This video will go over the use of roundover bits on a CNC router. These bits are designed to create a roundover on the edge of a profile cut or bowl.
I have found over the years I put off trying something like putting a roundover on my CNC project because I am not quite sure what type of bit to use and how to use it.
For a long time I would simply cut my project out or put a bowl in a project and then take the cut project to my router table or trim router and put the roundover or chamfer on the cut project. If this is what you are doing, then this video is for you.
In this video I will share how a roundover can be put on at the time of cutting your CNC project with bits that are reasonably priced and not that difficult to use.
Equipment used in this:
Laguna IQ CNC
Bits Used:
RIP Precision Tools 1/2" Point Roundover - .250" Radisus - 1/2" Cut Diameter a link is provided below:

RIP Precision Tools 7/16" Bowl Bit - 1/8"" Radius - 1/4" Shank
SKU: BB-437125F2 a link is provided below:

ripprecisiontools.com has provided me a discount code viewers can use to get a discount on bits purchased with this code. It is not an affiliate code - I get no compensation but they are a good company to deal with and their bits are well priced.
RIP Precision Tools Discount Code: ROBSAN10 for 10% Discount
Disclosure: I do have an Amazon Affiliate Account. So if you buy at my Amazon link below I will receive a small commission. There should be no cost to you.
The plunge roundover bit I used in this build is a Whiteside Rounover bit number 2052 and can be purchased on Amazon at the following link: amzn.to/3uIppa1
I have no affiliate association with Bits&Bits.com. But Jay Bates does and he also has a coupon code. Router bits - use code JAYBATES for 10% off - bitsbits.com/
The bit can also be purchase on Bits&Bitys.com Astra Coated Whiteside 2052 - a link is provided below on where this bit can be purchased:

Great video! I have both these bits and have never used them because I didn't know how to setup the tool path. Thanks for explaining everything so thoroughly!

I always was wondering how to use a round over bit on a CNC tool path. If you have time:) I would like to see how to use these bits on the outside edge of board. Where I would normally use a table router for.

I'll think about that. I have a project that I am getting ready to do with Laguna Tools. Maybe I'll incorporate it on that video.

I'll have to do some Aspire stuff. I have focused mostly on vCarve Pro lately because more people have that software.

Good info. It seems that the point bit has some bad geometry. As a 1/4" roundover, if you set the bit to cut 1/4" deep, at best you should get a very minor ridge line at the top, not the 1/32"+ you got. Also, if you went closer to the .25 depth then you might not have gotten the ridge from the bowl bit. Or maybe the bowl bit has some geometry failings too? Was impressed that the Whiteside bit did so well. Thanks for explaining the offset so well.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I thought I responded on my phone before, this happened a couple times last month. So sorry, I appreciate you watching. Some good thoughts. Thank you for sharing your thoughts,

Great video. I’m rather new at this. I wondered about adding roundovers. Would running the bowl bit before the round over bit reduce stress on the roundover bit, especially the one with the fine point? Thanks.

Good thoughts - but don’t believe you need to worry about the tips on those pointed roundover bits. It really shouldn’t matter. With that said, you can try both ways of running your tool paths and see what works best on your machine.

Do you cut the roundover before you cut the bowl or after? Like on v-carve you run the v-carve bit first always. Is it the same for roundover? Second question: it seems the pointed roundover is the way to go, so why do you need the “offset” bit?

I have done it both ways. Don’t really have a rule of thumb for this. To be honest I usually only use the CNC for round-overs for some projects - typically if I am going to make several if the same thing. Most of the time instead of setting up this toolpath. I don’t always surface all projects - if something is visually fat instead of messing with getting the right z-height setting I just use my router table. I did want to demonstrate how it can be done if someone wants to do this.

I forgot to answer about the offset bit. I actually had that one first and picked up the pointed rounded over later. In truth I tend to like the finish on the offset bit a little better, for some reason I experience a little less tearout with the plunge offset bit.

I just started using bowl bits making small trays, can I use the round over after I've done the pocket cut with the bowl bit ?
@RobSandstromDesigns
@RobSandstromDesigns Жыл бұрын
Yes…I’ve done that many times. But, be careful the diameter of the round-over bit fits into all areas you are trying to roundover. I’ve made some catchall trays and baby dishes with complex shapes like elephants and mermaids. If not careful in tight turn areas may get a surprise or two if you know what I mean. Hopefully you’ll notice on the preview. Won’t say how I know this 😂 😂

Do you know how to toolpath and add the bit this using Enroute software? I don't have a 2D Profile option.

I am sorry Ben but I don't know a thing about Enroute software - first I have heard of it. Now I need to go check it our - just because you got me curious. I do all of my CNC design work in Sketchup and Vectric vCarve or Aspire. Kind of a one trick pony that way - wished I could've helped.

Ummm.. D 1/4 has nothing to do with depth. Yikes!

Thanks for feedback. i think you are talking about time stamp 2:20 or about that point. You are correct that D on the shaft of a bit normally stands for Diameter not depth. If you look closely at the markings on this bit, it actually has multiple “D’s” stamped on it. The one is for 1/2” diameter and when I was looking why there was a second “D” I was informed at that time this was to share the “depth” of the bit was 1/4” - didn’t realize this was not a normal marking at the time. But, notice in the video I do mention to measure and real depth and do some practice cuts with your bits.
