How to connect your headset to the PS5 with the Astro HDMI adapter

Connecting your headset to the PS5 can be easy. It doesn't matter if it's an Astro A50 wireless headset or your Astro gaming A40 + mixamp. It can all be done with the Astro gaming HDMI adapter. The big issue with the PS5 is the missing optical port. With and HDMI adapter/extractor you take the audio signal out the HDMI signal and send it over to the optical port in the adapter and the simply forward the image to the screen.
Important note: the HDMI adapter works for any headset that uses an optical connection. Not only an Astro headset. So you can use this adapter for all brands.
In our test we were able to get 120Hz @ 1080p and 60Hz @4K on our Gigabyte 144Hz 1440p monitor. So no performance loss on 1080p

Hey! Great video. I don't have a ps5 yet but I just have one question for when I finally get one. I use my PS to create content so that means I need a Capture card. I use a Elgato 4k capture card that is placed in my PC. This means that I am already using my HDMI to go from my PS to my pc first and than the Monitor. If I want to use my ASTRO A50, is it still possible to Also add The ASTRO HDMI adapter into the setup? Because from my understanding, I first have to go from the PS to the capture card, from the capture card to the ASTRO HDMI adapter, to the Monitor? Or won't that work because my PC might interfere with the direct connection of the audio. I'm asking cause I can't test it just yet and I am a little bit worried I won't be able to use my Astro.

you can still put it in between and I would put it between the pc and elgato. As for sound, you can use the elgato cable and plug it into the aux of the A50

Just an FYI my tv (LG OLED CX) has an optical output and you can set it to output the audio coming from the HDMI cable. So it's worth looking if your tv supports that too.

So assuming that for example you have: Gigabyte M28U that supports 4k with 120hz that comes with HDMI 2.1 and you hook up this adapter in between your PS5 and your M28U to extract the audio that you need for the headset, does this HDMI adapter/extractor come with HDMI 2.1? If it comes with 2.0 then it may lock me with 4k at 60 hz even though a would have 4k and 120hz monitor and a game that supports 120hz. Am I correct on this?

you need USB for power anyway, if you put it in the console you'll be able to use USB for voice (creating channel 1) and then optical for game audio (which creates channel 2). Wether you get the optical sound from and adapter or from your TV that doesn't matter

the headset base station is getting it's power from a USB source, so make sure the source you are using is giving enough power; Normally you plug your base station in the PS5, else you don't have chat sound on the PS5. If that doesn't work, plug your controller in the same port and see if that works, else you might have a faulty usb port on your ps5

Ik los dit zelf op door maar een losse USB-kabel te gebruiken en zo mijn headset op te laden maar dit is toch wel ongebruikelijk en vooral onhandig. In instellingen heb ik WEL aanstaan dat tijdens rustmodus power wordt gesupplied naar de USB-poorten, dus daar kan het niet aan liggen... not needed and it depends on the headset, an Astro A40 mixamp (wired) has a stream port that sends out all audio that comes in & out to a single output, great for streamers, sadly only on the wired mixamp. So if you would use the audio extractor, you could connect the optical to your PC and capture the incoming voice & game audio, but it will not capture your voice. So you'll have to use a second mic

USB works fine, but then you cant change you voice/game balance. And I think the USB doesn't give you surround. And if your monitor has an optical out you also don't need the adapter, it's the exact same solution but then build into your tv

no, it should work right away as the PS5 doesnt know what is connected (monitor or monitor + adapter). Just make sure the adapter is getting enough power, worst case put it in a 5V charges

nee de adapter gaat niet helpen, die heeft enkel invloed op het geluid via je optical (je game sound dus). Het slechter klinken van de USB connectie ligt aan de driver die Sony in de PS5 heeft gestoken, die is dan blijkbaar niet bijster goed

you could work with an optical splitter, but then the USB connection would still be an issue ... so i'd say no unless you start doing crazy stuff in which case it'll probably be cheaper just to buy a second mixamp in case of the A50 you could just get a second base and then click it in the base for a sec and it'll sync

@@GamegearTV solution found and it's quite simple! I've used a USB switch which connects the two consoles to the base station, I just switch between either console from the device depending on which one I want to use! The optical cable stays connected from the base station to the TV.

in my test the sound was better over optical. Also you'll have 2 channels (USB and optical) allow you to change voice-game balance. If oyu only use USB then you can't change the balance

@@GamegearTV they worked fine on my PS4 because I directly plugged in my Optical to it. I did all this and set it to 5.1 but it still doesn’t produce the same sound. As a matter of fact it doesn’t come from my headphones it comes from the TV. It only works if I put it through USB.

I don’t have the Astro adapter. I bought a similar one from insignia that does the same thing but I still cannot mix my audio. Like before this whole bullshit happened, I could press the game side of my headset and I’d only be able to hear the game. Or I’d press the chat button and I’d hear the chat. Or I could set it right in the middle so I could hear both. But now it only lets me hear both or nothing. I thought this adapter was supposed to fix that?

you have to set the PS5 chat to Astro and main game audio to HDMI else it will indeed not help and the PS5 will send ALL audio over USB and not the optical

yes and no, you'll sacrifice something. Console you'll need USB and then you can still connect the optical to the PC. But then voice will only work on the PS5. Other way around is also possible. But you always sacrifice something on one of the 2

The astro mixamp has 2 audio channels: USB and optical. If you only use USB then you are "stuck" with 1 channel and you can't change eg the voice volume vs game volume because all is going over 1 channel. Additionally it seems like the USB driver of the PS5 is ... pretty basic and doesn't give the fullest audio. In my experience I liked the audio better over optical. So what this thing does is take the audio out of the HDMI signal and sends it over to an optical port so you can enjoy that second channel (optical) of your mixamp again. However some TV's have an optical out, in this case you don't need the adapter. Also if you are happy with the USB audio and you dont need to switch volume levels, then you don't need this and you can just use optical

99% certain they'll launch a dedicated PS5 solution this year as it would be wierd if they didn't since this model was launched at the end 2019, so timing wise it would make sense. If you don't mind waiting until the end of the year, you could therefore wait/take a gamble for a new model

This does not work for me. No video output to the TV. I have gen3 Astros A50s. What spec HDMI cables are you using? I have the Astro supplied cable between the adapter and PS5. I assume this cable is HDMI 2.0. The cable from the adapter to my TV is HDMI 2.1. Is this my issue?

I tried a 2.0 cable, do you mind trying that? it would be very helpfull to know if a 2.1 cable causes issues. However they should be backwards compatible, but there is always theory and then the real world

the problem is this pulls out the audio and only forwards the video. But if you have the A40 with mixamp you can use a 3.5mm from the stream port to your audio in from your tv (or a similar setup), it's a bit messy but there is almost always a way

I record gameplay and followed these steps but I just added my elgato in. Everything is set up fine, but when I plug the mix-amp usb into my pc I cant hear game chat audio and neither can they. I can record my commentary audio but it won't get my party chat audio on the elgato. Then When I plug the mix-amp usb into my ps5 the elgato doesn't pick up my commentary, but my mic and chat audio come out fine. What do I need to do to record game and chat audio on my elgato while still being able to hear chat audio online? If it i'm not making any sense just ask me to clarify cuz this is mad confusing.

do you have the A50 or A40 if you have the a40 just use the stream port on the mixamp and connect that to the elgato The a5à sadly doesnt have that so you'll need a chat cable
