HOW TO USE BLACK 3.0 by Stuart Semple

Use a nice soft brush (not a rubbish scratchy comblike one)
Apply at room temperature 10 - 25 c ( 50 - 77 F)
Use as little paint as possible and spread it out nicely
Allow to dry between coats (at least two hours, overnight is better)
Use a hairdryer to get max blackness
Seal absorbent (porous) things with 25% PVA and 75% Water
Prime shiny (non - absorbent) things with primer or Black 2.0

I just saw on reddit an article about this and Stuart and Anish Kapoor, I’m now fascinated (obsessed) and intrigued and it’s in my a cart right now on color hustle, and I’m not even a real painter or artist. This is so amazing, and I respect Stuart SO much for creating this because Anish got exclusive access to Vanta Black (which is so stupid, he didn’t have anything to do with its creation so I find it gross he got it and wouldn’t “share”). This is affordable and so neat and has so many applications

It's an industrial paint. Why shouldn't Kapoor buy it, he's perfectly in his rights to do so. Semple has turned his vendetta against a hard working artist into a marketing campaign, and you have simply fallen for it. Black 3.0 is shit. He has put too much pigment in it and you can literally smear it off with your finger. He has even released KZbin adverts telling people how to "not mess up" when using it. He uses character assassination to make money and that's despicable.

I have just used Black v 3.0 to coat the interior surfaces of a very deep lens hood I have made for my digital infrared camera. Amazing material. Makes matt black primer look light grey in comparison. I am so glad you have developed this material for the use of civilian artists. Thank you!

You can paint a layer of black 3.0 in between your base coat and top coat like a color coat; I know many airbrush and detail artists use acrylic paints for their nail art work, so same difference. I'm so excited! I just got my first purchase of black 3.0 (and "mirror") delivered today! One thing concerns me though.... I shook the black 3.0 pretty well ...a little more than I normally would shake enamels and acrylics, simply because I have no idea how long it had been sitting, if stuff had settled a lot, or the nature of the paint, etc. ...and the bottle does say shake well. When I go to squirt some into a little thimble-sized container for use with my brush, it came out very "gloopy" and thick, with a small portion of it being somewhat watery. I thought, "okay, it's obviously a thick paint, and I just didn't shake it well enough". So I turned a paintbrush around backwards, stuck it in and stirred the living snot out of it. It's still extremely gloopy like a lot of thick lumps, and no amount of stirring or shaking seems to make a difference. They're not hard lumps of paint the consistency of the gloopy lumpy stuff is about like mayonnaise or jelly, but it is certainly much much thicker than what I'm seeing spread by brush in this video. What are the chances this has somehow been exposed to too high or too low temperatures, or is it bad batch, or whatever? It's so frustrating because I want to use it right now but I'm afraid if it is a bad batch that I'll have to send it back and I can't use any of it.... Is this a known problem? Have I just not shaken or stirred enough? Any help is appreciated.

sounds like it may have froze in shipping, ive had other paints do this. mix it extremely well in a blender bottle or magic bullet, them let sit in warm (atleast 75 degree f) room for a hour. this has worked for me with other frozen paints

@@teslacoil4335 yeah thanks for that. I'll give it a shot. I know he specifically clarifies that temperature is very important for when it's applied, and I think he even said for storage. Considering that this is not your regular ol average paint, I didn't know if it would be permanently affected by exposure to temperatures beyond those ranges. On another note I just discovered today that this is not what I thought it was. I mean I knew it was black 3.0 and it's Stewart simples third "blackest black" attempt and that at one time it was the "blackest paint in the world." (Because vanta black is not really a paint..) What I didn't know is that "musou black" is; A) NOT just another marketing name for "vanta black". B) it has absolutely nothing to do with the arrogant douchebag who is so pathetic he can't share a dang coating color. C) it was actually created after black 3.0, and Stewart simples efforts were it's inspiration! D)

I'm kinda curious for a bit more information here... Notably, I know Black 2 can be thinned with water, but what about 3? I work primarily with miniatures, and have seen a few videos playing with it from the tube, but I'm wondering about established best practices. Can this be thinned with water, or would something more along the lines of an airbrush thinner be more appropriate? Does it play nice with other media and additives, like drying retarder or flow improver? Does it mind living on a wet palette for extended periods? How much of the impact is lost if you varnish over it? Would this be a better or worse base coat for interference paints? So many questions, so much stuff to try, so many years turning in my head...

Hi there. First of all, can't wait to finally put my hands on this paint. It's on its way, so I'm really excited. Secondly: As I'm just about to work on a project, which is painting my guitar with BLK 3.0, I've a very important question: Can you paint using an artistic airbrush, and if so, what is the proper agent to thin it with? Also which varnish should I use afterwards? I mean, of course it's matte finish, but it'd be great if you have any suggestions. Hi! I found this video extremely informative and educational, awesome stuff! One question that I still have is how would you go about putting a protective layer for it? I realize that this isn't common, but should the need arise, do you have any recommendations for protective products to coat Black 3.0 without ruining it ?

There really needs to be a sealer on it because it rubs off on everything even after it is thoroughly dry. It will also reconstitute if it gets wet. (It also does reflect some light, especially when viewed at certain angles, but that's another whole issue.)

I've seen shoes on Reddit painted with it. I do believe it's possible, I just don't know what you'd seal it with. I've never painted shoes, though. Also keep in mind - this stuff is really matte, so I would think you would only want to wear them under super clean situations.

@@vvsbee5694 Probably not viable if you intend to do something with the leather. I do leather sneaker painting and the paints are really specialized. They need to stretch without cracking in a way that you don't see out of standard acrylics.

Don't know if it's even possible...but how do you protect the Black from scratches,chips etc. I'm guessing any normal top coat will lessen the darkness. If there is no normal top coat...are you looking into one ? Thanks, love the products, absolute joy to use them.

Yeah we've been working on it it's hard. So any topcoat out there at the moment isn't as matte as 3.0 so it makes it reflect light and some of them cause weird reactions. If your pice gets scuffed and looks a little shiny, wipe it with alcohol and that restores is. 3.0 is pretty durable but if it gets scuffed can get shiny, the alcohol is a good fix. Hopefully one day we will nail that topcoat

Yeah it's fine loads of people do it. BUT a few points, you thin with water... and you want a really thin light coat and leave it to dry for a long time before you re-coat. It's easy with an airbrush to get too much on and then it breaks. In most cases a brush will have easily as a good a finish, it's just if your object is very complex with little nooks and crannies an airbrush can help.

Add a fabric medium like the kind they sell at Joann’s or in the Walmart craft aisle. It turns any acrylic paint into a stretchy wash-proof tshirt that acts just like a screen-print!

US newbie here. I bought some KILLS Premium and had is project piece tinted the blackest color the store had. Obviously, it isn't black enough. I thought If I would use such a dry primer I could stretch out some BLACK-3 so I can order enough BLACK-3 to cover this primed area of about 32 sq feet. What size bottle and how many do I need? I'm starting to make paper mache masks and I am going to be using black 3.0 for two separate masks I'm going to make. One mask I am going to make completely black compleate with black eye mesh so I can wear it with hoods and other things so that it looks like my face disappears in the shadows of the hood. I think that would work well for a nazgul cosplay. The other one I want to do is one with the yellow sign in the center and then painting the rest of the mask with black 3.0 that way the yellow really pops~

hypothetically, if i made a cloth face mask and then painted the outside of the mask with a few layers of black 3.0, would there be any potential health risks associated with that? i'd wait for the paint to completely dry/cure, wouldn't wear it outdoors, and would otherwise follow all the rules and tips stated in this video. i'm just worried that the moisture on my breath might 'rehydrate' the paint and cause me to inhale it, or something else like that. love your work btw, and i'd love to be able to use it in my own. thank you!

It's an acrylic paint which is a polymer. It should not rehydrate under any circumstances.

Hi Stuart, love the motivation for the paint and purchased a bottle. I'm looking to use a paint gun coat a small, cylindrical piece of aluminum by applying a coat of the 2.0, and then 3.0 as suggested in this video. Any recommendations for the ratio of paint/water to get the cleanest coat for a spray gun? My goal is to apply the thinnest, most even coat (using your paint to limit reflections in a science experiment where increasing the thickness can drastically effect the results). I plan on messing around with it to find the best ratio for my application, but it would be great if I had a starting point. Thank you!

I live in Texas and ordered some, and sadly due to the climate every piece of mail I receive arrives very very hot. Will being hot ruin it forever? Or if I wait for it to cool off will it work again. Stuart sent this as I wait for our order of a couple bottles of black 3. My son talk of vanta and that it was used on a car? I’m getting 1 bottle for him and 1 for me. We are not painters, just nerds. 1) any recommendation on a primer for non absorbent items other than black 2? We didn’t order that. 2) Any advice for a cool use of Black 3 to show off its capabilities / optical illusion? I thought of a ‘hole’ in the top of a cardboard box? And telling people their Christmas gift is inside. See how many actually try to reach into the hole :-). I also know on Stuart’s website a mask is painted black on one side and on the back you can see that it is contoured. And in the black 2 video - the unicorn. Any other suggestions?

Hi, I recently got a bottle of the Black 2.0 and have applied 2 coats to the inside of a wooden box. I'm using it as a photo box and wanted something that would reflect as little light as possible. I did not seal or prime it prior to applying the 2.0. If I wanted to get some 3.0 to make it even darker, would I still need to seal it with the diluted glue mixture, or would the 2 coats of 2.0 suffice?

Hopefully I can receive an answer to my question... Can Black 3.0 be sanded down on on wood.? There are streaks that I would like to smooth out but unsure if sanding would have a negative affect on it... Thanks.

i want to try this on plastic press-on nails, so what sort of primer should i use? some sort of spray i assume but im not sure what to look for

At 7:00 in... mine doesnt paint like that at all... really soft brush is still leaving heaps of brush marks.. mine also looks heaps runnier out of the bottle :/

Thomas I tried on a ping pong ball before I went and got another moon. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite dark enough to get the dimensionless void I was going for. I did all the things: black 2 as primer, then two coats of black 3 with hair dryer and a night to dry between layers.

Haryo25 I put black 2.0 on as a primer, dried it with a hair dryer and then left it overnight and came back and put on a coat of black 3.0, blow dried it and left it overnight. Then repeated. It’s definitely very black. Black 3.0 absorbs 99% of light. But the ball still has clear dimension when held at arms length. If the ball is in any direct light the illuminated side is clearly brighter than the side in shadow.

@@truvc so you mean that if illuminating directly, the paint didn't completely absorb the light?

Is there a clear coat you would recommend for protecting the paint, or jus just try and be careful.

Unfortunately in the paint usage discription, it says that varnish, or a clear coat ruins the matte effect and might destroy the paint.

Hey, I'm a student making a magazine on Vantablack (inspired by the 99% invisible podcast). I plan on using your Black 3.0 on the front cover and the Pinkest Pink on the rear. Any advice on how to keep it in good condition once it's dry?

I’m using this paint for a wood project, I didn’t use the glue sealer, but I used 321 primer on it. Will this work the same if I don’t use the glue?

I bought some of this paint a few months ago and was really disappointed with the results. I bought a pair of goggles and wanted to paint the inside because the shiny plastic surface gave off way too much glare while wearing them. It's been pretty hot lately so I keep my apartment at 72° F. throught the day, which falls within the recommended temperature storage and usage. I used a fine watercolor brush to paint the goggles and I've always been one to paint lightly and spread my paint as far as it goes. I did a light coat of regular black acrylic on one of the goggles one morning and left it to dry. The next morning I did a light coat of Black 3.0 and again left it to dry for one day. On the third morning I applied another coat of Black 3.0 and again just left it out to dry And on the fourth day the goggles were still not really looking black at all so I did another coat of Black 3.0 On the fifth morning the paint was still looking pretty light. I knew I was using and storing tha paint at the right temperature, I was using a good brush, I wasn't clumping the paint into the object and I was letting it dry for more than enough time between coats. So I figured I wasn't shaking the paint well enough. This paint is really thick and I figured it wasn't mixing well inside the tiny bottle it came in. So I poured all the paint out into a jar and put a little bit of water into the bottle to shake the last bit of pigment off its walls. I primed a second pair of goggles with regular acrylic black paint and let it sit for a day. Next day I mixed the paint inside the jar for a good 5 minutes using a palette knife and did a thin coat of Balck 3.0, then did another two coats of 3.0 one day apart from one another. Still, the paint wasn't anywhere near black enough. Even in a dimly lit room, you can still see all the details on the surface of the goggles and the paint itself looks dark gray at best. It's by far the mattest paint I've ever used but I cant even call it "black". The paint looks black when I apply it but dries out significantly lighter. Maybe I got a bad batch, I know these paints are hand made, but it was very disappointing nonetheless.
