What an excellent How To. No crapping on (if you'll excuse the language). No chest beating, or boastfulness. I love that he doesn't suppose previous knowledge, and explains things in detail so that even if it's your first time using an angle grinder, you can follow along. I want to plane down some warped floorboards, and wasn't sure if it was the right tool, but it's my sander is in storage, so... I'd forgotten how much mess they make. That fact alone was worth watching the video!

Hi Annie thank you for your feedback, Yes it’s gonna make a lot of dust maybe not the tool of choice for a floor if you already live there a belt sander with a dust bag works well or a commercial machine that is made for floors can be rented Good luck with your project

My husband is a veteran fabricator, and I’m a brand new wood worker. He gave me his angle grinder to use in wood projects when he went to mechanics (automotive) after closing the fab shop (used to make lift kits for side by sides). He HATES wood work, but I still asked him for tool advice frequently. I asked about using the grinder for sanding and leveling wood. He said “no, it won’t do anything but burn it and sandpaper just falls apart”. Well, he was sort of right, but I took an old disc and super glued sandpaper to it. Well, the sand paper fell apart fairly quickly, but it was AMAZING and saved TONS of sanding time! I HATE sanding, but it’s a crucial part of a finished product. I’m just highly impatient, because I typically need what I’m building yesterday lol. He always told me he knew of zero sanding products similar to what I made. I also couldn’t find any at Lowe’s, so figured he was right. I happened to be shopping for something else at harbor freight and they had a sanding disc like what I made! I was so happy I bought 5 😂

@@RusticDavid I just tried it today. You were right, it's doable. but one thing that I would like to differ with you is that you said that you keep one thumb on the head of the grinder and press it while the other hand controls the grinder position. But I found it tougher that way. I used both of my hands to control the position and just let the weight put the pressure on the board. Do you think I missed any point about how you do it? Or could you suggest any improvements?

Wow! Thanks for saving us loads of work! My husband and I - truly terrible carpenters - are replacing the top planks on our 55' deck. The basic under-structure is sound. However, we found one support that had swelled just a bit - that bit prevented the top plank from lying flat. What to do? A plane - nope - too much work for our arthritic hands.Sander? Would take too much time and effort. Fortunately it was time to quit work for the day... Then, this morning, Harbor freight had a circular ad in the paper and I noticed an angle grinder for $9.99. A grinder - h'mm. That just might to something to help us. I looked online to see what a grinder even does (remember we are inept novices who are unafraid of trying to fix anything...we can always hire an expert if we really mess up). The first link I found was yours. THANK YOU!. That ten dollar grinder did the trick and YOU saved us time and hand pain in the process. Now I will check your feed for all of our problems.

Hello David. I have been using the Festool Rotex for 6 years and I was unhappy with it's sanding speed but I assumed it was the best I could do without buying a wide belt sander. After tax yte Rotex it's almost $700 american. I recently started doing some research and turns out that the rotary mode on the Rotex only goes to 600 RPM. Super super low compared to an angle grinder. Even the festool reps that I've talked to say the 4 1/2" Festool RAS sander is much faster than the Rotex. Well the RAS is just a variable speed angle grinder with a dust shroud attachment. I'm not sure why it's not common knowledge to use an angle grinder with a dust shroud and a sanding pad for aggressive sanding. It's almost unheard of. Now that the concrete industry has mandated dust shrouds for grinding there are good options for dust collection on grinders. More people need to know about this

Hi Tom I think the heat of sanding will be your biggest problem melting the velcro pad do small areas and cool the disc regularly with a compressor if you have one but if you can beg borrow or otherwise acquire a handheld belt sander that will save you hours of waiting and probably several velcro discs . Good luck take it slowly and wear a dust mask.

@RusticDavid
@RusticDavid 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Hobomnky , flap discs work best on wood at slow speed on sappy wood like pine they clog up fast and burn the wood you can keep them clean by sanding a piece of dry rtv silicon like what you seal around bath. Happy Woodworking David

@hobomnky 4 жыл бұрын
@@RusticDavid I got a variac ready so I could slow down my grinder to avoid burning but i ended up not needing it. To my surprise, against all the conventional knowledge I found on KZbin, I was able to use a ceramic oxide 40 grit disc from 3M with a small 1200RPM dewalt grinder without any burning on a knotty log. I believe it was a spruce log. I now suspect that maybe using a high quality sanding disc might prevent the burning issue. Perhaps it is the cermaic oxide, or maybe 3M's discs just don't clog very easily for whatever reason.

Pretty painful seeing it called "just an angle grinder" to be honest lol. Before getting an angle grinder, I tried both a random orbital from Einhell, and also a Stanley Fatmax 1010W Belt Sander. Random orbital removes way too little, and the motor almost gives out the moment you try to add more pressure because it isn't doing anything otherwise... and the sandpaper ends up ruined before it's even managed to effectively do it's job... Then there's the belt sander which is so aggressive, it ruins the shape of the wood way too easily if not used correctly. Angle grinders are by far, in my experience, the best and fastest way to reliably sand down large boards while keeping the wood's shape intact. Biggest disadvantage of angle grinders though, is yeah, they do have a mind of their own and you have to be aware enough to raise it if it starts misbehaving in the hand, lest you have it fly around and hit you on a recoil action. Feels kinda like all angle grinders should have speed controls embedded, but alas, even high brand names like Makita don't make this standard. I do have to say though, it behaves much better if you use it in single-handed mode. Having the extra grip installed does nothing but persuade you to use more pressure than is needed. Sanding with an angle grinder, you only need to make light passes over the wood to get effective results. Start with a low grit paper like 40, you'll be going up to 80, then 120 very quickly, and no pressure whatsoever is needed to remove scratches. Let the machine do the work itself. You're only there to guide it. Using too much pressure compounds with the motor's need to maintain it's velocity... which is where the kickback comes from, causing you to lose control that was not meant to be yours to begin with. Don't steal control that's not yours 😉 Respect your tools, and let them do their jobs.

Hi Joana, no matter whether you are sanding by hand or with a machine start with rough paper and work up through the grits , in the video I am using 80 grit this is rough then I should go to a higher grit 120 for example then to 220 each one removes the scratches of the one before please check out my other videos on sanding kzbin.info/aero/PL2ARkvkCgY7K3QO2CPcKWC_ayZKes4GhO. Interesting. I had a quick go at sanding with my angle grinder and 80 grit. It was working but my eye guard quickly misted over since I wore a paper mask that directs my breath to the eye protector, so I had to call it quits. It's incredibly annoying to need glasses to focus, and eye/lung/hearing protection to use an angle grinder.

Nice videos but where is your mask? Angle grinders have no dust collection system and as they were intended to be used on metal with the wood side an afterthought they are not easy to sand with unless you have lots of practice. Most beginners would end up with a nice bowl instead of a flat piece of wood. They are great for hacking out loads of material but not exactly a delicate tool!

Hi there ,Thank you for your feedback much appreciated, i mention in the video that im not wearing a mask so i can talk, maybe i should stress the point,,i believe that i give clear instruction on how to use the angle grinder for flattening a board which i also say is not so easily done as said , i believe that if a beginner follows my instructions with a little practice on some scrap they can get a good result , i have taught this to my students at my workshop and i would say the majority can get a good result in hind sight i should recommend practicing on scrap first best wishes David
