How to use AutoFill & Flash Fill in Excel - Tips for Beginners

You've probably noticed a typo in the flash fill example on the phone number. I wrote 2475 at the end of the first number and it should have been 7890. Flash fill couldn't recognize the pattern and when I copied it down, it kept the 2475 at the end and didn't notice 😳 I've updated the practice sheet so it is correct. Sorry about any confusion.

Clear video, my compliments. However, if I use the keyboard shortcut ctrl + E in my Excel 2019, Excel will read the cell in question. When I add flashfill to the quick access toolbar and stand on the icon it shows the shortcut Ctrl + E. But it does not work. Do you have a solution for this problem?

Thanks for the tips on flash fill. What if I want to add a prefix like mailto: before email addresses in the same column. How do I flash fill the entire column?

Thank you for this video. It's super helpful. Expanding on what Flash Fill can do, is it possible to have Excel auto-fill two cells? For example, I have three separate cells (A,B,C). In "A," I have FULL NAMES; in "B," First Names; and in "C," Last names only. But I really don't want to do CTRL+E every single time, especially if there's a change to a single name down the line. I would like to have it where I can type the Full Name on "A" and it auto detect and Fills-In B and C with First and Last on the assing cell. Do you know if this is too much for excel? Am I just dreaming...

Hello Jamie. I like your way of teaching. Thanks for your lessons. I have a question though. In the flashfill, the phone numbers are incorrect as the last 4 digits are repeated in the rows after Flashfill.

@@TeachersTechoh! i tried it now. that won't be necessary i guess. as you have entered the last 4 digits 2475 in the first row, which is not in the data. thats's the reason it showed the error. when i tried to enter the first row correctly. the rest are coming in line.

I've watched so many videos on flash fill and I'm currently taking a course at my local library on Excel. Everybody is telling me that you only have to type in the first thing of a list, however it only seems to work for me if I type in the first two. Is this because of an update that happened? I was also told that if you type directly into a cell the second thing in a list should start to appear after typing the first couple of letters, but that never seems to work for me.

I had a typo on the first line and didn't notice. The first number needed to be corrected; the last four digits didn't match, so it couldn't find the pattern.

I wrote the wrong phone number on the first line and it didn't match. On the practice file I had 2475 at the end, should have been 7890. Just make the change on the sheet and it should work.
