How to Use the Mattress Stitch for Side Seams | Crochet Tutorial

I show you how to use the mattress stitch to invisibly seam the sides of crochet fabric. The technique is similar to the traditional mattress stitch, but rather than sewing through the tops of the stitches, you work through the post of the stitches.
I cover 3 stitches: single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc). This is because the stitch heights are different, therefore seaming looks different for each stitch.

Thank you for this tutorial. I've watched several videos on the mattress stitch. I believe this is the only one that actually shows where in the stitches to place the needle. The other were vague and nondescript in where to put the needle. Your explanations and visuals were spot on. Oh..some of the other videos said to place your work right sides up when doing this stitch. Thank you again.

This tutorial is fantastic! It's tricky to stitch the sides of stitches without causing holes or weird patterns. This stitch and the tip to go through multiple loops is 10/10 perfect. Thank you for this video, and for covering multiple sized stitches! Your video was helpful for stitching slip stitch rows (I don't expect you to cover every stitch possible) to dc rows. Knowing where to best loop around the dc rows was helpful in figuring out my specific project.

Great job! Very clear verbal instructions. When you picked up your swathes to show exactly where to run the needle through a post was perfect! Good point to make on not splitting your yarn with your needle, I think this is the first tutorial I have heard mentioned this. People new to crochet and/or knitting may not know this. Very important. 👍
