Currently listening to a Radio War Nerd episode about the Imjin Wars, and I was struggling to picture the pyeonjeon and tongah from verbal descriptions alone, so this was a big help. Apparently the shorter arrows retain so much more rigidity during flight that they can travel up to 450 metres, depending on the bow being used. Your early accident while learning how to use it also explained why pyeonjoen were normally reserved for the most experienced archers! 😂 Thanks for taking a risk to teach us all something new (or, more accurately, something very old)

Hello from Taiwan, I also love the Tong Ah archery technique. Actually, I was inspired by a Korean soap opera-The Empress Ki, which makes me willing to try this technique one day. Now, I made a Tong Ah device by a broken broom made of bamboo.

Thank you, I built a Tong Ah for use by splitting bamboo for broken arrows... and did a lot of sanding to make sure arrow flight is straight...will test it out soon on a twenty pound bow and appreciate your video example of showing how you hit the fiberglass bow dead center... will remember that as I test this out slowly as safely as possible. Wish you the best and thank you for the excellent example. Building the Tong Ah myself gives me more confidence in it's strength and ability to keep an arrow from flying through my bow riser arm wrist... LOL! Will test it out soon after I'm done with the painting aspect of my Tong Ah... camouflage painting for it and already layered it with a glue to give it more strength... using bamboo made it very light and easy to keep straight. @@bayuyudhasaputra3169 Two fold I think: If the overdraw guide is pulled away before the short arrow passes the bow, the arrow could a) strike the bow, breaking it(As happened to him -he explained in the video), which often injures the archer, or b) the arrow could hit the archer's bowhand. Also, it just occured to me, if the arrow strikes the bow point-on, the arrow could explode & if it was a fibreglass or carbon fiber shaft, sharp shards could impale the archer's bow hand & forearm. I had that happen once, using wooden arrows on a quite light bow but got away with just a nasty bruise.

Be careful as it could lead to semi dry fire as the arrow gpp could be halved.

I love to target shoot out to 200 yards with normal arrows and by war arrows by broadhead on out to 170yards for fun. But I wouldn't ever torture my bow with ultra-lightweight arrows+ with this technique my first thought was ''I gonna hit my thumb straight into the bone'' :D So I leave this for the over-daw type of guys. Fun to watch but my goal is being capable to hit a man's chest size target from 10 to 200 yards. Flight archery and extreme overdraw is just fun to watch for me :) However, thank you! This is far the best video about Tong Ah!

You got a very interesting channel friend. I have shot recurve for years but now I have bought my first Korean style bow. And it is a very beautiful feeling to draw back 32"-35" and so let the arrows go.. Wow, wonder if I will go back to the recurve or if I will use more the Asian style bows, cuz now when I've got my khatra reasonably well, these bows are fun!!! - I will deff. make myself such a tong-ah to the baby-arrows and try it out.. - Thank you for making these videoes they do help a beginner at these styles of bows a lot.

A big question. Bowers warn us against shooting light weight arrows because it will result in dry fire.. But these broken half arrows according the Korean style must be super light.. So doesn't this destroy the bow?

i am aware of the fact. this is only 20 lbs bow and arrow is actually made from heavier arrows i used to shot. so this case, it is ok. but, yes, if you are using heavier bow and shoot light baby arrow, i fear the consequences.

actual word used is Tong Ah (통아- guide), Pyun Jeon (편전, 애기살- baby arrow). i don't think there is a specific english word to describe this device. i think, in turkish archery, it is called Majra. let me know if you find out. :)

I have always wondered whether the friction of the sting sliding along the edge of the Tong-Ah wears the string down faster. How has yours held up? Also, do you think this type of device is safer than a Siper?

that was initially what i thought. after using this a while, there is very little friction happening when you shoot, actually. so string is working just fine. :) i have not used Siper so i cannot compare. Siper seems interesting, though.

short arrows were used in battle or hunting. size of bow is not important. if you get a turkish bow, it's the smallest bow and can still fight on battle with enough power and speed. :)

Correct, short arrow use in war so the enemy cann't use it again...if the archer use normal arrow and miss it, the enemy can take it and use the arrow and also short arrow shoot using tong-ah or majra technique will fly faster and stronger than normal arrow

The short arrow and tong-ah are usefup in fights..they have speciality towards the user. In fight...in basic way using arrow,enemy can take it back and shoot you if you doesn't hit the enemy...but with shorter arrows...you can shoot the arrows swiftly and not wobble...and hit enemy more faster and get a clean shot....

When I use the majra, it gives damage to my center serving because the friction between majra and string is too tight. What am I doing wrong? 🤔

Tong ah is designed to shoot shorter arrows (baby arrows) whereas your enemy in the battle cannot shoot it back to you if they don't have the same tools. sorry about a short explanation. there are more videos that shows this kind of overdraw devices.

@iyoo1 Many Korean videos suggest that the open face of 통아 must NOT be wider than the diameter of the arrowhead. This ensures your safety since the arrowhead which could be considered as bullet head never leaves the 통아 which could be considered as the barrel in this case. Watch this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3rVmXmAlN6Fj7M As you see in your video at 3:55, your arrow does not stay inside the 통아 as it travels, and that's really dangerous. Imagine a bullet escaping from the parallel line of a gun barrel. Your 통아 is too widely open. Your arrow accidentally escaped from your 통아 can easily penetrate your left hand, or at least take away your thumb on your left hand. Use a more closed 통아 for your safety. A gun barrel would look like an "O" shape, and a good 통아 should be like a "C" shape. Your 통아 is just like "(" shape.

Many medieval Korean records write that left arm injury was common among archers practicing this kind of 애깃살(편전) barrel/short-arrow shooting. Reasons were various including the problem regarding arrows escaping from a incorrectly built open-face 통아(Tong-A barrel) I mentioned in my previous comment. Other reasons for those injuries were incorrect arm angle of bow holding, Tong-A barrel breaking(usually due to weak material or the barrel being bent over seasons of humidity/temperature change), or faulty arrows(bent arrow body, asymmetrical arrowhead, or too-narrow arrowhead that could escape even from a well-closed "C"-shape Tong-A barrel) and more. A most common way of preventing such left-arm injury during practicing was using regular sized arrows that are long enough to not require a Tong-A barrel. If you use a regular sized arrows inside Tong-A barrel while getting used to the Tong-A shooting skills, the worst case from an escaping-arrow-accident is your Tong-A barrel getting a little scratch, and your left arm will be perfectly safe, because the front tip of the long arrowhead will always be ahead of your left arm even at full bow draw, disabling any probability of possible left-arm penetration accident. All of those left arm accidents happen because the arrowhead of short arrow inside the barrel is behind your left hand, and that can penetrate your hand as it escapes from the barrel. This is similar to how gun shooters always stay behind the muzzle and shooting line. I recommend you to practice with a full-length arrows first, and stay using the full-length arrows until you ensure BOTH your Tong-A shooting skill and the durability and reliability of your home-made Tong-A after months of practice&field test. The medieval Korean records also write that the fatal left-arm injuries were not only painful but also disabled the archer's bow shooting ability permanently, forcing the wounded archers to be repositioned from archery units to infantry spearmen units.
