Does it matter if instead of 8bit (which was your example) if one used 10 for the source?

Calman only works in 8 bit values. If you have a TPG that is capable of 10 bit output, Calman still gives it 8 bit commands, e.g., Calman tells the TPG to display an 8 bit value RGB triplet of 200/200/200, the 10 bit TPG will display an 800/800/800 patch. If you tell Calman to display an 8 bit 201/201/201 patch, it will display an 804/804/804 patch. Calman is incapable of telling the TPG to display 10 bit value 801, 802, or 803 RGB triplets. So, if you want to be as accurate as possible given that limitation, always output 8 bit patches from your source.
