Many of the videos out there discuss hand position before and during approach. This is the first one to discuss anything about the actual hand position at release. Between this one and grip at release, it goes a LONG way to helping my game. Recommending this to all my bowling friends.

~ For the no thumb bowlers~ I don't use a thumb and I bowl one handed, so using the same concept of thumb position I change the position of my pointer finger or pinky and sometimes both if needed to be more aggressive down lane.

For each position on the clock the thumb releases from, where is the thumb pointing as you hold the ball in the setup before you take your approach?

JR, I see that you change your fingers exit angle in relation to swing direction. This is easy to do when you are bowling and pro shop work. The concept is maybe a bit tough to grasp for less advanced bowlers. I have a good idea what you teach with this video. My bckgrd of bowling goes numbering 53 years. I truly appreciate your showing the tricks you learned and applying them on the lane. Kudos!

I totally agree with this teaching and I have bowled many years, avg 190 to 206 and I throw a lot of tilt. I taught my sons this method and they don't have much tilt. The question here is, Can one persons ten O clock feel different than another persons 10 O clock? I believe the answer is yes. A lot of times as with many sports, what feels like text book, might not actually be textbook. In this sport and with other sports our bodies want to do what's easiest for us to do, and our mind will tell us, yep, that's it , you go it. Hogan the golfer wrote a book on things to do in the swing, later with modern technology they analyzed him and found he didn't do a lot of what he wrote. But they believe he was writing what it felt like. I want to change my release in bowling, get more axis rotation, I can drive my thumb at 10 o clock all day long, and still my roll doesn't change from a spinner. Why? Because there are other factors that lead up to doing this right, the swing, the timing, how low you get, the strength of your wrist to stay under etc. Even though this teaching is right it's just one element that is needed, if other elements are missing, then your with me. LOL Any thoughts JR?

I never knew about this. A most interesting concept. I can see where it would improve the scoring. I am learning how to string strikes, but somehow I lose it. This video makes sense with the different thumb releases. I assume all of this going on in a small window of time at the “ bottom “ of the swing. I also notice that the modern game requires the hand pass the foul line to effect rotational speed. I never paid attention to this before.

Which side should be the thumb inward or outward?
@mr.aerial1885
@mr.aerial1885 5 жыл бұрын
Very nice video but the drill and weight blocks - there are thumb weights, leverage weights, pin in, pin out etc to meet your needs. Thumb weight gets it into an early roll and less flare regardless of release - likely to roll out unless the lanes are very slick - like the first shot - while as others skid the balls further and flare it with stronger back ends - thus the drill of the ball is a good percentage in play as well as your release. It all comes together.

Very. Interesting observation. I really wish it could be shown in slow motion. I also note that growing up, the suit case was taught. Modern bowling and the high performance of these balls seem to dictate these changes. I guess there is a “ feel “ to this and that is what needs to be developed. I know it does not work for all, but the theory of it makes sense......

Is your delivery spinner or semi roller? I have spinner release. I cannot make semi roller track. I can make semi roller track only with back up release, but when is 42 feet oiling the ball goes just streight, no hook and no roll to go to pocket. How to get semi roller delivery. I tried to use ring finger domain when I release, hand and palm streigt or little to right ( right handed) Not succes yet.

At what position of hand and the address for the ten pin alone ? I tried to used the 1200 hand position ,start about 35 board left and aim across the forth right arrow . Alot of times the ball would hook just right before tenth pin. I am very frustrated about missing the tenth pin. Any advice ? Maybe JR could show on how to pick the tenth pin video.

I bowl once a week and had our sweeps last Saturday. Lanes were so dry and my ball always end on the high side. My thumb position is at 3 and end up at 12 at release. Is there any other recourse besides the hand positions, a symmetric ball and moving further left? Love your videos.

@booze1903
@booze1903 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is where I get confused too. I get your thumb being at 9 or 10:00 at release, but how are you holding the ball at setup? Like are you you supposed to put your thumb at this position at the start and try to maintain it all the way through the swing, or do you start with your thumb in a position to where you have to rotate your hand at the bottom to get to that 9:00?
@WowUrFKinBad
@WowUrFKinBad 5 жыл бұрын
@@booze1903 I'm no "expert" in this matter. But from slowing down the video. He has his thumb pointing towards his target. Which I would guess is around the 1 o'clock area, and at release is when he rotates to 9-11 o'clock.

What should be the weight ideally like heavier or lighter one to hook the ball and the speed to be release ?? When I tried spinning with heavier with full speed I didn't have any rotation on the ball.... And also tell me is it thumb finger to release First then middle finger to follow up with a rotation on hand ??
@reneg2213
@reneg2213 5 жыл бұрын
Ideally, it depends on your body weight, size, and strength. But keep this in mind, the heavier the ball, the harder it is for pins to deflect your ball (which is a good thing). Most of my teammates also all roll 15lbs so that may be the desired weight but more importantly it's whatever you feel comfortable with. Having your own ball with a custom drill also has an impact on how heavy the ball feels in your hand. When trying to hook the ball you want the thumb to exit the ball first and the fingers after will dictate revolutions. Hope this helps.
@WowUrFKinBad
@WowUrFKinBad 5 жыл бұрын
@@reneg2213 Most important thing is to get ball weight that isn't to heavy, or to light. As both can cause you bad habits, in terms of releasing the ball. With today's high performance balls, I honestly don't think ball weight matters as much. Unless throwing really light balls. Most bowlers should be fine with 13-15lb ball. I actually seen a video on this subject not to long ago, and they compared between 13-15lb balls. Same ball, just different weights, and in terms of deflection at the pins. The difference was very minor. Enough for the person who was doing the study, to say the most important thing was the bowler having a proper ball release. Which ultimately comes down to a bowler not throwing a ball to heavy, or to light. I will say I do believe deflection is an issue for balls that are to light. But when talking about balls in the 13-15lb range, don't buy a ball that feels a little to heavy for you. Just because someone told you that extra pound of weight would carry better.
