I loved the structure of this video. You went STRAIGHT to the point, and started providing examples right away. Well lit, great audio, great viewpoint and angles. Not an overly long drawn out 6 minute intro “well this here is a Namibian plastic pen first designed in 1994 by …… and if you would like the msrp is 4.57 etc….” Great video 👍 👍 ❤️

You can make an easy modification to a bamboo pen to make it hold much more ink; putting a 2mm broad, about 2 or 3 cm long strip of aluminium ( cut from a soda/beer can) in the hole, the end about where the slit in the pen ends, it has to have an s curve to do this right. The pen will draw WAY longer between dips.

I think not all India ink is waterproof. It depends on what has been added to it. If they added shellac, which they add to drawing inks, it will dry waterproof. But some India ink, which is really the ink that is in those Chinese sticks, has not had shellac added and is thus not waterproof. I think shellac is soluble with ammonia or glass cleaner, so that will clean it up if it has dried. And maybe even some kind of alcohol, which I cannot remember for sure. It's been along time since I used shellac. But perhaps denatured alcohol? Not sure, sorry. I'm working on calligraphy, and I have just learned that if it says "drawing ink" it has the shellac in it. If it doesn't have shellac, the ink will clean up with just water.

Does india ink go bad? I bought a small bottle 2 years ago and didnt really use it and now its a bit thick. I wanted to try using a dip pen with it but i think the consistency is too thick to do anything but I'm not sure.

I just found a little bottle I bought at least 25 years ago. Works fine. If yours is a bit thick, yeah dilute it, best would be with distilled water.

When I did art gcse, I’m sure that we literally covered acrylic paintings in the ink, and then washed it off.. and it was a really cool effect, but I’m too nervous to try it again in case I’ve misremembered and I ruin my painting! 😂

Would you be ab,e to dilute the ink and then I'd it with some sepia colors?
@LoriPeace5 жыл бұрын
That would look really nice, wouldn't it? I wonder what you'd need to use for the sepia? Just regular watercolors wouldn't be waterproof like the India ink. Maybe diluted acrylic paint? Then again, I understand India ink comes in different colors -- you can probably buy it in sepia, or mix colors to get the shade your want.

Hello! I've been meaning to try diluting some india ink and putting it in a water brush but I am worried that it could clog it up. Do you have a ink-to-water ratio you recommend and have you had any issues with the water brush clogging? I'd love some input on that. Also, thanks for the lovely and informative video!

Can you use it undiluted in a watercolor pen?
@romelmadray10566 жыл бұрын
Hi Best Wishes for the New Year, What brushes would you recommend for use with india inks. I believe that these inks damage traditional natural hair fibers because of the shellac content in them. Will this ink work with a Princeton Neptune Quill which is a synthetic squirrel, da Vinci Watercolor Series 5898 Casaneo Paint Brush a "wavy" synthetic fiber developed by da Vinci",Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour Brushes an advanced synthetic brush and Princeton Series 4050 Synthetic Sable Watercolor brush. Can these brushes be cross used with india inks and standard watercolor? Also can India inks be layered? and do you find that the under layer shifts once dry?

Have you ever made your own India Ink?
@edzejandehaan92654 жыл бұрын
Alltough ingredients are easy to find, the proces to make this right is difficult. I like to make my own art supplies where I can (made willow charcoal, bamboo pens, silverpoint tools etc), but I don't think making this kind of ink yourself is worth it, it will be very inferior to the store bought stuff.

how do you clean the bamboo pen ?
@SketchBookSkool7 жыл бұрын
You can usually wash it in water. You can also scrape it with a pen knife, get off the dried ink, even change the shape of the nib. It's just bamboo after all!

Actually in general the more i work on my art the less i like canson in general. I want to try Arches Hot Press with ink I heard that it goes on great with that paper and is absorbed a little which i would prefer vs the marker paper.
