How to use the map in Stranded Deep to NAVIGATE !

I have found it useful that when you visit a new island that you put the point of the tent towards the direction your home island is so that way if you see the tent you know to go the direction it is pointing. This will help if you are trying to get the achievement for beating the game with no compass

@@wabba_my_jack6641 I build the shelter on the island, pointed the tip of it toward HOME, and then use the label maker to change the name of the shelter with the a number, name, and compass points.

On every new island the first thing I do is put a shelter down facing towards my home island, and as an additional marker, I throw a spear in the sand pointed towards my home island, so no matter what island I'm on, I know exactly which way home is.

🤣I’m an older pc player. We always used pen and paper. This was well before internet and you really just had to figure it out. I played with my grandma and her sister and they taught me all this. First thing I did on stranded deep was draw a map on graph paper based on the title screen map. North being actually in the corner of the map. It made my play through fairly easy. I did utilize the compass though. I just laid a coin on my hand drawn map for the island I was currently visiting.

One I’ve found on console that if you start out at the first on the map, if you spot the abandoned ship, that is your northern way. From there on you can use that ship as a reference to guide yourself back to your island when venturing out for long periods of time and without using your compass as it’s one less item to have to take up space in inventory.

for me how i know i been to a island its becouse i make a small camp at every island i go to it really does not take that much material to make and if i find that i need those material for something i can all way go back and taken down that camp. and with a camp on islands i can make saves points on those islands and be able to sleep. but before i leave my main island i make sure i do top off meaning i eat seomthing to fill my food bar and my water bar and i never leae the island untial my helth bar is full to.

So i just got this on the switch and it’s the most efficient way for me to play. My plan was to build a small shelter on each island. Also i was thinking about putting them on the most north side of the island i now have a raft with 4 shelves so now i can store 3 boxes on each. For me each box has 3 spots inside. So now I'm thinking about where "home" is. This video helped cuz i kept getting lost on my own...

My biggest joy in this game is to draw my own map just like I would do if I was in this situation in real life. The way I do it is at first to not look at the game map at all. Then, in game, as soon as I got all essential tasks done, like securing water, food etc, I can start exploring and make the map. I go to the center of the island I'm at and build a tall enough structure to stand on so I have free views in all directions. Standing on top of this I use the compass and take the bearings to the center of each island I can see from there. If I have the binoculars I can use them to better find the center of the islands and also find more distant islands. I put this down on paper, drawing my starting island in the middle of a new paper sheet and draw bearing lines from it to the islands I found this way. I use a protractor to get the bearings of these lines correctly. I do not know the length of these lines yet so I draw them a bit short for the moment. Now I get into a raft and sail straight at one of the islands. I sail straight for the center and I measure the exact time in seconds I use going there, accounting for any delays, then add just a few seconds as I did not sail exactly from or to the center of the two islands. If I use more than a minute, say 1 minute and 27 seconds, I still use seconds, in this example 87 seconds. Now I have the "length" between the centers of those two islands measured in seconds, this will work just fine. I draw 87 seconds as 8 cm and 7 mm on paper, if you use inches you will find your own way to convert seconds into inches and fractions I am sure. On the new island I do the same as on the first, from the center I take compass bearings to the center of all islands I can see from here and I take the time when I sail to the next island. Ok, so when I have done this several times I get very good data to draw a map with accurate placements of islands. There can be a few degrees and/or seconds of errors when doing cross observations between islands, but that is expected due to measuring errors and will not be big enough to ruin your map if you strive to be as accurate as possible in all measurements. When I have lots and lots of observations my map will look very cluttered, but I fix this by drawing a new map without all unnecessary observation data. Now the beauty of the completed map is that you can go from any island to any other island you don't even see in the horizon by just using the protractor and take the bearing you need to sail, and you can also get a good estimate how long that voyage will take. If the center of the island has a hill or something else you can't climb on top of you will have to make sure you stand on the line going through the centers of this island and the one you are observing, have your back towards the center of your island. This is important as not doing it this way you will give very big errors in your measurements. I am on PC and we have a big random map that makes this method very satisfying, before when the islands were placed in a grid with a new island just every 90 degrees from any other island and with fixed length between them it was less satisfying, but still fun. I hope the random maps will be implemented on consoles soon. One can argue that this can't be done in a real situation as the chances to find a protractor and a ruler is small. But both of these can be made using the sun, a watch, a compass, some string and a stick or two. A compass is divided into 360 degrees and is a useful aid in making a protractor. The sun combined with a watch and a large stick can help you find a bearing from a point to another. The ruler does NOT have to have cm or inches on it, you could make your own length dimension based on anything you have handy, like the width of a small stone for instance, 1 stone width can be 10 seconds for map making purposes (In real life it would be more sensible to use minutes instead of seconds). Not having paper can be a problem, but can be solved with other things to write on like sand, rocks, wood etc. If you don't have a pen or pencil use a nail, a small stone or something similar. I am sure I would be able to do this in real life if I had access to a watch and a compass, the rest I would have to improvise with. I ID all islands by numbering them. I use a spear as the number 1, a half coconut as 5, and any round (brown or yellow) as the number 10. This way island number 7 will be 1 half coconut and 2 spears, number 14 will be 1 round coconut and 4 spears, number 16 will be 1 round coconut, 1 half coconut and 1 stick, and so on. I try to put the coconuts in a place where they can't roll away from and not be moved by crabs, the sticks I throw into the sand next to the coconuts, that way I will find the numbering pile quicker when coming back to an earlier island. On my paper map I write down what I have done to each island and if I need to go back there later. Hope this was helpful for anyone, have fun being your own cartographer!!

@@GranddaddyGamer Yes, I would like to see that too, but I would like to fill in the bearings and distances manually, not just "discovering" places like in normal games with maps. I have emailed the developers a couple of times asking them to implement it. I also asked them to put binoculars with compass implemented into it like you can have in rl too (I have a pair). I've had no feedback from them so we will just have to wait and see. Maybe if more people ask for the same they will listen? I have never played the forest so I don't know how that works.

I used to play mostly on consoles before, but swapped to PC when I discovered that most games are better and also easier to mod on PC. Also in the future there will be many games that can be played only exclusively on just one console system, xbox or playstation, + on PC in most cases. So PC is the way from now on in my opinion.

Wood foundations are the best markers to show where you have visited. It only takes a hammer and four sticks to make one, and you can see it from very far away when you are on the water🎉

Use paper to draw your map. Carry a label maker on the raft When you get to an island Grab a container and place it out in the open. Preferably next to a fire and/ or water still Type on the container the name/number you want to call your island. Write it down Then you have logical references

Marking territory already farmed is nice. But low areas near the beach could be under water during storms. The trick is the bird trap. It is a tall yardarm thing that you can stick near the edge of the water on some rocks. It renders into the game from farther away than any other object, even the boulders and plants. The first thing you can see besides the ghost image of the islands themselves are the red containers and the bird traps.

I've got "lost" in this game by accidentally pointing my raft in the wrong direction home but I've never not been able to realise very quickly the island doesn't look like mine and change course immediately in the correct direction. The easiest way I found to know what direction im always going/returning was realising the map is a 5x5 grid, so if you build in the centre spawn island you ultimately can never get lost because you can find out roughly where you are the second you can't see any islands, you then know you're at 1 edge of the map so you just turn inwards and you'll always be within 1 island of your spawn and those islands are normally the most recognisable as they have the closest resources you regularly visit or your spawn build is visible.
