Most underrated feature on these trucks if you like to crawl. If you stall out climbing a ledge just leave it in gear and let the starter do the work. Almost as good as a crawl box. I've also used it to pull further off the highway when my fuel pump disconnected.

I would add that ideally, it should be in 4-low to maximize power distribution. I think the idea is to keep the rpms low and minimize the likelihood off wheels spinning in a "make-or-break" situation, which most people can't do even with an e-brake technique. I agree that it'd be rough on the starter, but it's not really intended to be used on a regular basis. And I would argue that minimizing technology and maximizing mechanical work-arounds for the rare situation one may need it is a better way to avoid untimely malfunctions. Ultimately, some of us drive manuals because they're way more fun to drive than ATs and it takes finesse to drive them well. Having less gimmicky "features" is what is making the taco legendary much like the Hilux has been for decades.

Whatever happened to Ebrake starts for steep hills? I'd rather put a small amount of wear on the parking brake shoes than put added stress on a beefed up starter motor. For most steep hills, I can just slip the clutch like a normal person, but for incredibly steep starts, the Ebrake option has never let me down.

Wow, so that's what it does. Way cool. I just purchased a 1997 Toyota Tacoma manual trans 4x4 and was wondering what that switches purpose was. BTW there was no manual included when I bought it. Now, your explanation of not daring to go backward at all because the truck might fall off a cliff is good, but what other situations might the switch come in handy for? EDIT: So from reading some of the comments, it seems that the switch allows the starter to engage while the transmission is in gear to propel the truck forward in a situation where the engine keeps stalling or the engine is not working. So that switch could move you forward enough to get you out of a tight jam or off to the side of a road if your engine stalls and won't restart for some reason. Such a feature would have been handy for my '97 2wd Ranger when its timing belt broke at a stopsign a couple of years ago. I could have used a switch like that to move the truck off to the side of the road instead of having to get out and push it while trying to steer it too.

Had this truck two years, snowboarding every weekend I get the chance, never used this feature. Can not imagine a situation in which this would be better than using the hand break. Is there anyone on here that actually uses this feature? This seems like it would help a 16 year old who stalled on a hill out, but other than that I am just constantly afraid I am going to hit that button with my knee and clutch start cancel my insurance policy into the car parked in front of me in at work. Its funny when he says "despite my best efforts this is what happens when I try to roll forward on a one degree grade" when really it looks like he had release the break, wait for the truck to build backward momentum, and then drop the clutch to get wheel spin. I bet it took several takes to actually get the truck to slip like that.

For those of you who referred to him as an idiot for using this feature I took the following right out of my Toyota owners manual.....The switch allows the vehicle to be driven out of difficult situations by cranking the engine with the clutch engaged. Never use the switch for normal engine starting......I would now say that Toyota included this feature as a part of this intended purpose.

As part of getting my Swedish driver's license (which is very difficult to get!) we were taught that if, in the rare event, your car stalls and won't turn over, on railroad tracks or in a dangerous location, you can use the starter motor to advance the vehicle out of the danger zone.

as mentioned in previous comments, starting with the e-brake or having a hill start assist in the manual truck would do the trick. thats really just going to kill your starter a lot faster. i'm confused as to why the automatic truck comes with the hill assist instead of the manual, auto really doesn't need it.

I've only ever used Clutch Start Cancel for the reach in and start option, or from the passengers seat, to reach over and start the the truck. As for starting on the slick, and avoid tire spin, start in 2nd or 3rd. Not enough torque to spin at this point. Otherwise, just release the clutch just enough to see the RPMs start to drop, release the brake and the truck will just sit there until you completely release the clutch.

What makes you so sure, just because it has it? Starters are more expensive and more destructible than brakes. Many modern manuals have hill start systems that automatically hold the brakes just long enough for you to get going and not roll back, and it works very well. There's absolutely no reason that I see for them to be using a starter instead... It's really kind of dumb.

WillerNK uhm because it's a toyota , not a freaking ford. besides, I don't think you did a lot of off roading besides driving through some mild snow. doing the clutch /brakes /gas routine isn't for everyone. my landcruiser has hill start assist, but it's an automatic.

+Viren S It's a Toyota my ass. Nothing is indestructible, not even Toyota's starters. Everything breaks, so stop being so ignorant. Another thing, if you can't do the clutch, brake and gas routine, you shouldn't be off-roading at all, particularly in a manual.

Thank you for this video. It's very helpful. I do have a couple questions since you're so experienced with the 6-speed manual. Is it common for there to be a clunk when you shift gears? And number two, is a common when you go from first to second the RPMs of the engine don't seem to go down as your shifting into 2nd? In other words they maintain a higher RPM as your shifting. Thank you again.
@RonPaul4MMXII

A lightweight flywheel should fix solve that. The stock flywheel is 31lbs. The rpms hanging between shifts drives me nuts. I'll prob get a lightweight flywheel when I have to replace the clutch.

It sounds like no body really does any research about a topic before posting wrong information about it. The Clutch Start Cancel, in my mind, is similar to the Auto Start/Stop Tech in a lot of vehicles nowadays. People think it wears out the starter super fast, but my understanding is that the feature has a completely separate starter that is beefed up to handle the added stress of constantly stopping and starting.. I would think that the starter on Toyota trucks would be beefed up to handle the added stress that the Clutch Start Cancel would put on it. Also, it's a Toyota. It's not going to break down as fast as you think it will unless it is abused. Just my two cents on the matter. I think it's a really cool feature.

''you lose crawl control and multi-terrain select'' with 6-speed manual. That's not correct. These features are for beginner off-roaders who don't know how to interpret the terrain or know how to steer, gas, or break. With A-Trac and experience a good driver can do all or more than an automatic. Plus it's way more fun and challenging to drive.
