The scale factor in VCarve for estimation purposes affects the visual representation and the estimated time calculations, but it does not impact the actual run time of the CNC machine. The run time is determined by the toolpath settings, feed rates, and the complexity of the design. So, even if you set the scale factor to 1 or 2 for estimation, the actual run time on the machine will remain the same, as long as the toolpath parameters and design details are unchanged. Nice video for some who are starting off with CNC programming.
@IDCWoodcraft17 сағат бұрын
johnkramer5949, Thanks for sharing your insights! You're absolutely right about the scale factor in VCarve-it primarily affects the visual aspects and estimation, but the actual run time depends on the toolpath settings and the design complexity. I'm glad you found the video helpful for beginners!

I watched your video "How to Reduce Tool Path Cut Run Time" VERY INFORMATIVE and I took pages of notes. I just purchased a Shard SD120 and NO CNC experience but do a lot of woodworking. Wanted to get into CNC work. Having issue with installing my VCarve software but should have that fixed with them shortly. Was wondering if you have a video for beginners explaining in detail to someone getting started into CNC. Your approach to the segment I watched and how you walked through it is terrific and done very well. But little too early for me at this point. Very great instructor, wish you had a class. Will look on your site and follow.

I just watched this on my tv and wanted to stop in and like and comment. My comment is this…….every or most every subscriber or viewer should send this gentleman $12 thats basically $1 a month for a PERSONAL CNC COACH for a year. Where can we find that especially a top notch guy like this????? You know it’s worth it, I’ve sent my $12+ in and am trying to encourage you to do the same thing. He’s giving the knowledge away and that’s why he deserves the great karma and appreciation of the $1 a month or $12 a year. Thanks again dude

I returned to this video to help me reduce the overall run time on my production runs and it works! You mentioned a few times about increasing the feed rates on the beefier CNC machines. It would be cool to have a beefy CNC machine selection box in the IDC Woodcraft feeds and speeds app. Then have it automatically increase the feeds and speeds settings. This would be very helpful to me since I am going to be running both a beefier and more light weight CNC machines.

I'm looking forward to getting the body of my CNC.. I have 5 of those bits atm pal. That's not a bad start. I need to get a surfacing bit though. The 4 basic u spoke of cost me 40 euros and one of them is the carving bit.. they're cheap from Sinoprol or a company with a name like that. The are sharp as heck but at that price they won't probably last all that long Garrett.. I will be calling into ur space to get some good bits in the near fiuture once I have learned from these ones first. Here's a two-header for you: Side one, coming from 3D printing, (FDM first that was taken over by resin-MSLA), prints take A Long Time and you just optimize them the best you can, picking up tricks along the way to cut hours off the final estimate, but you're still facing 6-12 hour prints for large, functional objects or whatever is on the docket for that time. Coming to CNC, a 3-5 hour cut for a functional part without loads of post-processing seemed like a massive win. The other side of that is estimate times vary WILDLY between software packages with all other settings being equal in regards to feeds and speeds, etc. Having gone through the gamut of trials for possible options, I've found a few that work great, two that are okay, and some I may gravitate towards when I'm back at six figure production levels but can't justify the expense right now. Fusion, ironically, is terrible at processing complex parts. It's not great already just in the CAD section even with breaking everything down to small components, it starts struggling hard or just outright crashes as soon as you start calculating toolpaths, and I'm using above-average PC hardware. So when I started looking at CAM processors, I was flabbergasted at how quickly some of them processed those same complex parts (like from 10 minutes to a few seconds) and spit out estimates like 25-45 minutes to rough and 90 minutes to 3 hours for finish cuts, detail level dependant. And here I was being super happy with a 5 hour estimate down from 12 hours of resin print time!
@IDCWoodcraft2 ай бұрын
C-M-E, It sounds like you've had quite the journey transitioning from 3D printing to CNC machining! You're absolutely right; the differences in processing times can be striking, especially when you find a CAM software that can handle complex parts efficiently. It’s fascinating how the right tools can make such a big difference in productivity. I can understand the frustration with software performance; it's great that you've found options that suit your needs better. Keep enjoying the CNC process-it's such a rewarding craft!

Thanks, Garrett you just saved me a butt load of time. I have a project that is a 15-hour cut. I can't wait to see how much I can reduce that by.

Wow. I adjusted a few things and On one project I went from 2:39:41 down to 1:24:04. I adjusted the feeds and speeds and the depth per pass. Then I adjusted my Scale Factor to 1.0.. New Total Time is 59.06... Wow... Thank you soooooo much..

Just found your channel, great content. I'm in Australia and I run a PDJ 2642 pilot pro cnc with a 2.2kw water cooled spindle. I think I'll be knocking up my speeds a bit after seeing this.

Very informative Garrett I appreciate how you break the project down into segments and provide additional information specific to that segment. I have a background in Digital Embroidery Digitizing using several programs and can see similarities albite different labels. This is my first comment on any of your videos and I am finalizing my decision on a CNC Router but yet to make a decision on Software. I have one question on the final paths. Do you put in stop/resume/start commands on your final paths in order to move/remove your clamps and if so how far away do you stop your cutting? Thanks and I look forward to more videos! Bob K.
@IDCWoodcraft Жыл бұрын
Bobk, I am so glad to hear it. Congrats on wanting to jump into CNC. I did not put stop/resume or start commands on my final toolpaths. It is best to get your clamps as far away from the final project toolpaths as possible.
