Thanks for letting me know that I could use my old Vive! I was about to flash my only 2 steam controller dongles (making the controllers unusable). WRT the original G2 controllers, I've had my G2 now for about 3 days. While I did not experience anything as bad as what you recorded, I feel like the controllers are much worse than Sebastian claims. Setting aside the fact that there are no capacitive sensors, the halos are too large and get in the way, and that the batteries last 6 hours on a good day, I feel as though the new controller tracking is basically in beta stage. I picked up a cheap lenovo explorer several years ago. The tracking was not great originally, but they made massive improvements. By the time that Alyx was released, they were almost on par with the oculus controllers in terms of accuracy and reliability. I feel as though the G2 controllers are significantly worse in those areas. The tracking is mostly okay, but the G2 just randomly seems to lose tracking for no discernable reason. The most common times are when the controllers are down by my waste, but this could happen at any moment in any position. While looking at my controllers or raising my hands always fixed the issue nearly instantly, I was never able to actually reproduce the issue reliably. It seemed to be largely random. I never had this issue with the original WMR controllers (with half the cameras no less). The fact that all 4 cameras point downward makes this behavior even more curious, as downward is when it loses tracking most often. My suspicion is that, over time, Microsoft will fix most of these issues, but it doesn't seem production ready at all right now. As for the headset itself, It's a noticeable upgrade from the Index for playing SIM games such as DCS world, Squadrons, and even a heavily modded SkyrimVR. For less photo-realistic games such as Half-Life Alyx, Phasmophobia, etc. Given the higher refresh rate, FOV, and incredibly comfortable controllers, I feel like the overall experience of the Valve Index is still arguably better for most non-sim games even a year after it was released. As a summary though, I feel that HP did an amazing job with their headset. They had an ambitious initial release, and they learned from their original failures. In the end, they did their part to deliver some amazing hardware. It's a shame that they had to partner with Microsoft to implement inside-out tracking. I understand why they did it. Microsoft is the only company licensing their inside-out tracking to 3rd parties. That being said, basically every aspect of the package that came from the HP and Valve side are best in class. Basically every Microsoft-related aspect of the headset is a huge disappointment, from the controllers, to a dozen or so constant annoyances that come with having to deal with the WMR portal. I really hope that they spend the time to improve all of this.

I've had my G2 for 2 weeks now, its a great headset for Simm racing/flying and thats what i bought it for Elite Dangerous, I don't know if its worth to invest in the satellites and controllers, the satellites are a 150.00 each. I'd pay 250.00 for the knuckles but the satellites are the deal braker.

Well, Valve and HP did work together to make the G2. G2 is more like an Index's little brother with better vision. VR is a niche market so they both win. Either way VR moving forward is a win for the people.

Wow, I just realized that, the reverb g2 is a perfect upgrade for all vive users, since they can use both the controllers, the vive, and the basestations. Perfect tracking, 4k res, and really easy index controllers upgrade in the future if wanted.

my G2 just showed up in the mail today. i'm used to WMR tracking since my headset has been a Samsung Odyssey for a few years now. i'm probably not going to run out and get index parts, but the cost to get index controllers and base stations wouldn't be that big of a deal. i just hope in the next couple years Valve will update their current headset in the Index kit. then i would just get that for my house and keep the G2 so i can use it in different rooms of my house or take it over to friends houses to let them play it with my laptop.

I remember using open vr space calibrator when I was doing trackers with my Rift CV1. It worked, but I did prefer not having to have oculus open when playing steam games once I got the vive. I was thinking of doing this until I remembered it was windows mixed reality and I'd have to combine playspaces. I have everything except the g2. Have the Knuckles, vive base stations, watchman dongles (though I could just use the vive)

You can pin SteamVR to a wall inside the WMR house. You can also just double click SteamVR directly, it will automatically launch WMR, then automatically launch SteamVR, essentially bypassing the WMR house. When you exit your game, you'll return to the WMR house, not the Steam house.

I'm a flight simmer so I don't think I'll invest in this unless a sim comes out with excellent motion controller support. It's very exciting to see you get amp'd up on fixing something I don't really care about and now loving the RG2 for what I do care about. Not sure you will see this 7 months later, but I'll shoot my shot. You're right, the game does not look that good at all. This is because Population One is 1: a competitive multiplayer game in which high framerates are important (turning down visual quality is the main way this is achieved) 2: it is cross-platform with pc vr and quest platforms, the latter are not as powerful computationally as pc's.

I have done this as well. I did pull off the speakers on the HP making it lighter and use Power Beat Pro for the audio. That and Dolby ATMOS app (which you have to pay for) for headphones you can't really beat it. YES the cost is insane, but it really changes the enjoyment.

I dont understand.... I have the Index knuckles paired with the Original HTC vive... no additional software needed... Why I need an additional software to make the knuckles work with the HP Reverb G2? the knuckles are connected to the Basestations, not the headset.. the headset is a screen with its own directional position... what am I missing?.. Can you use original vive controllers? Ive looked online and cant seem to find someone whose tried. I have the original vive and now with the reverb G2 i wanna upgrade, the jump in quality and great price are just too good to pass up on but ive also seen the tracking isn't the best, ive been playing beat saber expert + everyday as part of my daily workout its very fun so accurate tracking is important to me and i love the vive tracking and never really had issues other than minor things so i would love to basically just swap the vive headset for the G2 and keep the vive tracking. Is that possible?

I am Using the same setup atm and pro tip is: if you have htc tracker puck calibrate with that in the center of hp reverb controller it seems have calibrated to me almost perfect (when i did with index controller it was always off) it seems i had multiple motherboards now that tracking gets jacked up random issues i had to get a dedicated usb card to fix those.

Help? This is not working for me. = ( Reverb G2 already set up, I disconnect the G2 from the displayport connection. I plug in the Vive and launch Steam VR. Index controllers are paired with the Vive, working great. (Ooh, nice colors Vive!) I exit SteamVR, unplug the Vive HDMI from the displayport. I connect the G2 to the displayport. Launch SteamVR. Base stations do not wake up. I go to SteamVR settings / Devices / Bluetooth. "Bluetooth is not available". The only time bluetooth is available and the base stations wake up, and the Index controllers work is when the Vive HMD is pluggled into the displayport (which defeats the purpose, of course!). When the Vive HMD is not plugged into the displayport (just USB) the green led light on the Vive is still on... but bluetooth is not available and I can't wake up the base stations to track the Index controllers. Thank you!!!

Just an FYI in the past 3 months valve has had around 30 patent filings related to VR that were granted. A year before the valve index released the same thing happened, where patents they had applied for years prior, were all granted around the same date. Valve index 2.0 perhaps sometime next year?

Great video Eric. You could have mentioned though that the Knuckles won't trigger thr WMR Guardian, which may be an issue for most peopel. With OVRAS you can disable the WMR Guardian and enable Steam Chaperone instead.

I think you just need the breakout box once it is setup. I have not tried with my HTC equipment yet but rather tried the tracker dongles...Perfect, and then decided to try the index headset itself without DP plugged in, and it worked perfectly. In this setup, I can go between either and only have to plug in the DP for the index to change. Definitely turned my initial disappointment into enthusiasm for the G2. It would be great to have just put some lighthouse trackers in the headset and radio for controllers. Perhaps MS would not kick their money in then, but one can hope.

My letter to HP Hello my name is Miguel and I pre-ordered the G2 back in May. I jumped on wanting this headset because I was blown away at what the first G1 had to offer. Since having received my G2 I continue to have issues with video not coming on unless I disconnect and reconnect the main cable a couple of times. That's the plug, that plugs into the "headset" "not" the back of the computer. Also the other annoying issue is that the right ear speaker cuts in and out whenever I touch it or move my head. I've tried troubleshooting over the phone and I was told that a new cable and new speakers are going to be sent out to me. The only emails I keep getting are emails telling me that the parts are on backorder. For a new headset that I ordered so many months ago this is really frustrating, especially coming from such a big name company, both HP & Valve. At this point I don't think it's fair that I should have to fix these issues myself. Your company is talking about un-attaching the current speakers and installing the new ones myself. This is ridiculous for something I just received! I would like to have a new headset sent out to me to replace this lemon of a headset I have received. SAD

I have the same Setup G2+Index Controller+Basestations but i have also a self modded thinner Foam Cover that Increases the Fov alot while still super comfortable (dont know why Hp didnt think about that because it even Increase the already High Immersion even more. Thats the Ultimate VR Setup right now.

I really want to buy a G2, as I own an index, but rumors are Valve is working on sourcing more plentiful suppliers for their index, basically means an index 1.5/2 is in the works. Plus all the patents. I feel that before the end of 2021 we will hear of a new Index hmd, and I'm sure it will have wide fov, 144hz, 2160p displays. Probably no updates/minor revisions to controllers, and base stations are fine. So its basically just an HMD order for $600. Definitely a no brainer.. I think I can put up with my index for that long.

@@AdityaPrasad007 yes I got it! Unfortunately I started a new job and have relocated and have an apartment full of boxes still. I can only give my impression from a couple of times using it. Of course the display and resolution look good. Sim racing looks good and once I lowered the render resolution a bit it was smooth with my 2080 Ti. Visually it's the best headset I've used (I have 7 other VR headsets). FOV for me is about in par with most other headsets and noticably behind the Valve Index. I'm going to try and mod it to increase FOV. Tracing is ok for most things but tried long bow in The Lab and did have some tracing issues, but the game did look really good. It reminded me of the issues I had with the Odyssey+ tracking when I first got it. Oddly enough last time I tried the Odyssey+ it seem much improved. I'll have to test now before making a final analysis, but I'll likely not be using it for shooting or bow and arrow games. So far, I'll have to agree with those who say tracking isn't ideal for shooters and fast paced games, but great for Sims and games games where fast precise tracking isn't a priority. But this is just my preliminary observations from my initial trials a few months back.

Still on G2 and Index Controllers. Even now no upgrades seem to be good enough to move past this setup for me. Crystal, Q3 PSVR2 PC, 8kX, Pico4, Beyond, XR-3, Sonmium, .... all too many compromises or shortcomings in 1 way or another such that spending $$$ on an upgrade just doesn't make sense. All kinds of side grades and less comfortable or super expensive options but NOTHING that ALL AROUND Beats the G2 for less than $1000 AND is comfortable. It's been YEARS

So I've got the HTC Vive and Index, but I don't really get why you needed to plug in the HTC Vive. Why not just plug in the index?

No. The inside-out tracking of the G2 is specifically designed around the stock controllers it comes with. To use different controllers, the only option is to use base-station tracked controllers in SteamVR, which the Index Knuckles are the undisputed gold standard for that platform.

yeah man, it think your room is the reason why you were having terrible tracking with the reverb g2. The dim lights coming from different directions, with that ivy light setup alone is enough to most likely fuck with the tracking.

Why do you need the base stations? Looking at buying the G2 as I like the good picture. I'm new to VR and not sure if its any good using it in stuff like swordsman vr. But mostly car and flight sums.

Not true at all do your research. finger tracking, resolution, base station tracking, native steam vr support, Built in amazing headphones, and ability to get a haptic suit and add ons natively

Half Life Alex in the G2 looks too damn real. My 9 year old niece refused to play games on my PlayStation once she tried VR. I asked her why she wants to play VR instead of the PlayStation and she said “Because it’s like you’re in the game instead of playing the game “ Her reaction put a smile on my face

This is awesome news cause I have an og vive and I was looking to upgrade to the reverb g2, so now the only thing I have to buy is the reverb g2 and the controllers themselves. But question, how much of this process has to be set up each time? Do I have to leave both my vive and reverb g2 plugged in to my computer forever? Is this only first time set up and next time I want to jump into vr, I can just turn on my index controllers and it will automatically route to my reverb g2?

I'm in your same situation, I have the Vive laying around and Im waiting for my G2. From what I can tell, the old Vive needs to remain plugged in whenever you want to use the Knuckles controllers since it acts as a receiver for them. As for everything else, one you have the software and calibration complete, the Reverb and Knuckles controllers should work like normal, and you shouldn't need the HP controllers except for small use cases.
