Kate, I've been working on coding for only a few weeks now and I've never been so lost. I do the program thru Penn Foster, so learning only thru books without "seeing" examples has been challenging. YOU are a god send. I've only watched 5min of your video here, but I need to tell you thank you!!!!!!! for putting this together. Nobody at Penn Foster has been available to me when my schedule allows. I am so glad I found you! (btw-I'm using my son's acct here, my name is Stephanie)

Gabe Ure Hi Gabe, I have been looking at Kate’s videos in Coding. She explains it how we can understand it. I work in the medical field for 20 yrs as appointments Scheduler and Registration and would like to learn Medical billing and especially Coding to enhance my learning in the medical field. I as well am interested in joining an online course and have been learning about Penn Foster. How is it going for you?
@cindygomez54145 жыл бұрын
Gabe Ure Hi Stephanie, how many textbooks did you get included with your tuition? Supposed to be six. The rest are ebooks right? I’m trying to figure out if to join Penn Foster or Ashworth in GA. I’m in Florida. How is it going for you? I’m a visual learner so just reading and not seeing examples would be hard that’s why I see Kate’s videos to understand it better.
@mayciebroussard69555 жыл бұрын
@@cindygomez5414 Don't do Ashworth! I did that program as well and it was a complete scam. They send you the tests, but the answer key is in the back so it is so easy to cheat your way through the course without learning anything. Penn Foster has been great and preparing me for medical billing. They offer so much more than Ashworth ever did. Good luck!

Right now I'm supposed to "tab" my books. I just bought the printable kind with colored tabs. I know my OCD will bother me if I don't have it typed. Do you have a video on ideas for tabbing? Also Thank you for responding so quickly. :)
@codingwithkate37927 жыл бұрын
No problemo!!! I actually haven’t tabbed my books and didn’t really feel the need to so I am of no use to you there! I have heard that tabbing your books is best when you are consistently using specific chapters, but I’d say tab them in whatever way makes sense to you! I can do some research nd see what other coders do for tabbing 😁
@codingwithkate37927 жыл бұрын
Also, be aware of the rules for tabbing your books for whichever exam you plan to take. Go on whichever organization website (ahima or aapc) and Find if they have any specific rules with what tabbing “practices” are allowed for when you take the exam. I’ve read that for the CCA/CCS they do not allow certain types of tabs, etc. Be aware of that so you don’t go through all of that trouble and then find out the day of the exam that they will not let you use those tabs or the book, etc.

Amar Bitt the CPC is offered through a different test taking business than the CCA/CCS. I’ll have to look up how to find test dates for the CPC but as for the CCA/CCS you can look on Pearson Vue’s website (there will be a link on AHIMAs website for scheduling an exam) to find opening dates/times (they offer test times almost every day of the week throughout the year).

Hi Kate. Thank you for having these informative and thorough content regarding coding. I'm not a coder, myself, but my brother is currently working from home and coding for a company in Texas. There isn't much support from within the company to aid with specificity, so he's on an island. He's interested in finding KZbin channels or websites that provide a multirude of case studies and examples, in addition to your content, to further his expertise? Do you have any suggestions for places on the internet that have such case studies and the way to accurately code them? Thanks again for your very organized and educational content. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Stay safe.

I had a rough time with my first coding scenario quiz in class and I'm currently looking up practice scenarios to code online. Do you have any tips ? :)
@codingwithkate37926 жыл бұрын
Sony Pix with diagnosis coding, I suggest learning a lot about the anatomy and physiology of the big diagnosis groups, that will help you understand why the sequencing is important and also what codes are needed when the codebook doesn’t give as much direction. All I can say is: practice, practice, practice!
@codingwithkate37926 жыл бұрын
Sony Pix also, about 95% of the time your first listed diagnosis is what occasioned the visit (what brought them to the healthcare provider) and the codebook will give you instructions if additional codes are required or if a different code must go first. But always, always, always pinpoint what symptom or condition caused the patient to see the doctor. For example: the pt came in complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. During the exam the doctor also noticed enlarged lymph nodes on the neck. The doctor diagnosed the pt with a cardiac condition (I’m not creative enough to come up with a specific condition lol) and prescribed an antibiotic for the lymph nodes. In this scenario the principle/primary diagnosis is the cardiac condition because that is what brought them to the doctor-complaining of chest pains caused them to seek medical attention. The second listed diagnosis would be the enlarged lymph nodes (again I’m not creative enough to come up with an actual condition for this). The patient never complained of the lymph nodes and it was only discovered during the exam so it would be listed second since it is not in direct connection to the cardiac condition.

Speed dancer I haven’t quite figured out how to access Coding clinic, I know most encoders have Coding clinic info in it but I don’t have an encoder. I can definitely figure out more about Coding clinic. As far as cases online, I haven’t found a good source that has cases for free. AHIMA has books with cases but they are a bit expensive. When I find a free source online I will let ya know!

Kate, you are saying K65.O. Should it not that "O" be "zero?" "O" is an alfa code, just like "K" is alpha, but "zero" is a numeric code. Please clarify. I think you should say K65.zero, not "O."

you really amazing ! im taking coding class this semester and my major is electronic medical coding and billing, i heard i should get a certificate before having a job, would you please explain
@codingwithkate37926 жыл бұрын
Amar Bitt aw thank you!! Yes, with any coding position (not sure about billing since they are separate certifications and usually separate positions) you are required to be certified (I’d say about 95% of the healthcare facilities/physician offices/etc in the US require certification) because it shows the employer that you have the knowledge and skill to perform the job successfully. Coding is an important aspect of how the healthcare facility gets paid and if you have coders who are not certified and do not have the skills necessary they can cost the facility a lot of money because they will be coding incorrectly causing rejected insurance claims, incorrect reimbursement rates, etc. Aside from that, certification allows you to have higher pay, have coding positions that have more responsibility/more complex coding/Inpatient coding and get any specialty certifications if you choose to be a specialty coder. Hope that helps!!
@abitt20606 жыл бұрын
It helps a lot ! thanks! if i wanna take coding certificate, what steps i can follow them, for example, website, location?
@codingwithkate37926 жыл бұрын
Amar Bitt I will actually have a video coming out later this week that will have all of that info! But in the meantime go to ahima.org (if you plan on taking the certification exam through AHIMA), go to the “certification” tab on the top left of the page and click on the cert you want. From there click “applying” and “exam prep” for information and instructions!
@abitt20606 жыл бұрын
yeah!.. but my question was we do it from home if not where?
@codingwithkate37926 жыл бұрын
Amar Bitt oh I see what you mean. Pearson Vue has physical locations around the country (usually in professional office building) and within their office space is where they have the testing room with computers (or a paper test). They don’t offer the exam to be taken online from home because it allows for cheating, etc so your only option to take the cert exam is at the physical testing location (this also goes for cert exams through the AAPC) Keep an eye out for a video coming out later this week- I will be taking my cert exam on Wednesday and will be doing a debrief video going in depth on what it was like, etc which will give a lot of good information on taking the exam!
@rosaally6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a great video, but imo, you should differentiate between mentioning the letter "O" to saying zero. It can confuse people because they will get the code wrong when they think is the zero is an "O". I had a few classmates who made that mistake and the instructor addressed this common mistake.

I am 47 yrs old and looking to get a new job. I never really wanted a career but this seems like a good idea. Would I just need a certificate to get a good job? Is there anything you would tell someone if you think they shouldn't pursue this? Like fill in this blank , "if you are _______ you should not do this"!
@codingwithkate37927 жыл бұрын
Pam C coding is a complex but fascinating job, if you have a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology, enjoy problem solving and analysis, and like following guidelines/having clear directions and boundaries within your work, and repetition then you will like medical coding. To be a medical coder you need to take courses (online or in a brick and mortar college) to learn about the different coding systems and how to code correctly, also taking anatomy and physiology and medical terminology since that is the information you will only be working with on a daily basis. Then you can take the certification exam through AHIMA or AAPC. Once you pass you will be qualified for an entry level coding position (usually titled “Coder 1”). But if you are only interested in a job that pays well and can be done from home and that is the only reason, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. But I encourage you to take a few courses through AHIMA or AAPC so you can get a feel for the type of work without blowing out your budget. Also, check out some of my other videos where I go into ICD-10-CM/PCS so you can get an idea of what the books look like and the overall process of coding. Don’t get discouraged if you feel overwhelmed or as if you have no idea what’s going on, if you decide you want to peruse Coding it will get easier as you start to learn and incorporate anatomy and physiology into the coding process. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!!!
@mspamela20087 жыл бұрын
Kate - Thank you so much! I will continue to watch your videos. The "shadowing " video was hilarious! I DO happen to "enjoy problem solving and analysis, and like following guidelines/having clear directions and boundaries within your(my) work, and repetition"! That's so amazing you phrased it just like that. However I have never had anatomy and physiology classes. BUT those areas of study fascinate me. Because the human body, made in God's image, is so awe inspiring...it just makes me love and fear my God all the more! :-) I can't wait to see what He has in store for me...

@codingwithkate37927 жыл бұрын
yucel mantilla I’m not exactly sure what you mean, do you have an example?
@yucelmantilla37047 жыл бұрын
yes sure, for example a patient has being treated for a urinary tract infection two weeks ago and remainig symptomatic, this patient was referred to a urologist and diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis, the acute pyelonephritis code is N10 and urinary tract infection code is N39.0. Do I have to use both codes for this diagnostic?
@codingwithkate37927 жыл бұрын
yucel mantilla I’m not a professional coder but I would say if the urologist only states his diagnosis as just acute pyelonephritis, then I would only code N10,. If the urologist listed both the acute pyelonephritis AND a UTI as his diagnosis then you would put both. I would suggest going on a coding forum and presenting this question because I’m not entirely sure if the UTI caused the pyelonephritis, if you can have both diagnoses at one time, etc. I wish I could have been of more help!
