One good tip for the UV light is that more than power the wavelength is important. Violet light is 400nm. Many UV flashlights are 395nm, which is borderline. Excellent resin curing lights are 365nm and are still very affordable.

So #1 , I directly applied it to the board so I did have too much, #2 there WAS flux residue on the joints that I was masking, #3 my light IS infact PURPLE but doesn't look quite like yours so I'm leaning towards mine not really being UV, #4 thank you for the video and I apologize for saying that I got different solder mask when it was user error that was the problem,. Solder mask is basically UV resin, which heats up to cure, so that’s why that hot air trick works. It works with any type of resin you want to cure faster actually.

I got a problem, maybe you can help with this one too: after soldering I use Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, I tend to use a designated toothbrush, sometimes Q-tips and other hard brushes. My problem is, that after the alcohol has evaporated, I got kind of a sticky residues on the PCBs, that feel very disgusting. I even tried with paper towels, it is so hard to remove those sticky residues. Do you have a tip or technique how to solve this problem? Best wishes and a thousand thanks, Michael

Thanks so much! This gave my an idea. My soldermask wouldn't cure at all.. But when you metioned the hot air I knew what was wrong.. I was using soldermask in 15 degreese C, way to cold, so I turned up the heat in my DIY room and booom! Soldermask cured in 10 seconds. LoL

Having worked with similar products that react to UV, I know it's so hard to get a ball park indication on UV Curing conditions. They don't specify intensity, frequency or whether it needs a broad spectrum UV. Terms like powerful or more powerful are totally useful for quantifying a UV source.

UV curable substances have long polymers chains that easily slide past each other as a liquid (or paste). UV photons break bonds in these polymer chains; visible photons have too little energy to break the bonds. These dangling ends will re-bond -- sometimes with other chains; it is this "cross-linking" that converts the liquid into a solid. By heating the liquid, you reduce the probability that the same two ends will re-bond and increase the probability of cross-linking. (Heating also evaporates the liquid solvent more quickly, but cross-linking is the key to UV curing.) A certain cross-link density (number per volume or number per weight) converts the liquid to solid. Exposure is intensity times time. Intensity is higher close up (I~1/r^2) so holding the light closer helps. The rate that bonds are broken is proportional to intensity (brightness), but it is also optimized when the energy in the photons (wavelength) matches the bond energy well. Since thick puddles have more volume (and weight), they need a larger total number of cross-links and a longer exposure than thin puddles.

Awesome tecnic on the solder mask, and i was wondering why it was taking to many time, when in others videos was taking 3 seconds, now we know the secret, and the power station is awesome to, i have one, and not only shows up how much ampers does it take, but also gives the exactly ampers that it needs, for exp. I have a older phone that i use only 0,5A, all time, other phone it starts at 2A, and as it goes charging passing de 50% starts lowing the ampers given to the phone, i believe is some sort of protection to conserve and explan the life time of the battery.
