Minor point: We still use the word "gotten" in American English (U.S. and maybe even Canada) but you said that in Britain they had dropped that usage and default now to the shorter form, "got". We know that "gotten" had been in use all the way back in earlier times because the word "gotten" is all over the King James Bible. Be that as it may... You used the word "forgotten" in the video and I found that interesting as it is a form of the word. Language is so complicated sometimes.

Hey there, Thank you for this masterclass, however I still make the same mistake that you mentioned in the video I keep using past perfect where a past simple fits, as in : When I opened the door I had seen a black cat . I still don´t see the difference very well in that case. Greetings and thank you for your great work. Yours videos are really helpful :)

5:34 you say:" he said that he had changed his mind" but i reckon that it is meant to be in a narrative context right? Because i can think of some situations in which i can say "he said that he changed his mind" and "he said he has changed his mind" in a context like a bar ordination or sth of the kind. Thanks for the response

And now that i've looked up for infirect speech i finally have come to an answer: in indirect speech there are cases of no BACKSHIFT. look in Cambridge dictionary online, reported speech:indirect speech and read it, it is always explained with the rules for the backshift of the verb tenses but if u scroll down you find "no backshift" section
