Using the GoPro Audio Adapter with the HERO 8 camera - ULANZI G8-7 Door

In this episode I'll explain how to best use the GoPro Audio Adapter on the HERO 8 camera. Unlike the HERO 5/6/7, the 8 has only one door that exposes both the battery and the USB port. You can take it off and plug the adapter in just fine, but the implication is of course that the battery might fall out during filming. That's some terrible design there, GoPro!
You can either remove the door and battery completely, then use an external power pack to avoid power interruptions from a lose battery, or you can use a third party door from ULANZI instead.

Ive seen a side door attachment on another video that clips into place. Would the go pro draw power from the battery and usb if i use external power too? or just the powerbank.

Just from the power bank when it’s attached. You can remove the battery completely. I recommend something with an output power of 2A or higher.

As for now - if you want to use an external microphone and don't have the audio adapter yet - I think the (now available) GoPro Media Mod is the way to go since this one also has built-in a microphone input and this without a hangig down adapter, so it kills two birds with one stone.

It’s there for power so you can use a mic and external power source at the same time. This is ideal for longer recordings, during which the battery would otherwise run out. I don’t know if it can take an additional mic input through the USB on the adapter.

I don't think it will. GoPro have a proprietary A/D converter in this box and in the Media Mod. USB mics are not recognised as external input sources.

I have a question, because what I am finding is that I odered the Pro 3.5mm mic adapter from GoPro. I have a Hero 8 Black and on the box it says it is for the Hero 8 Black, 7 Black, 6 Black and 5 Black. I plug it in, and plug my TRS powered mic in.... and nothing. I have tried changing the preferences from Standard to Powered to Line in. I have also tried using raw and non-raw audio in the other settings. I have tested with both the TRS powered mic as well as a TRRS non powered mic. Nothing.... So I'm at a loss. I did see a video where they said the USB port is actually not meant for power passthrough but for a USB mic to plug in to but most USB mics use Micro USB to USB Type-A Not many use Type-C to Type-C. I'm sure I could get a cable for Micro USB to USB Type-C. But that seems like a lot extra just to get a mic to work on what is supposed to be a plug and play solution.

Hi Jonathan, those mic to USB adapters used to work on the HERO 4 and earlier. Essentially the electronics to convert analogue audio to a digital signal was done inside the camera, but since the HERO 5 GoPro have to do this eternally (hence the adapter is so big). I believe they even apply a digital signature to the feed, hence a regular mic to USB adapter won't work in this case. My adapter works fine on the HERO 5 and HERO 8, but I need a TRRS to TRS converter to make it work. It sounds like neither mic with neither setting is working for you. If the mic I've linked to in the description is still available, I'd try it with that - you'll get the mic and the adapter you need to at least try it out. If that also doesn't work, your camera or the adapter might be faulty.

Not really I'm afraid. I'd test the setup with another device (say a phone or some other audio recorder). It it's working, then it's either incompatible with the GoPro adapter, or there's a hardware issue somewhere. I'd also check the GoPro setup with another mic and see if you can get it working, just to eliminate where the issue might creep in. It's trial and error I'm afraid. Good luck!

I have media mod for my hero 8 and a trs splitter with trs mics. So I can connect two mics one to hear me and one to hear my friends through my motorcycle helmet Cardo when I connect both at same time I don't pick up any audio just like some low static. Like if my mic was muted but one at a time everything is fine tried one at a time directly to gopro and one at a time on splitter both worked one at a time with no problems

How do I attach the adapter to my helmet? I have really strong Velcro but it will not stick properly to the adapter I have tried several types of tapes and double sided including VHB. I’m lost to think GoPro has not thought of this

You're right there! I believe Ulanzi have a little box that has the camera on the top, and the adapter slots in underneath. It's a simple holder, but looks like it could do the trick. Still, it would be more bulk to mount on your helmet. Alternatively get a USB extension from the camera and use the adapter at the end of it, so it doesn't have to be on your helmet and it can stay in your pocket. GoPro's answer would probably be "buy the HERO 8/9/10 with the Media Mod" but that's not a real solution either.

Ah yes, previous GoPros had a mini HDMI out. The HERO 8 no longer has that. They’ve released the Media Mod, which is like a frame that goes around the camera. It adds a 3.5mm audio jack and a mini HDMI output, sadly you’ll have to buy it at an overpriced $80 if you need a monitor output.

I guess it depends on your circumstances; and how many other GoPros you have. I already had the adapter, and when I bought mine it was only $30. So for me the door was way cheaper than to get the mod. Also, the mod for the 8 doesn’t work for the 9 and vice versa, while the adapter works on any GoPro 5-9.

I ride my motorcycle with gopros attached to bike and helment. I use the ulaniz door on my Gopro Hero 8's. I also use Ulanzi's protective housing. Since the Gopro Hero 8's lens is very difficult to remove, I protect it with the metal case which has a screw type slot over the lens that accepts lens filters. I use UV Filter to protect the Gopro lens. One final note - for some reason, external microphones only work after the gopro is turned on, then the mic is inserted into the mic adapter. If the mic is connected first, then the gorpro 8 is turned on the sound fades in and out or does not work at all. This never happens with my 2 Gopro hero 7's. Hmmm...

I don't think there is an internal audio level menu in the GoPro. The other piece I'm referring to is the GoPro Media Mod, made by GoPro. It's not worth it in my opinion, although it does expose a mic input and HDMI. It also has an integrated front facing mic, but the quality is just as good/bad as the built-in one. GoPro should supply that alternate battery door like the Ulanzi for free. That's a serious design flaw by GoPro where you have to remove the battery door to access the USB-C port. My Hero 4 was so much simpler to use. Did you ever find a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that works or is the GoPro Audio adapter the only option? For motorsports activities, that seems so bulky and I'm concerned that the movement of the adapter is going to ruin the USB-C port, in addition to wondering how to secure that adapter down. Thanks for the videos, most helpful. Oh - better yet, they should just add a 3.5 mm TRS or TRRS port directly in the camera!

All I can suggest is to try a TRS and a TRRS input from your mic. If neither works, with either setting in the menu, then I don’t know. My adapter works fine on the HERO 8.

Can’t say that I have. Could it be that awkward numbering system if the clips? Perhaps the footage is there, just not in the right order. I always get confused with clips that span files and the file names they get. I try to clean out the memory card after every ride, that keeps my confusion to a minimum.

Another problem with the Hero 8 is that the lens cover is more difficult to remove. I motovolg with two Hero 7 Blacks and both have had a lens cover crack. The lens cover on 7's can be twisted off. To get the 8's lens cover off requiers a heat gun and pry tool.

Hi Robb, this was filmed with two web cams simultaneously and captured in OBS. I use a Stream Deck to switch live between scenes, and the picture-in-picture scene is setup with one camera as full screen, then the other one cropped to a circle with a mask. It is splash water proof I believe, the whole box and cable is made of one big piece of rubber. However, because the GoPro door needs to be removed, there’s an exposed bit at the camera that will not be waterproof. Small drops of rain are not a problem, but heavy rain will be an issue.

Nah, there’s a special digitally signed analogue to digital converter in the GoPro adapter, the cheaper generic versions don’t have that and they won’t work with GoPros. In earlier models that A/D converter was inside the camera, but since the HERO 5 and above they’ve externalised that and an overpriced adapter is necessary.

Sadly not, the moment you change the door it will no longer be water proof. Occasional rain drops probably won't hurt, but don't submerge it with the Ulanzi door.

I set up my GoPro Hero 8 Black with the GoPro audio adapter and Rode VideoMicro external mic. I have been getting horrrrrendous audio feedback on my clips. Looked at some forums and reached out to folks and found out that supposedly the audio adapter is not compatible with the Hero 8 Black and you can only use the media mod with this model. Have you, or anyone else here, experienced this too?

Have you found a solution? I thought it was odd the video said the mic adaptor works but didn't actually do an audio test. If it works it's the mics on the GoPro that's picking up the sound. This vid sounds more like an Ulanzi door infomercial.

@@ongmoto Yeah I have found a solution. There are actually two options for the audio input once an external mic is hooked up: Standard Mic and Standard Mic +. I must have had it on Standard Mic + and it caused terrrrrrible sounding feedback. The external works fine on Standard Mic setting.

GoPro make this Media Mod, that’s kind of like a cage with audio adapter built in. One of my viewers has made a holder in Blender and 3D printed it - that’s a neat solution. But nothing official for this regular adapter as far as I know.

I must say I've not had issues with it on my HERO 8 or my HERO 5. Seems to work just fine, although out of habit I never use the Quick Capture function (i.e. press record when the camera is switched off, it will turn it on and start recording). There once was an issue with the camera not recording via the adaptor with Quick Capture, apparently it has been fixed but I still don't use it. So I plug in my adaptor, with microphone, switch on the camera, then start recording.

@@marlomarteja3007 I already found the answer, it's not allowing to use the mic while you're recording and charging at the same time, the adapter is just one way, if you want to use the mic in the adapter, you should stop pluging the charger as well.

Yes that’s right, either the door open there’s no more waterproofing. Same goes for the Ulanzi door, it keeps the battery in place but water can enter through the hole it makes for the adapter.

Yes it's the same one, the only have one version of this adapter. It's different with the Mods, as the cameras have different dimensions, but this adapter works on all GoPro HERO models that accept external audio (Black models).

I don't think there is. GoPro have some kind of digital signature in this thing that's proprietary, so no third party manufacturer has been able to copy it as far as I know. And yes... don't get a Media Mod! I have one, been meaning to post a review for a while, but essentially that thing is not ready for prime time. While it works, it just feels like it's not quite thought through. It does work just like the Mic Adapter though, but it's HERO 8 (and perhaps above) only. A bit flimsy too.

I remember buying the HERO 8 Media Mod. It's awful - I never use it. I've not had any connection issues during testing, but not being able to easily remove the battery and/or SD card makes the Media Mod a non-starter for me. I do remember that the HERO 9 and a different version of the Media Mod, I'm not sure if it's the same for the 10. I'm mentioning this because it could be that you have the wrong version of the Media Mod that's made for a different camera. I have no idea how to tell them apart as I've not tried out any of the Media Mods that came out after the HERO 8, but it's something to investigate.

The adapter itself looks like it’s made of rugged rubber and good against a drip of rain or two, but you have to remove the small GoPro door to attach it. As such, your setup is not waterproof against heavy rain and submersion in water. Light rain on my bicycle I find is no problem, but heavy rain on a motorbike is.

No that’s not the case. With this adapter you can charge and use an external 3.5mm input at the same time. Muting may be caused by either Quick Capture (avoid it if you can), or the wrong input type. Mine likes TRS rather than TRRS, other users report the opposite. Lastly, there’s the type of input you set in the menu. For something like a mixer output, use line-in.

GoPro just keeps getting worse and worse and worse with their afterthoughts. Seems like everything they give us with every new generation of camera, they take away some very important feature, but then again, we keep buying them... This video was insanely helpful though, almost returned my Hero8 but opted to go for the Ulanzi door which was thankfully available and in stock on Amazon. Thanks for making this video!

What a daft design flaw by Gopro. I'll wait for a sensibly designed Gopro 9 which will HOPEFULLY have a weather proof or even better, a water proof adaptor plug cover. The thought that you would need to stick Duck tape over it to make £300 state of the art outdoor camera usable for the outdoors.... you can't believe it!

I think I'm gonna have to go with the Dji Osmo action. The ergos of the Hero8 are just too much of pain in ass the at this point. I'd have to put a couple hundred dollars into adapters and accessories to make it work for my helmet setup, even then, the end result is a compromise.

The battery doesn't even need to fall out to lose connection, it only needs to shift about 1mm and you lose power, which is really stupid design. I think this is such a badly designed GoPro. 10steps forward and 5 steps back for GoPro. Having the two doors was much more sensible.

If that's the case, I'd say you have a faulty adapter or there's something wrong with your GoPro. Even without any source connected, the menu should open up. I'd get in touch with GoPro and see if they can help.

The WP Guru adaptor now works in another GP. GP sucks at fixing anything or admitting fault with anything. It’ll take a year to resolve it. This GP also doesn’t turn off after you click and hold the button and it make the beeps that it’s supposed to turn off.

I've never had problems with the previous generations, and I'm hoping it'll stay that way.
