Who knew hooking up a pair of headphones could be so complicated. I guess there's no way to switch it between PC, PS5, and Xbox on a whim throughout the day without going through all this every time. No way.

It's complicated because not many people use virtual surround sound for headphones. Most people are still stuck on stereo like a bunch of dweeb. Either not enough people appreciate or even know how much of a difference it makes over standard headsets. Not everyone is an audiophile. In fact this must be the case why Sony could be so careless and get rid of the optical port to begin with. Not enough of us value the sound ASTRO surround can deliver. As a consequence it takes more technology workarounds to keep going.

3 months late - but if you still need an answer or to whomever reading this in 2024, stick with dolby audio. atoms is for home theater and is not compatible with headphones n

I don’t know about anyone else but my a50’s work great without this tool and I own a ps5 lol 😂 I just hooked it up like I did on my PS4 and boom nothing wrong. Clear audio and voice chat on my end

You can connect it via USB, but you’re losing out on Dolby Digital and other functionality like EQ Presets, Game: Voice balancer etc. It doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as it does with the adapter or suitable optical output.

You can connect the optical to your TV optical output. The adaptor box only goes up to 60fps ok for most TVs but if you have 120fps this thing is no good. Just check if your TV has optical output, if it does you don't need the box.

The crappy part is the PS5 shuts off the USB ports even if you you have it selected to stay on. So unless the PS5 is on they aren't charging.

Can you walk through the settings on the PS5 if you hook the optical cable directly to the TV. I changed my output on my TV to use the optical output and the input and output device on the PS5 to Astro, but when I change the headphone setting to chat, I lose all sound. Help :)

Change the setting on the ps5 to keep the front port alive when in rest mode, ensure the dock is plugged into the front

I use turtle beach 700 gen 2's and all you need is the USB transmitter, this just seems way to complicated to setup and is steering me away from trying these

I have the Astro Audio Extractor and honestly, it's pointless. Just bought a new monitor Viewsonic VX2882 4k 150hz 28" and because of this adapter, I'm unable to experience 4k 120hz on my PS5. Stuck at 1080P @ 120hz. Astro's excuse is "There isn't enough games that actually support 4k 120hz" I mean fair enough, but surely you would bring another option to the market for future proofing. Pretty sure no one wants to play in competitive games with 4k @ 60hz, especially in Call of Duty and Warzone, many others. It's beyond frustrating considering over here in NZ/Australia you're looking at $500-600 for Astro's which are a phenomenal headset only to get screwed and go backwards when you hit Next Gen.

There are HDMI 2.1 adapters on Amazon, but they are expensive. More than double what the Astro adapter costs. And there's a risk that they won't work as we are expecting them to work. So because of that, I'm stuck with A20s gen2.

It capes it if you’re running more that 1080p, 1080p 120hz will work but if you run at 4k it’ll drop to 60

My issue is that my Astro A50s work but every time I use my mic the using the optical port on my TV (without the astro box thing), the whole lobby hears everything from my headset too, so any gunfire while talking and it absolutely deafens the party.

@@abdullahalo94 My guess is that you have to have Dolby on your headset turned on. Apparently, the PS5 only outputs a bitstreamed Dolby Digital signal, and the heaphone(in this case the base station) needs to be able to decode it. With Dolby enabled on the A50 , it will decode the signal from the PS5 properly. But I still don't know why I still can hear the sounds normally even with the PS5 set to output Dolby and the Dolby turned off on the headset.(probably because the PS5 setting is only "prioritizing" the output setting you have set, and if the receiver doesn't match the output signals, the console will automatically send stereo linear pcm signals to the headphones)

@@abdullahalo94 I tried a surround speaker setup test created in a game called "Dream", and I can now confirm that you have to have Dolby enabled on the headset. Otherwise, the sound will be down sampled to stereo(sounds only appear to be coming only from the right, left or center).

I just unplug the headset from the ps5 (all you need is the USB cable that plugs into playstation) switch it to pc mode and plug it into my computer and launch the astro command center. This will tell you if there is any new firmware updates

I don’t work with Astro anymore, so I’m not sure. But I’m pretty sure the A50X doesn’t need an adapter. It’s built for current tech, this headset wasn’t, so this was an option to make it compatible with the newer tech.

My Astro A50s went to sht with the PS5. The adapter sucks. I went through so many settings just to make them be on par with PS4 then after months, they can’t hold a charge and lose connection after many hard resets and disconnecting the base. Sony did us dirty not having an optical port trying to force everyone to use their new 3D Audio.
