How To Use Box Junctions

Box junctions are best source of income for councils so be careful not to stop in them. You will be fined even if a little bit of your front or back tyres are on the box junction and even if you are not blocking any traffic. The whole idea for the council is to have the slightest excuse to fine you the extortionate amount of £65. Be careful with box junctions and do not allow councils to rip you off by entering them unintentionally.

The most important box junctions will likely be found at level crossings. You need a clear space the far side big enough to fit your vehicle in before not only entering the box but also breaking the plane of the first barriers. If traffic stops the far side and a queue builds up leaving no space for you, the barriers will come down on your vehicle or your vehicle will be hit by a train while you wait in the box on the train tracks. Increasing the likelihood of this type of problem developing are a side road on the right just past the crossing and a pedestrian crossing sited just beyond the level crossing. These will cause queues.

What happens if you waiting at the junction box to turn right and the lights go red. Then the pedestrian crossing goes green and people start crossing the road. Happend to me a couple of times. Can you please advise me about that because I'm going on a test soon.

@@lightcrausda so the white range rover had priority but he let me go. If you mean the vehicles where the white van is once I turn, they have a red light.

But what happens if you are driving over the box junction and you slow down but don’t stop however your red brake lights come on. Can the camera over the box junction be triggered by the red brake lights and issue you penalty notice?

It shouldn't matter if your brake lights come on. It's about whether your wheels stop moving. You could brake to slow down without stopping and this would be fine. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your information. It helps a lot. My brake light came on but my car was still moving very slowly ahead. On another occasion, I was driving on box junction and I was just about to clear the box the car in front suddenly brakes and I had to stop with my back wheels exactly on the yellow line and council sent me PCN for that.

Ok you wish to turn right so you move into the centre of the square as your exit is clear . Some of the traffic coming towards you goes pass you but then a number of car turn left and now your exit is blocked. Will you get a ticket fine for this ?

That's a good point. I'm not sure exactly as this is more aimed at people doing driving tests but my thoughts would that you shouldn't get a ticket. The people that give you a ticket should see what happened as they will be watching it on CCTV.
