I recently used wheelchair assistance at two major airports for the first time. It was a smooth, amazing experience. Without that help, I would not have made it to the departure gates or to the airport exits where I could be picked up in a car. The help provided through the TSA line was great. I tipped each person who assisted me $20. I traveled with a carry-on and a personal item bag. Although I was capable of lifting my carry-on into the overhead bin, on one of the flights the United Airlines flight attendant hurried to my side and placed my carry-on into the overhead bin. I told her I realized she didn't have to do that but told her how grateful I was for her help. I'm more likely to travel by air in the future because my experience with wheelchair assistance was A+.

At DFW Dallas tx. I was told by the airport staff that at the ticket counter of your airline you can request a NON PASSENGER ESCORT PASS to assist someone [an elderly ] to the Gate. That way you know they got on the plane. Also as you said when purchasing a ticket you can request wheelchair assistance if there is a layover and at the next airport they will assist them to the next gate.

The very first thing you mentioned about not having to be confined to a wheelchair and just having it to speed up the process was exactly what I needed to hear. I’ll be flying back from the Philippines in October and I have some disability, but not to the point where it affects my ability and endurance to walk. I’ll be traveling alone for the first time and instead of explaining my disability in detail, my mom just requested me to travel in a wheelchair. On one hand, I’m grateful that someone from the airport will just be there to guide me, but then I still do feel a bit of guilt.

very good information! I just want to say that I am unemployed, my mom is on social security. It gets really expensive when you add up paying plus tipping Uber, sky caps, wheelchair assistance(especially if you have multiple connections!). And I was really sad that at the end of our travels the wheelchair assistance helper told me that I did not give him enough! Also don't forget to add in the cost of the ticket, and if you have to pay for luggage to and fro.

It's quite interesting to see how this works in different parts of the world. I have a lot of experience with assistance in Europe, and it's quite different here! Some of the things are the same, but there are also some big differences. For tourists flying into Europe, this might be good to know as well. For example most airports have to have their own assistance service and you have ato go to a service desk or machine. Tips are also not common at all either.

Hi and thank you for your help. I do have a question and my apologies if this is a silly question. But, when I get off of a flight and have requested assistance, when you’re waiting for a person with a wheelchair do I just walk up to one of them and say I need one or do they know a head who it’s for?
@swa976 ай бұрын
@SouthernGospelLady At my company, we have tablets that tell us how many wheelchair passengers there are on a particular flight. The passengers name shows up and it helps to make sure that we have enough chairs for everyone. It's not necessary but it helps keep passengers from having to wait for a chair if no one knew they were coming. They may ask for your boarding pass but that's just because our company gets paid per chair. There is no cost to you, and you can always ask for assistance even if it is not in your reservation. Having that note on your reservation just make everyone's life easier. Hope this helps.
@swa976 ай бұрын
@@SouthernGospelLadyIf they're in the jet bridge waiting for you, they'll gladly assist. We have passengers that have the note but walk off the plane simply because they needed the extra time to board and get situated. We call that "jet bridge jesus" on the receiving end of the flight.

Any suggestions? Thank you for the informative video!!

First, you want need a Dr.'s note, as the airport doesn't require it. Your word is enough. As for the carry on, they are VERY good at handling bags (there is space beneath the wheelchair, there are "hooks" from which they can hang things, and they can rest them in your lap). Additionally, they will get you through security more easily. Under the conditions you described, I would absolutely use the wheelchair service.

Thank you so much for this! Taking my elderly mom on a trip for the first time needing wheelchari service so this is so helpful. I have a follow up question if you don't mind - what if there's a long gap between when we arrive at the airport and the boarding time, will the wheelchair helpers stay around that whole time? I'm hoping to be able to take my mom to a lounge before boarding - do you think they'll be able to bring her to the lounge and then come back later to help bring her to the gate?
@AverageMe2 жыл бұрын
They will get you to the gate, where she will stay in her wheelchair. If you go to the lounge, I would ask the WC attendant how to contact them when it's time to go to the gate. Otherwise, they will have attendants to help move them down the jetway if needed when it's time to board. I recently traveled again with my father-in-law and we needed to get them several times as we had a long layover with bathroom visits, etc. and only had the airports wheelchairs. So I have to have a lot of cash on hand to tip each time.

I've been discriminated against for using a wheel chair on allegiant because I look fine. I don't look disabled. I'm in my 60s. I can walk, walk fairly fast, and have good balance, but long distance walking and standing in line for too long will cause me a great deal of pain. I've even seen you tube videos of people claiming that people fake a disability to get early boarding. I always pay for early boarding and seat selection. They don't look at your ticket before treating you poorly. I have to say that South West, so far, has treated me well when I asked for a wheel chair. I have started taking my walker because I need it at my destination, when I know I will have to walk some distance. Sometimes when I get my walker back from the airport a screw and bolt is missing, so I cannot use my walker until, I go buy a new screw to fix it. That gets frustrating too. Other then the disability issue, I love flying allegaiant. I like the small airports. They just need to talk to some of their employees about treating people who need wheel chairs or come with a walker, respect, even if they don't look disabled.

I'm now in my 70s. I have bone on bone in my foot. The doctor told me to take Glucosamine capsules and drink bone broth everyday and that will help with the pain. That has helped some. I can walk fine and I have good balance. I just deal with pain when standing in one spot for too long or walking much distance.. The weather seems to have some effect too.. Cold rainy days are worse.. Some days are not real bad, other days are real bad.. I never know. Ive always paid for early boarding and seat selection, so I don't want anything for free. Ik work at the airport as assistance. And we can nog accept tips :( or else we het fires

Which airport? I have always tipped assistance and have NEVER been told otherwise. Tips have always been accepted. In 10 years of traveling for business, every business traveler I know has always tipped. I'd love to hear more about your airport; that is quite unusual, and is certainly not the standard across the industry.

@@AverageMe amsterdam.. most of the people will take it. But if the see you take it. You will be fired on spot. If you say no to a tip and they really want you to take it. You have to take it and call your supervisor and then you have to give it to them. And they will give it to a charity end of the year. Some colleagues will snitch on you if they see you take a tip and nog call the supervisor. Its at your own risk

I am travelling via Amsterdam next week. So, should I try to tip or not? I don't want any trouble for anyone. Also, is it considered rude if I tip in Amsterdam?

the part about no carry on is not true,, most people the are disabled have meds that have to be on the plane,,also the wheelchair battery if lithium also has to be in the cabin and the pilot notified, i fly with my chair and they not only put my carry on away but they also carry it onto the plane when i turn my chair over to them at the plane door, i have even gone international by myself, they assist you through customs as well,,, do not be afraid to fly

Yes you can bring carry on, just like any other passenger

my point is that they will help you stow it or stow it for you, the way you said it might give people the impression that the crew would give NO assistance@@AverageMe
