You never HAVE to use it at all. Most babies aren’t that bothered - the preference for “facing away” generally comes from us as the carrying adult. However, IF you would like to use it, by around 10-12m they’re generally too big to use this position as they’re legs are so long that their weight pulls down & away from you, which makes them feel heavier. After that, a nice high back carry is usually more comfortable than facing away. I hope that helps.
