Can my car get an aftermarket component put in? And, are you able to put the map on the carplay in 3D? I hate 2D. The stock navigation unit in my car allows the map to be viewed in 3D. I'm seriously considering buying an aftermarket unit if my car is compatible with it!

Thanks. Just bought a 2021 CRV XL and so wish you had a video on the Apple CarPlay, and how to navigate between various music situations when you are using navigation. I so get lost, need to see my navigator and still listen to music, frequently I’m seeing the radio button screen and only listening to the navigation that’s not good for me. PLEASE show how to navigate through these screens source, main, ETC so I hint get lost in the multitude of screens and settings and not seeing what I need to. Honda needs to hire you to develop the car manual in YT, the manual many times is useless, when trying to find something in the index. But right now I need the Ins and outs of the using the built in screen and it’s functions for the 2021 CRV XL I just subscribed so hope to see that in the near future. HH

I have a pioneer nav unit in my truck and I love it. Even if I have to update it every few years I’d sooner do that for $50 than to chew through my data on my phone. Much cheaper. I still like the car play but will always chose the nav.. it’s free.

Peter Rothfuss I understand what your saying and I’m not sure where u live but here in Canada unlimited data costs huge money for my phone. My Pioneer nav unit has been in my truck since 2010 and never been updated and still gets me where I need to go. So as far as a back up CarPlay is ok... but I’ll still take the nav it’s still free.

Is there anyway to fix the volume on Carplay? For instance I feel like I have to have the volume at it's max to hear the voice of a person I'm on a call with. If I don't turn that down before my call ends and I get an incoming call it's crazy loud. This is the biggest gripe that I have about Carplay. Any fix???

The area where the integrated Garmin in our Kenwood stereo was a great benefit, was when we had to use navigation in a place where we could not get a phone signal. That happens often for us. The stereo also uses Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but Garmin uses a satellite and does not depend on a cell phone tower.

Google Maps has the option to download the maps offline. It doesn't matter you are outside cell coverage. You have the maps and works like a regular navigation system without cellphone coverage

Hi Philip, I just purchased a 2018 Nissan Leaf and I notice that blutooth audio works very well Pandora, TIDAL etc... but when using any music app through Apple CarPlay it contionusly stutters. Very frustrating, any ideas? I'm new to CarPlay but not to the iPhone. Is this a known problem? I'm hoping there is a simple solution, audio is a big deal for me and if I can't get audio working then CarPlay is pretty much worthless to me. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

It, too, states that Google Maps and Waze can be used, but this person found after much research that Google Maps and Waze don't work as well as Apple Maps with Apple Car play. Just purchased a 2018 Nissan Sentra SL. I believe that is the last model year that Nissan will have CD players and navigation. So, in 5-6 years when it's time for a new car, I'll be going Versa or whatever the cheapest model is. If I don't need a CD player and navigation, then I don't need heated seats, adaptive cruise either.

It is now Oct 2020. The latest Honda Accord uses NFC (you know, the technology where you tap your cell phone to pay at a store) to do Apple Carplay and Android Auto. However, Hyundai still uses USB ports and cables! Wonder why! All these cars need to go the Tesla route. A Tesla connects to cell towers constantly, and also WiFi when available. So the maps on its big 15" screen are updated constantly. However, you need to pay $10 a month after the fist year in order to get live traffic updates such as about accidents, traffic jams etc. Last weekend we were traveling in the mountains of North Carolina in our Tesla. By the way, the Tesla is just amazing on mountain roads, going up and down hills stress free! :) The Tesla map did not cut off navigation even though cell signal was absent in many area, because I think it downloads the planned route ahead of time.

Waze is an option on mine. Just don’t get KZbin. But I can get KZbin music to stream but just can see the videos. It would be nice if you could use KZbin functions while parked or Netflix if you’re waiting for someone or something to open and then features would unlock when the car isn’t in drive mode.

definitely skip navi. I just bought a car and got the navi because to get the larger 12.3 inch display you have to get navigation with it. Lexus navigation is bad compared to google maps

I do like Apple Car Play, or for that matter Android Auto, and I agree with your video completely. I do think there's some room for improvement however. I wish that either of the major "Car Play" interfaces also displayed turn instruction on cars with both a center display and a H.U.D. I've not yet seen either system be able to leverage the Head Up Display, only the center main display. For that reason I'm still sometimes partial to my built-in GPS.

This was a very well done video and I really appreciate the information. I was attempting to figure out if I might be able to get by in terms of Navigation by just using Apple CarPlay instead of springing for the Honda CR-V Touring with Onboard Navigation. I was wondering if I would be able to get by and be satisfied with just the Navigation from Apple CarPlay. You answered this question very specifically and I appreciate that. Not to go into too much detail, but I was miffed when Honda did away with the EX-L Navi versions of their vehicles. I think this is rather greedy on their part. In any case after some research, I think I might be satisfied by getting a CR-V EX-L and then using the supplied Apple Car Play and maps for my navigation. You see I've had a 2018 Toyota Camry XLE V6 for almost a year and a half. I was forced to use the supplied Scout GPS Link app for navigation. They did NOT add Apple CarPlay to the Accord until the 2019 model ! Prior to this I had onboard Navigation on my previous three vehicles. The Scout GPS didn't work well, to say the least, at first, but to their credit they did make improvements and it now works rather well. Being familiar with Navigation by APP, I should be able to adapt to same with the Honda CR-V EX-L. Some people may still want onboard Nav. In any case and again, very nice review and thanks for addressing exactly what I was trying to determine. As you know, being a salesman, an EX-L goes for considerably less than does the CR-V Touring.

Apple Car Play Maps app vs portable Garmin GPS. 2 Fridays ago on our way to Madison NJ, I had preset the 2 devices to the house in Madison. Just before the Susquehana River Bridge, the Maps app said I could save 33 minutes by exiting just after the MD tollbooth in 2 miles (the Delaware Bridge on Fridaya can have a miles long backup to get onto the bridge.) Decided instantly to trust Maps: exited I95 and cane to a stop sign. Apple Maps said turn right, while the Garmin said turn left presumably to get back onto I95. We were in no hurry and wended our way into PA, and eventually to the PA turnpike - which runs into the NJ turnpike near Philadelphia. We arrived at our destination without anymore deviations. The point I am trying to make is that Apple Maps reacted much quicker to traffic changes. What I also saved is my sanity since I don't do traffic tie-ups nicely.

So as I understand the idea behind car play is to use the iPhone as the navigation device instead of having a dedicated on board nav system .. But when traveling abroad and driving a rental car then most Apple nav apps will require an internet service to start driver guidance and that means having to buy a SIM card for every country I have to drive through as is the case in Europe . My rental at the moment is a Volvo XC60 and it’s got both car play as well as onboard navigation on a great center console touch screen . I think it is important to have a nav system in a car at least as a back to the iPhone navigation especially when going through an area where there is no service coverage .

Can you still use your iPhone to do other activities while the navigation is simultaneously running on your car's stereo screen? From what I can see from the 2019 Nissan line up, the Versa S has the same radio as the Sentra SL. Given that we are now going to be using our smart phones for Navigation, I'm not seeing buying anything more than the cheapest car they sell.

I believe the 2019 Versa S doesn’t have Apple car play available. You’d have to get any versa trim above the S. I know this is true for the 2019 Sentras.

I personally prefer the onboard navigation on my F150. When I punch in an address on my onboard nav, once I plug in my phone, it automatically switches to Apple maps. I hate this. How do I turn off this feature while still being able to listen to my music and use the other Carplay features. I drive in some areas where I will loose my cell signal, so the onboard nav is essential.

map apps use internet to download map data so no. However, google maps allows you to download maps so if you plan your trip ahead you would still be able to search addresses and use the directions.

Actually, after additional research, I have discovered on the Apple website that iPods are NOT supported by Apple Car Play. Apple Car Play in BMWs is now wireless, connected via wifi, so my iPOD which is connected via USB would continue to work, although it will probably be better to ditch the iPod, unless the USB music from the iPod would be better quality than from my Car Play iPhone.

There is offline and online navigation. You are looking for an offline navigation app like TomTom.

So...why can’t I hear any voice navigation when using CarPlay. On both Apple Maps and Waze, the voice navigation is super low if I’m listening to the radio or a podcast. Any solutions? I’ve tried the sounds and haptics on settings on my phone, but it still doesn’t turn the voice up. I’ve turned off the volume with speed as well and still can’t hear a voice during navigation.

Next time Siri is giving you directions, turn the volume up until you can hear her clearly. As long as you do it while she’s giving you directions, it will only turn up Siri’s voice and leave the music volume where it was set

I just use the car navigation so i dont burn through data on my phone using navigation with apple car play. Olus hate having my phone plugged in to just use it

My 2019 BMW has wireless Apple Car Play. Much better than having to connect with a wire. This is so old school!

Garmin detail is much better. i have a 2017 accord with nav. lots more info. plus what about telling us how to use and features of android auto? not everybody likes or wants to waste money buying an over priced i phone

I currently own a 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 equipped with the factory Multimedia Package which includes the Command GPS Navigation. It is complicated and has a very steep learning curve. The individual owner’s manual on the Command GPS is a 1/2” thick and I still have not learned all of its functions and features. So when I ordered my new 2018 Mercedes-Benz C300, I decided not to order the Multimedia Package/Command System this time due to its complexity. So I ordered the available Apple Carplay instead. When connected, my iPhone’s interface in perfectly integrated into the display monitor and is operated by the dial knob on the console. I can make phone calls via dial knob/interface or voice command. The Apple Carplay is user-friendly and so much easier to learn. The available GPS apps like Sygic and Waze are now Carplay compatible and displays very sharp and clear on the display and their updates are free. 👍 The Mercedes-Benz Command GPS Navigation updates are dealer installed and cost $300. 👎
