After you had done the video on how to start a car in the cold I was thinking that maybe a video on electronics and camera gear in the cold would be great, too. And that's exactly what you did. Wohoo! So the saying is true: Great minds think alike. Hehe... Thanks for your video(s)!

Chemical hand warmers are also good. You can also put batteries in the thermos bottle with hand warmers, but of course they have to fit inside from the mouth opening and the temperature must not rise too high and it is good to leave the cap open in case of a malfunction. When you are filming long timelapses you have to mount hand warmer near the camera battery somehow.

All good tips. Keeping an even temperature of gear is really important. Warm batteries also. Nothing like running out for the instant photo capture of a lifetime and having the camera fog up and freeze over. A real Ah Shit moment. The new power banks and batteries with built in heater are great. A little concerned if one fries itself and catches fire. Always a concern with those high powered batteries that you really can't put out when they ignite. Take care. Safe camps and travels especially on the ice. Strange weather all over the world this year.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA I made some comments on a film where you, Matti, said you wouldn't get all technical about the cameras. I sketched a scenario where picture taking is secondary to the hiking, just some friluftsliv pass time and documenting. What gear can I look for that gets good images for light weight, not eating into the battery of my communication device (phone). You got most of my weather queries in this video, dealing with condensation and moisture. I still wonder what precautions you would take if it actually was raining when you want to shoot. For the times you want to document that 7°C hike in rain. I must admit my budget trails off at around 10 000 SEK. Beste hilsener fra Bergen.

 @JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA , I also want to know more of what the life of a modern camera file is: from being shot to being stored, backed up, and posted to social media. I want to know how I can post my camera images to social media while on the road, spending as little of my precious phone battery on the whole process as possible. Hereby, I want to let my phone rest while I enjoy photography. What are the modern possibilities of WiFi and NFC, should I transfer files to detachable media? PS: if you want to refer to my question without feeling shy, call me Ivar.

Thanks for the good info. I was pro photog my entire life and was dealing with extreme cold often. I prefer to keep all batteries inside my jacket in 2 vest pockets: one for fresh, another for used. Heat warmers are just additional weight and possible complications. I can also charge batteries in my inside pockets from power bank to the charger with short USB cord. Sony cameras allow to charge battery directly inside the camera. One way I was able to shoot once at -46C was with dummy battery inside camera body with cable to the external power pack inside my clothes. I have one for my Sony A7iii. Finally I wouldn't recommend to blow air at the camera with snow or dust, it can only push particles deeper inside. I always use soft brush for that(like makeup brushes). Be well.

Thanks! That’s really true about blowing. I have never thought about that!!! If I make this video again I will definitely change that advice. Soft brush instead of the blowing rocket! /Matti

Be sure to remove the lens cap from the lens mounted on the camera some time before you intend to film, so that if there is a temperature difference, the fogging will have time to dissipate.

Thanks for the video Matti, I see you have a peak design camera holder attached to the backpack strap, do you use it for the camera in the winter?
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA 4 ай бұрын
I use the camera holder if I use the bag as a backpack. Few times during winter but a lot more during the summer! I like the system. I had no issues with it because of winter. Maybe it’s little bit difficult with gloves to get the camera out of the holder. /Matti

6:48 I'd say the opposite, 99% of cameras can't handle low temperatures, there are only a very few cameras on the market that are weather resistent and whose electronic don't suffer from condensation and frost.
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA 4 ай бұрын
Okay… I don’t agree…but I don’t know if you or I’m having right. The camera works as long as the battery works. But what you are writing about is condensation inside the camera. That’s only an issue because you bring it inside without the bag around it. Then you get condensation on the surface but of course also inside if it’s not weather sealed. So it’s not the low temperatures that kills the camera. It’s how you treated your gear. Do you agree or what’s your opinion? /N

Great tips and yes, I share that experience, been to the polar region of norway in winter a few times. Warmer though than the higher areas inside the country-land, thx to the streams. Camera weather sealing does not exist. Yes it exists on brochure and is implemented with rubbers, but it‘s weather proofing, means direct water access is prevented as good as possible, but with all the open holes humidity can still get in in form of vapor. If a camera would be fully humidity proof it would not have the ability to zoom (air-pump moving). If air can go out or in, so does vapor. If that is slowed by some half-way isolation, it‘s equally so harder to dry out the camera, once it got the seals. Guess what happens when the seals age - trust me, they‘ll do, in 2-7 years it‘ll happen. So, get a professional camera and service it to maintain the seals, I suggest every 5years, up to you. If you think I‘m stupid, and you only trust facts, well, if you think waterproofing of the camera is a fact then add some soft paper into the camera (battery compartment and between lens and sensor, soft and carefully), then throw it into a filling-bathtub. It will not get wet or humid inside if you‘re right. Please don‘t you‘ll lose, your bet and the camera. For our waterfall fans. You see a waterfall, you go nearby and you take a picture, right? No! If you‘re nearby you stand in mist, light mist, you typically don‘t worry much and wipe it. Wrong, you wipe it in. Next moment the wind blows the mist or much much more mist onto and into the camera. Wow! Some of the cameras might die immediately, others minutes later and others don‘t. Regardless, all have taken moisture. Get it out open it and put it into cat litter with paper towels on the parts to protect/openings. And let it dry out - for hours or even days. This camera is done anyway and needs a service check, but the drying helps to stop the moisture oxidizing further on your electronics.
