More tips: -a lot of what I'll talk about here is also noted in Menu > Help Menu. -Matt talked a lot about cards but not at all about dice. Dice can be rolled by tapping R, just like cards can be shuffled, and both can be rolled/shuffled by grabbing the deck and waving your mouse around a lot. It's quite fun. From there you can throw the dice to roll them. Don't roll your cards. Most regular dice can also change their faces by hitting Q or E, and will flip to the other side with F, but there are also many custom dice that will not do this. -The host is gonna be responsible for technical support, it's the tradeoff for playing in digital and not getting guests drinks. If someone is having an issue with things not loading in, right-click what hasn't loaded for them, hit Custom, and then without changing anything, hit Accept. -Many custom games have assets hosted on other websites, which can twig your antivirus software. Others will have long ago deleted what was needed to get things to work. In most of these cases, it's better to just pick a different game. -If your camera is in some way wonky, press Space to revert it to its default position. "P" will cycle you through the 3 kinds of seeing, 3rd person, 1st person, and top down. -if holding ALT to zoom on a card isn't helping, maybe because what you're trying to read fills the screen to start with and you cannot zoom anymore, instead hold "M" over where you wish to look to activate a magnifying glass. -the Host is able to adjust hand colors, dimensions of playing pieces, and more. use the Rotate tool and its associated tools to get exact placements right, and this can include hidden zones. The Host can also spawn new Hidden Zones if someone needs to sort things out secretly, or they can reassign colors. Spawn new hands of the same active player colors if they have too many cards but not all of them are critical all the time. -If you'd like to include parts from another custom game (we had to track damage on a gloomhaven summon but none of us could figure out how, so we grabbed a bag of Imperial Assault Damage tokens), click Games, then find the game you're wanting to steal from. Click the 3 dots in that thumbnail's upper right hand corner, and hit Expand. From here you can pick parts as if you were picking generic pieces. -tap L to LOCK a piece wherever it is. This is very useful for people's decks so they cannot pick the deck up and instead must draw cards, or if you're worried that something will get lost in the shuffle. You can also right-click on an item and go to Toggles, and this will actually let you change even more about the object. -If you want something underneath something else, tap U.

There are damage counters stored in the big box in the Gloomhaven mod. I don't know why they hid them, as they are the best way to track summon health, IMO. They are even scripted with a button, so you can left click to increase and right click to decrease the displayed number on the counter, if you'd rather not pile a bunch of ones up.

Some bonus info as it comes up: 4:00 - tapping Q and E without picking up an object also rotates that object in fixed intervals, the intervals toggled in the top bar (in this video, 15 degrees) 4:45 - with a stackable object selected, hovering the mouse over the target and then pressing G will group them into the object you are hovering over. Essentially your mouse determines the destination stack. 5:50 - a little tabletop sim lifehack: when you're pressing a number to draw a card or set a dice to a number, move your mouse off the object to "commit" that number, otherwise the program has a delay as it waits for you type a second or third digit 10:30 - you don't need to pick up the thing you want to copy, ctrl-c will copy the object you are highlighting

One of the most useful bonus objects which Matt didn't highlight is the Counter. It's in the same menu where he got the Calculator, Clock, and Tablet, but is probably the most useful item there, because it lets you replace "shuffling around various pseudo-physical objects" with "a display where you hit the + button to increase the number and the - button to decrease it." No more trying to drag tokens around, find a place to position them, count how many of them you have, and then put the right number of them back into some communal area when you spend them.

Collection of some useful commands: Zoom on Card: Mouse hover + Hold Alt Rotate zoom: Mouse over+Hold Alt+Q or E Magnify Area: Hold M Peak underneith card/object: Mouse hover+Alt+Shift (it will show an eye icon of your color on the peaked object so people will know you peaked) Draw a certain number of cards: Mouse hover deck + Numeric button showing the number of cards you want to draw. You can press buttons in quick succession to input numbers greater than 9. Example, pressing the button "1" followed by "2" will make you draw 12 cards. Hide hand: H Place card underneith deck: With card in hand+Hold right click+Drag towards deck Pick up multiple cards/object: With one card/object already in hand + Right click over object. Drop card/object: With one or more card(s)/object(s) in hand+hold alt+right click. Increase room count: Press ~ and type "host_max_players (number)" replace (number) with any number and hit enter. Press ~ again to close console. Note that there are only 10 colors in the game, but its good for spectators or games where the player doesn't have to interact with anything.

A couple of useful shortcuts that I didn’t see mentioned below or in the vid are : 1) clicking the middle mouse button on a three button mouse will zoom the camera in quite closely where the mouse in hovering! Clicking it again will zoom it back out again. 2) using the ‘m’ key turns the mouse into a magnifying glass which is great to see what is going on in a particular section of the board where the ‘alt’ zoom isn’t helpful.
@jodalsgaard57924 жыл бұрын
A few general tricks: setting the degree of rotation to 90* (clicking the 15* icon in the top right, that's the default) makes rotating objects more practically useful in most games, like for tapping cards in Gloomhaven. Also setting the lift height to 0 (by clicking the guy with the weight) makes it easier to control where dragged objects are placed (useful for controlling exactly where objects are dropped on the table, for placing map tiles etc.) For bigger games with a lot going on you can ping other players with the Tab button, that'll make a sound and bring up a little arrow pointing wherever your mouse is. Generally fun to mess around in, but yes, very janky!

Good tip for teaching games: Pressing tab will “ping” your mouse cursor location so that everyone is looking at the same thing. Also holding down tab will create a ruler from your mouses location to where you first pressed tab. This lets you draw temporary lines from one thing to another to help show where things go and stuff like that!

I am often surprised by how little people know of TTS. The things I most often am asked are: Highlight a n object with your Cursor and hold [Alt] to Magnify it. Then, hold [Shift] simultaneously with [Alt] to Peek at the other side of the object. Also, Pick up a Card with LC, Then simultaneously hold RC to press the Card against the Table. Then, you can slide the pressed down card under a Deck to place it on the bottom.

I've been experimenting with scripting in Tabletop Simulator. It's important to note that most of the games available on the Steam Workshop are unofficial. This means the quality can vary dramatically. In some games undoing will work fine, in others it will destroy your game. Some games will work really smoothly while others will be very janky. I'd advise starting with simple card or board game (like ludo or uno) to get used to it first. If you want to play something complex, that might take several hours, have a play with it first. See what breaks, test the undo and see what is automated and what isn't (some games like Ticket to Ride have a score around the edge of the board that is automatically updated as you play by the game spookily moving the counters for you. It's best to know this beforehand so you don't get frustrated by things moving outside of your control). There's also a huge grey area over the legality of these games, especially as many just reuse other people's artwork with acknowledgement or payment. There's an interesting article here about it: www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/06/11/tabletop-simulator-mods-copyright/

A great tip I don't see anyone utilize, but is great for doing a game like Patchwork, is utilizing the Picture-In-Picture (PIP). Right click on something that isn't an object to bring up a context menu and click on Picture in Picture. This loads a separate camera that's copying your main view. Resize that window and zoom your main camera to a view you want to "lock", and then in the PIP window press the Lock icon. I just added a bunch of random panoramic images. It can take pretty much any picture you throw at it. Chinese movie theater? Fancy restroom? Play board games wherever!

Another tip is you can CTRL+Left-click to select multiple objects at once. This is helpful for dice games when re-rolling dice, for instance.

A really useful keyboard shortcut with my group is tapping the tab key. It pings a part of the table for everyone, so we can all ask "What is this thing?" and point, rather than having to describe it or play hunt the cursor.

Thanks for this. My group have been continuing our Gloomhaven campaign since isolation started but I still picked up a few tricks. I think it's worth mentioning that Tabletopia is much simpler and has far better UI. If you want to play boardgames with friends that don't play video games, Tabletopia is a great option. The selection of games is more limited than TTS, but there is still plenty of choice. The number one feature though is that you can send someone a link to your game and they can play it in the web browser without installing anything or paying anything. If you're hosting you will probably want a paid subscription, but most games have a free mode so you can get by without.

You can flip by pressing the middle mouse button if you find that easier. There's a console command to make the game work on two screens. Also you can set pre sets for where your camera is located. That way you don't have to faf about dragging the screen about all the time.
@Ad3tr4 жыл бұрын
I feel like some people are missing the point a little. This is a simulation program, meaning that you can just scan in objects and then there is a single set of physical rules for all games. Many games have scripts on top of that, but many don't. If you learn the basics of using this, you know how to play almost every game. And it has VR functionality and a really wide open matchmaking system that help it out a lot.

speaking of varying degrees u can change the angle of rotation when using q and e top right

Yeah, for those who play games that involve turning cards sideways to "tap" them, either for mana or attacking etc, 90 degrees works quite well.

I see a lot of people sharing tips for using tabletop, but it also seems interesting to me to share a list of well scripted games that can be found there (in no particular order) : > War of Whispers > Twilight Imperium > Root > Gloomhaven > Carcassonne > Catan > 7 Wonders > 7 Wonders duel > Chakra > Concept > Betrayal at the House on the Hill > Azul > Village > Dixit > Saboteur > Treasure Island > Nemesis > Battlelore > Splendor > Keyforge > Space Alert > Androïd Netrunner And so much more...

It has come up in the comments but bears repeating; L locks and unlocks objects. If you lock a deck of cards you can still draw one card with the mouse but you can't accidentally pick up the whole deck. Extremely useful.

The one thing I feel you missed is the TAB button. Once quick for an arrow, good when discussing and wanting people to pay attention to someting. Holding tab makes you draw a line, good for when discussing line of sight or when talking about hey I think Im going to go over there in this way.

oh also drawing (dropping) the bottom card of a deck. Lift it like normal then hold alt and right click to drop bottom card (good for pandemic ;) )

Its a super important tool. Make sure you use it about 10 minutes before final scoring. Bonus points if playing a 2-4 hour game. Now the downside is, that you will have to look for new friends after covid lockdown.

This will likely be buried but what the hey! I'm a game dev student and I published my very first board game on tabletop simulator. I would love for anyone to give it a try, and if you have feedback by all means. The name of the game on the Steam Workshop is called DigBoys - you play as competing museums, sending out archaeologists and other experts to digsites to dig up and discover lost treasures of the world. The player who has the most valuable collection in their museum at the end is the winner of DigBoys.

I bought this hoping to use it, but aside from one friend, this app would be too much for most of the people I play games with, which is unfortunately, but I definitely see it being amazing for people who do have friends/groups that are willing to learn and use the app.
@mahna_mahna4 жыл бұрын
The app design approach is really "by a certain kind of person, for a certain kind of person." It definitely limits the appeal.
