Nice tutorial, I only found the CL grid to be useful for pulling up the brightness of darker color, but now I know that I can also use it to change saturation of individual color on brighter color

Thank you for the explanation! Looking forward to the next part… Still confused about the abbreviations used in the program, like „A/B“ and „C/L“, even though I do (now) know about the possibilities behind them.

Thanks Sebastian! The names truly are pretty obscure. I think the C/L references Chroma (sort of like saturation)/Luminance (brightness and darkness), which is what the grid controls. The A/B grid seems even more obscure. I’ve been told it references the A and B channels in the LAB color space, but I’m really not sure why that would be. The C/L makes much more sense to me. I’m glad the video was useful!

Thanks for the examples for using the C/L grid. Especially enjoyed the extra tips for fine tuning the saturation and lightness of the selected colors. Looking forward to next week's tutorial.

Thanks Shane! Next week I am into to delve into the Channel Mixer 😳. I also have a non -3DLC video coming out this week about winter photography you might enjoy. Based on my views it doesn’t seem like that many people are interested in 3DLC. But actually I’m learning a ton more just researching and making the videos.

Thank you Howard, very useful. In my short time using 3DLC I typically skip the C/L grid and go to curves after A/B. I don’t find this grid as intuitive as the others and felt that I could get the adjustments I wanted in A/B or curves. I plan to play around with C/L more and see what results I get. At the very least it is fun software to play!

Thanks Tim. Definitely play around with it. I find that I use the AB grid for more marked color changes and then the CL to fine tune them. But the software is fun to play with and there are likely several ways to get to the same result. On Christmas Day I’m releasing a video on the channel mixer. Talk about playing around! Lots of cool effects you can get playing in that tab! I’m really glad you are finding these useful.

I really like what you are doing here, however most of it is in broad strokes. I'm sure landscaper and architect photographers could really reap the bennies of this software. Have you used this for portrait photography? removing red cheeks, skin softening, smoke color, etc. Could you do a color grade on and environmental portrait?

Thanks Donald! It is really pretty broad strokes as it’s such different software that I wanted people to be able to get the basics down. I was thinking that in the series after the basics I might try some whole videos on grading an image. Was even wondering how you do a live stream as I’ve never done that and maybe grade while live? However I’ve never done portraits to be honest. Only landscape and nature for the most part. But perhaps once I get past the basics I could, for example, try color grading a portrait that someone let me use for the video (giving them prominent credit for the photo of course). Let me know if you had one you might want me to try with in the future?? Also I do some color grading in next weeks video….

@@howardgrillphotography2280 I can give you an environmental photo with a model and smoke. I’m going to buy the software this week. I’m always using curves, layers, and masks to accomplish what you do? But much more work.

@@donaldhealer9954 thanks Donald. I use Photoshop adjustment layers etc in my workflow as well as 3DLC. I think they compliment each other. I’d love it if you could let me use a photo and see what I could do with it as I usually don’t work with them. Will be a few more weeks at least until I’m there though. Would certainly make sure to give you credit for the image.

Can you edit pre-existing luts? Like say I have a lot that I really like, can I load it in there and all of those grids and everything already be filled out and editable?

I really wish 3D Lut reator had a normal hue specific luminosity adjustment. It seems impossible so far as I can tell to darken *only* red hues, for example.
@howardgrillphotography2280
@howardgrillphotography2280 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon. If I am understanding your question correctly….you can go to the C/L grid and using the eye dropper choose the hue you would like, then select the portion of that hue you would like on the grid and pull it down to darken any specific hue. Let me know if that’s not what you meant!
@RebeccaMorningstar
@RebeccaMorningstar 2 жыл бұрын
@@howardgrillphotography2280 The problem is that it doesn't affect *only* the chosen hue. What I mean is a hue specific luminosity adjustment in the manner of an HSL slider in programs like luminar, lightroom, etc. Granted I find the C/L panel to be quite useful in achieving nice effects in its own right
@howardgrillphotography2280
@howardgrillphotography2280 2 жыл бұрын
@@RebeccaMorningstar I see what you mean. It actually is more specific than choosing one specific hue. I will ve to look through some of the sliders and see if there is a way to do that.

@@howardgrillphotography2280 No worries! I bought this software a while back ( actually in the hopes of deconstructing 3rd Party Luts to learn what it was they're doing, but was a bit misled) and I've been waiting for someone to make tutorials that I can actually follow without pulling my hair out! I'll be recommending your channel to anyone wanting to learn the power of this software.
