Great video, as always. For years, even decades, I would hear guys say, "learn the CAGED System," and "target the chord tones," but I stayed with the minor Pentatonic/Blues scale and could never solo worth a crap. It always sounded the same, because it was. Then I finally woke up! When you learn that the major and minor Pentatonic scales use the same patterns, to target chord tones, and to know *and listen* to the chord changes, your soloing world will open up. It's so much better soloing when you *know* that what you're about to play will work, instead of just mostly guessing on where you can go.

I have to tell you my friend...I have been playing guitar for 30 years now. And of those 30 at least 20 of them I have played professionally. From Country, Rock, and Metal...I've played it all. And over the last few years I have been searching through vids and websites in search of something to knock me off of that 'plateau' that most musicians often hit. And about a month ago I found your channel and in that short period of time I am finally beginning to feel the crusty walls of the box I've been stuck in deteriorating and flaking away. Knowing cool licks is one thing...but 'understanding' what makes a lick cool is another. The combination of your personality, your teaching approach, and your caliber of playing is quite a recipe. I've heard you say before that, "If I would of known this stuff when I first started, there's no telling where I'd be now." And I'd like to second that notion. For a good 70% of what I've seen on your channel so far, I believe someone like me who's played for decades and someone who played 10 months could watch the same one and both walk away a better player. So I just want to say thank you for freely giving away all your secrets. God bless and here's to the guitar taking back it's crown back in 2018.

Best teacher on youtube. How come, you make it almost too easy to learn. Somehow you can explain everything the way, it's very practical and I can put it onto my playing and start to use this stuff almost right away. Just little practise and you are, if not good, but better to go. Thanks!

Nice lesson, Brett! However, from 3:28 to 4:00 I was a little confused about "3rd position" and mention of A minor. Instead, play only pentatonic pattern 5 starting at the 10th fret and that will give you the chord tones for the G chord, including the 3rd, plus the notes E and A. From pattern 5, go forward one pattern to pattern 1, and that will show that you are playing the notes for Em pentatonic which is the relative minor for G major, which is why this works. Now, you can (as you showed) play A minor pentatonic over a G chord, with the only difference between A minor and E minor pentatonic, is that you get the 4th and not the 3rd with the former, when viewing G as the root note. You can "inject" the 3rd in there, but it's just better to say you are playing E minor pentatonic instead of a mutated A minor pentatonic. Not that you used the word "mutated". ;-)

This thinking limits you. Try playing in G major starting from the A on the D string on the 12 fret. That will be the Dorian minor mode. Starting from C playing in G major will give Lydian major mode . Starting on D playing in G major will give you D Mixolydian major mode. Starting on E playing in a G major scale will give you E Aeolian relative minor to G major.

I'm late to the party on this video, but great lesson! Thinking about it as A minor pentatonic being the center and plugging in the "missing" notes from the other chords as they change made my playing instantly more musical than other ways I've learned or thought about modes. Thanks, man. Cheers!

Forgive me if this was said, as I have not read every comment. The chord progression is in the key of G. The second chord in G is Am and the second degree (mode) is Dorian. So, You could play G major, G maj pent, A Dorian (which is minor), or A min pent. When the C and D chords come around, you can play any of the above scales (because C and D are in G major), or play C maj pent over the C chord and D maj pent over the D chord (ala Hendrix). D Mixolydian will work too, as is is exactly the same notes as G major and A Dorian.

So you can add the thirds from the G, C and D chords to the Am pentatonic scale but only when you are on those chords in the progression right? Excellent lesson!

BRETT, Can you make a video about What "Chord Changes or Chord Progressions" can you play for each MODE? because when playing in all minor pentatonic box1-5, what chord changes or chord progressions do you use the dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian modes? I know steve vai and david gilmour use the lydian mode but they use a minor pentatonic box that is so many frets away from the root note which its kinda of like the same trick that you play a major pentatonic box 3 frets down they somehow play a lydian mode. Joe Satriani also does this lydian mode trick by using the Aeolian mode so many frets up or down but its the aeolian scale turns into the lydian mode. This trick is what Gilmour, Vai and Satriani do often. Try to figure it out because its using the aeolian natural minor scale just so many frets up or down using the minor pentatonic box which will turn into a lydian mode.

Brett, what happened at 7:52? You had just mentioned that you were going to play A minor pentatonic (and did), then would take it to three notes per string. However, when you played that scale you played F# not F natural. Were you thinking G here instead of A minor? :-) It could be you meant you were going to demonstrate A Dorian with 3 notes per string instead of just plain A minor.
@jimfuderer6384
@jimfuderer6384 7 жыл бұрын
He was playing A Minor . A Dorian minor mode, second mode of the G major scale .
@PE1978C
@PE1978C 7 жыл бұрын
Well, when one says, "A minor", without qualifying it, one assumes the natural minor, hence, F natural. Yes, I knew and indeed mentioned the Dorian mode above. Perhaps you missed my point about being specific? I know that Dorian is a minor mode, but it is not the Aeolian mode.

@jimfuderer6384
@jimfuderer6384 7 жыл бұрын
Calling out 1-4-5 (A-D-E) will change the way you will analyze your chords.A 1-4-5 in G would be G-C-D Keeping in the key of G using A as you root would be A Minor 2 , D Major 5, E Minor 6.

If anyone is confused about modes, this is essentially in G major, but it's key center is based around the second chord in the scale, Am. Dorian mode. So it's really Am for all intents and purposes. The thing to remember is that modes aren't really about scales more about tonal centers and where the music resolves to.
