Mr. Erik Granberg talks about how to use our newest accessory, the Granberg Alaskan Winch®! And in keeping with our tradition of innovation we have introduced a 'friction screw' to prevent winch from unspooling when not in use.
The Alaskan Winch® System is a hand winch for the Alaskan Mill. The increased mechanical advantage of this tool makes milling easier and the cut smoother. It also has a unique lever arm anchor system that allows you to cut right to the end of the log. This light weight design attaches easily to the cross rails and is incredibly strong and durable. The Alaskan Winch® System includes the Winch, 38ft of rope and the lever arm anchor system. Enables user to cut up to a 18 foot log!

I made one out of a boat winch. Works well bit I learned a few things. It's heavy. Not to big of a deal, but I noticed it. You have to hook it to something. I hooked mine to the tractor or a tree. I got the wrong rope. It was springy. You need a solid rope to pull with for sure. Just buy this one and forget about my adventures. Good show man.

On my my 48” (actual cut width) setup I found the placement of the string ball on the mill critical. I had it nearly all the way out and it was a struggle till I moved it in to about 36”.🤷🏻‍♂️ I use a rare earth magnetic to add drag on the pulley bc I have a version before the screw. His recommendation at the very end is spot on with countering the weight of the saw head. I’m using a huge Husq 3120xp so lifting isn’t practical so I added a weight to the opposite end to do the trick.

Very interesting! We actually tested a prototype with a magnet design but ended up going with this screw idea. Nice idea with the counterweight, what are you using?

Granberg International - When i figured out what was happening I grabbed a 12lb piece off cut between my outside depth post and a second push handle I put near the end. My longterm though is to slide 5-10lb doughnut weight over that outside handle and figure out how not to have it rattle. The other kicker is with that much weight it wants to bow the bar between then depth gauges and the trigger is so far out that, to be comfortable, I have to clamp it until I work up a remote trigger with a bike brake. At 100% throttle for 11ft cut I run out gas 6” from the end🤣. It was crazy though moving the string ball attachment in just 6-8” made a night and day difference in effort. I went from “I need a gear reduction” to “I love this thing”.

I'm sorry, that cut did not look or sound smooth when you ran your hand over it. , you need a sharper chain ! I own the exact same mill and have made smoother cuts without a ripping chain. Ofcourse I do not know what wood hardness you are dealing with, and I have an oregon grinding maching keeping my chains real sharp

Glad to hear you're getting great cuts! Keep it up🙌 As for the cut made in the video, that is pretty dang smooth considering how unsmooth it could be from using cross-cut chain. As for sound, I am not sure what you're referring to, the sawyer flew through that log, which means that the chain was not only sharp but had a powerful saw.
