Join the Army National Guard in 1975. 11B. Had an M16a1 for the next 25 years. Nose to Charging handle works every time With iron sights. Consistent cheek weld, and eye relief. every time!

Nose to charging handle is correct!...that is exactly how the Army taught me on the M16A1. It's up to yourself, the shooter, to make darn sure that the charging handle is locked in place while nose is on it. I've seen what happens otherwise, not pretty!..Great video Midway!!!

Fact: the distance of eye to the rear sight aperture will change as the shooter’s position gets higher or lower if the shooter has a muscularly relaxed stock weld, resting the entire weight of the head on the stock. And it is from this condition that sight alignment can be best anchored, not from adjustment of the body to get the nose onto the charging handle. My opinion is based on my own success with shooting leading me to earn the US Distinguished Rifleman Badge and as a CMP-USAMU Military Rifle Instructor. So forget the nose to charging handle litany and accept the size of the aperture to front sight relationship which yields the most comfort, since such a relationship supports better accuracy no matter the apparent diameter of the sight picture.

You’re representing a different subject. While yes you make a similar point - regarding head alignment akin to “eye box” for a scope, Henry was illustrating a consistent placement front to back; a reference point on the rifle to obtain the same head placement, every time. Other instructors have beginners tape an ear plug on the stock as a reference point. Neither of you are wrong; rather, you discuss separate components of an essential marksmanship skill. Consistency.

Man, the good old M16 has a special place in my heart. Don't know if you know the game Operation Flashpoint but man, did I enjoy the heck out of this gun in that game. Now, as I am an adult, I have become a sport shooter (I am from Germany) and shot a few AR15s myself. The whole AR15/M4/M16 series rifles are just wow. Love it. Great video as always man, just pure information! Loving it!

Consistency of positioning. What a great habit to drill into yourself! It seems like keeping that exact same position - then adjusting a scope or red dot to fit it would be a really smart thing to do. With a scope especially - setting the scope forward or back so that the correct eye relief is for "nose to charging handle". Since regular red dots can be as far forward as you want - it would already be ok, and the consistent positioning would only serve to more quickly aquire the dot every time. ...... I'm going to go check my rifles now and see how close to that they are.

Other people have done it, but I'd like to see a detailed zero explanation from Henry on the A2. In-range and Mrgunsandgear go over it similarly. I'm curious if there's a contrast between that way and mil doctrine.

Interesting technique. Will try it with my Windham MPC AR next range day. Can't use it on the KelTec RDB because it doesn't have an AR-style charging handle.. But I do have an AR/M16 style carry handle on it so maybe I can adapt the technique

@charlesludwig9173

The as issued iron sights have a range finding and bullet drop compensation function whereby the front sight has apparent width of the E Type Target at 170 meters thus if this target appeared to be 1/3rd width of the front sight that target would be at about 500 meters from the shooter’s position and the shooter would need to adjust rear sight’s elevation wheel from the 300 meter position to the 500 meter mark.

Depends on height over bore of the rifle. The barrel on an AR is almost directly in line with your shoulder, so your line of sight is significantly higher. Look at the carry handle or tall scope base on any AR, then compare that to scope ring height for a typical bolt action or iron sight height over bore for a lever action or a shotgun.

Question.....do you shoot M16 A2 with both eyes open...?..😮
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 6 ай бұрын
You should keep both eyes open but not just for situational awareness. Both eyes open supports muscular relaxation of face and eyes and when muscular relaxation is achieved, no matter the position, the shooter will be able to define proper natural point of aim adjustment to make recoil resistance consistent. And this is what causes bullets to go where aimed. Most shooters never realize Princess and the Pea sensitivity for exacting natural point of aim adjustment but it’s what separates champion long range shooters from other competitors. It’s literally The Secret to winning.

Yep, I know the technique, but I never liked it. My hold was always just back of the charger. I used both the A1 and A2, (service support) rarely got the later M4 series. I always qualified expert, at most dropping two out of a clean run on both KD (know distance) and UKD (unknown distance) targets out to 430-meters. Usually, the lost targets were due to a scorer who wasn't paying attention to target splash when the range officer would lock a selected set of targets to see if anyone was mis scoring.

You are right, the nose to charging handle relationship is incidental at best and only applicable from a prone position.
